Definitions - What is Data Visualization? The visual / schematic representation of data We seem to call Data Indicators Two Types Discussed Here: Using pictures to make a data-based point Using graphics to help understand data for decision making, action, review In the old days: Business Intelligence? Predictive analysis, dashboards, infographics - nice portfolio of Infographics 9

Audience: What is Visualization Useful For In Your Nonprofit 20
Motivation 1 from data2insight We are good at what we do, but we cannot communicate it to our clients. We understand metrics, but cannot communicate or demonstrate understanding to others. We are stuck in the middle and need to push the data up or down. 21
Motivation 2 from data2insight We have so much data, it is overwhelming. We cannot make sense of the data. We do not have IT resources and/or literacy to process or report on the data. We are drowning in data, starved for wisdom. Our systems do not talk to each other. 22
Motivation 3 from data2insight Funder and/or other stakeholder mandates (or strongly urges) use of a dashboard. Stakeholders want a snapshot of what is going on. 23
Data Integration and Visualization Impact Easy absorption of information for public Interactivity and animation capture and engage nothing like a table of numbers! Non-technical what if analysis Merging data sets / overlays to see: Patterns: obesity rates in food deserts Areas of need / opportunity: Clinic within 10 miles Results over time: Decreased recidivism 24
25
Data Integration and Visualization Impact Service delivery maps / Overlay with community indicators Reporting and notification Financial analysis / integration Census / demographic data Schools Program Outcomes / Evaluation 26
Data Visualization Requires Data Burgeoning initiatives to integrate and free public data sets Requires Data Access Method(s) Requires Visualization Tools Translate data into pictures 27

What to Use When Bullet Graphs Single quantitative measure compared to one or more related measures (i.e., a target) Optionally with qualitative scale subdivided into ranges (good, satisfactory, a bad). Bar Graphs Quantitative measure subdivided into categories (i.e., sales regions or units of time); if a time series (i.e., subdivided into units of time), emphasis is on the distinct value rather than the overall shape of the data. Stacked Bar Graphs Part-to-whole data must be displayed for each of multiple categorical subdivisions (i.e., sales regions or months.) Line Graphs Time series or frequency distribution Focus on the shape of the data. 57
What to Use When Combination Bar and Line Graphs When some data in the graph can be displayed best as bars and data can be displayed best as a line. Time-series data and also Pareto graphs (display ranked data as bars and the running total of that data as a line) Sparklines Display a time series with focus on the shape of the data and no need for quantitative precision. Scatter Plots Display correlations between paired sets of quantitative data Box Plots Display open-high-low-close stock data, or any combo of a distribution and specific measures, such as averages. Display measures of distribution across multiple categorical subdivisions. 58

To Do Something Decide if you will either: Load data into new data structure Access via APIs / access data in situ Pre-made Interfaces / All ODBC Requirements, requirements, requirements Mobile access / touch screens Social / Sharing Web-ready Enterprise deployment / integration with local data sets The Right Tool for the Job 68
Why this used to be Hard Before: Automatic generation of visual data doesn t look great and design is not automated Now: Full styling control Before: Access to data sources Now: Web Services Before: Space and Speed Constrained Now: Space and bandwidth are cheap Still Hard: Integration of Each New Data Source Constantly changing technology 69
Why this is still hard Reconciling taxonomies Zip codes =/ Voting districts Data is Hard Boolean Logic Quarters to Months Comparing data when there are gaps Comparing qualitative and quantitative data 70
