3 [BECOME AN EXPERT IN MUSCULAR SKELETAL DISORDERS] Clinical biomechanics (chiropractic) is the field of the health sciences linking biological, biomechanical and psychological knowledge to musculoskeletal diseases in patients suffering from pain and disability in joints, muscles and bones. As a chiropractor, you are expected to be able to prevent, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders using of the latest knowledge and technologies. Becoming a chiropractor involves being prepared for lifelong learning. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE Clinical biomechanics is a 5-year study programme that combines theoretical studies with practical manual training. The fi rst 3 years of the programme correspond closely to the medical programme, which is supplemented by a number of subjects such as theoretical and clinical biomechanics. Here you will learn practical methods for the examination and treatment of joints and muscles. The Bachelor programme is divided into twelve modules of 8 weeks duration. In addition, the programme is divided into three parallel tracts: the biomedical, the academic and the profession tracts. Each of the twelve modules comprises elements within two or three of the tracts (Figure 1). The biomedical tract comprises the basic health sciences on which clinical biomechanics is based and provides you with extensive knowledge about human biological life from beginning to end allowing you, as a student to understand health and illness in a social, cultural, and ethnic context for the individual, but also in a national and international health perspective. The overall workload corresponds to 2 years. The profession track includes a clinical internship, skills training and training in patient communication. The teaching provides you with fundamental clinical competences to diagnose patients with FIGURE 1. The academic track contains philosophy of science, scientifi c method and information retrieval. 4 critically assess scientific literature, and thus an understanding of how new knowledge is formed. The Graduate programme Following the Bachelor programme, you have to complete another 2 years of studies in order to become a Master in Health Science, Clinical Biomechanics. The Master s programme comprises the clinical part with both practical and theoretical teaching. It follows the same structure as the Bachelor programme with three parallel tracts (Figure 2). The clinical tract provides you with knowledge of medical and radiological diagnostics. The courses are based on group work with real-life cases. You will be trained in making diagnoses and treatment plans for patients with a wide range of disorders. The profession tract is a continuation of the Bachelor programme. The skills training is continued with special focus on the extremities. During the clinical internship you will diagnose real patients under supervision, and you will be responsible for the treatment plans. The academic tract is an independent scientific project. You will also learn to critically assess information about musculoskeletal disorders. STUDY ENVIRONMENT The University in Odense has a lively study environment and welcoming surroundings with a campus café, a student bookstore, quiet study halls, several university cafeterias, the university library and much more. FNKS [Association of Nordic Chiropractic Students] regularly organises academic and social events, and you can participate in the instructive and well attended palpation nights (palpation= touch/feel with your hands and fingers). In addition, the Odense campus offers a varied student life of both social and academic nature, including a film club, a student congregation, party political forums, an association for Nordic Youth, the Friday bar, a European Student Network, just to mention a few. JOB OPPORTUNITIES A commonly held belief is that a chiropractor just cracks the back. However, this idea is narrow and simplistic as chiropractors have a broad education and expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. As a chiropractor, you also have the opportunity to specialise within the hospital sector or dedicating yourself to a particular area by enrolling in a Master s degree programme. The prospects of becoming a researcher or teach at the clinical biomechanics programme are also excellent. REQUIREMENTS AND ADMISSION 65 applicants are accepted to Clinical Biomechanics (39 from Denmark, the remaining from Norway, Sweden and other countries). There are two ways to get accepted: through quota 1 (50 %) and quota 2 (50 %). Regulations, conditions and requirements are different in the two quotas and more information can be found on the attached USB fl ash drive. For Danish students, the admission requirements to the programme are: Danish A, Physics B, Chemistry B or Biotechnology A and English on B level. Students from Nordic countries do not require Danish A, as it can be replaced with the highest level in Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic or Finnish. 5 [CLINICAL BIOMECHANICS - A WORLD-CLASS STUDY PROGRAMME] In today s knowledge society, the choice of education has become one of life s most important decisions. With the chiropractic study programme, you obtain a solid research-based education ranking among the best in the world. The programme structure is modern and focused on providing the candidate with profi ciencies to master a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders in both private practices and at hospital wards. The chiropractic programme at the University of Southern Denmark is the only one in the world which is completely integrated with medical science. It has the unique quality that fi eld experts teach all subjects. For example, a professor of neurology teaches the subject neurology, while experienced chiropractors, of whom many are also active researchers, teach the more clinically oriented subjects. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT The chiropractic programme at University of Southern Denmark is the world s most research-based programme. The Research Unit of Clinical Biomechanics is part of a great national and international network. Annually, we produce between scientific publications, and our research is presented at international conferences. As a student you therefore have access to leading researchers, and many of the researchers teach at the programme. Thus, you can be certain that the chiropractic programme at SDU builds on the newest knowledge. As a student you have a chance to actively participate in the research environment when you write your Bachelor s or Master s dissertation. You also have the opportunity to enrol in the PhD programme after graduation.
