2 An Optical Vision Canon is proud to debut two advanced-design PL-mount lenses specifically developed to support top-end digital motion imaging. Their design followed a careful study of new high-resolution digital production standards. Internationally, the ITU BT.1769 Recommendation for a hierarchy of 2K / 4K / 8K digital production formats is a definitive blueprint for the evolution of digital motion imaging over the next decade and beyond. This standard is supported by the new SMPTE standard ST :2009. Separately, SMPTE will shortly publish a 2K and 4K digital production standard specifically tailored to the recommendations of DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) for industry commentary. The 2K and HD digital production formats are firmly established in the global marketplace at this time, while 4K is poised to enter and further augment the quality of digital imaging. This background guided Canon s developments of a new optical platform that anticipates this exciting evolution in digital acquisition. At NAB 2009 Canon showed a prototype of an 8K lens, operating on a prototype UHDTV camera, that was based on this new optical platform. Now, in 2011, Canon has mobilized this same platform to bring to market two important new lenses that conform to the emerging 4K production standards. These precision matched lenses inherently ensure the very highest performance in contemporary 2K and HD digital 35mm motion imaging performance, while definitively future proofing the transition to 4K production. As indicated in the table below multiple optical parameters can bear on an individual image quality attribute. In seeking the highest 4K image performance, the new lens design platform had to simultaneously optimize those parameters that enhance the imaging attributes, while also minimizing the various optical aberrations and distortions that might degrade the image. New optical materials, new optical coatings, and new design techniques were all mobilized to develop an important advance in overall optical performance. Highly advanced computer simulation, that could cope with the hundreds of thousands of design variables, allowed an unprecedented degree of optimization of all contributing imaging parameters. This sophisticated new optical platform ensured the closest performance matching between the two lenses, minimized alterations to that performance with changes in scene object distances, and physically produced more compact and lightweight products than contemporary PL mount lenses. 4 Creating a New level in Digital Motion Imaging The impressive image quality advances in large format single-sensor digital cameras place increasingly higher demands on the overall optical image quality delivered to the image sensor by the lens. In developing these two PL mount lenses, Canon sought a breakthrough optical design that anticipated further ongoing camera improvements in the decade ahead. Feature Film Origination These two lenses are sure to excite the most discerning cinematographer. In the wide lens, the T2.6 maximum aperture stays totally constant over the entire focal range, and combined with the virtual absence of focus breathing, offers new freedom in exploring novel picture creation. The preservation of high MTF at wide open aperture, the well-controlled light distribution across the 35mm image plane, and the greatly curtailed ghosting and veiling glare artifacts from strong light sources, ensures superb contrast under a wide range of scene lighting conditions, and will maximize the video creation capabilities of the current top-of-the-line digital single-sensor cameras. The telephoto lens will complement the wide in larger studios while also servicing many outdoor shots with exceptionally vivid imagery. Television Drama and Television Commercial Production The focal ranges offered by the combination of these two lenses will flexibly address most of the needs of contemporary high-end television production. The superb overall image quality will surpass the aspirations of the most demanding producer, director, and cinematographer. Respecting the desire of some cinematographers to avoid inadvertent disturbance of this adjustment, the mechanism is concealed beneath a cover plate. For those accustomed to traditional back focus alignment (especially in multicamera television production) the mechanism is readily accessed with a simple flat screwdriver.
