8 R&D and early innovation adoption related measures (2) Concentrated investment in world-leading R&D New fund: 22 billion SEK; 30 themes over 5 years From basic research to R&D close to exit New system centered around theme-leaders now being selected Organizations providing support for theme leaders to be selected through call for proposals p 146 million SEK per theme and year in All Japan efforts Various programs in environment/energy, medical, ITC fields researchers to be sent to leading foreign R&D-org. over 5 years: 2.4 billion SEK Funding of technology & business dev. in SMEs: 6.2 billion SEK

9 Some issues World-class R&D-effort costs 150 Million SEK per year? Do we have any All Sweden efforts? World-class R&D dependent on individuals When does the Swedish market have sufficient size for creating demand pull for innovation? Innovation systems for green technology? American VC-model currently in crisis? Japanese big-company based model not open enough? New batteries an area in which different innovation systems are competing. Will new hybrid models emerge?
