A key reaserch focus is consumer culture The research conducted at the Department of Marketing and Management aims to understand the complex interaction between individuals, organisations and markets. Staff examine globalisation at the individual consumer level and at the organisational level in terms of design, communication and market strategy in an ever-changing market environment. The research activities at the department of Marketing and Management cover five key areas : Consumption Studies International Market Strategy Product and Innovation Management Strategic Communication Strategic Organisational Design Researchers at the department frequently publish in well known international journals, often in collaboration with colleagues from foreign universities such as Stanford University, the Wharton School, London Business School, Univeristy of Utah, Florida State University, Leeds University Business School, Copenhagen Business School and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Consumption Studies examines how consumer behaviour creates a cultural bond that connects consumers with each other and with firms, products and brands. We emphasise a socio-cultural perspective in our work. Research is primarily conducted in the following fields: conceptual critique and development in consumer research, globalisation processes and their influence on consumer patterns, and consumption symbolism and branding processes. International Market Strategy focuses on the marketing activities of B2B companies in today s increasingly global marketplace. Since the mid-eighties, we have conducted research on marketing, strategy and the internationalisation of firms. Contrasting with the slow and gradual internationalisation process described in classical models, research since the mid-nineties has focused on newly formed companies such as International New Ventures and Born Globals and their founders. Marketing and Management Product and Innovation Management examines how a company s competitive advantage is constantly challenged by the rapid emergence of new technologies and the introduction of new products to the market. These trends point to the importance of new product development and innovation. We study how to effectively introduce new products to a market, taking into account a company s consumer base and competitors. In doing so we also examine the company s resource base, network relationships and knowledge transfer with business partners. > >

[Campus Odense] The Department of Marketing and Management receives considerable external funding for its research projects. In addition to research, the department enjoys close cooperation with private firms and other institutions. This enables us to bring real-life examples from the contemporary business world into the classroom. Recently we established the link.sdu as a forum for collaboration. The most important collaborations are: Strategic Communication looks at market-related communications in businesses as well as public and private institutions. Topics covered include: corporate communication and identity; integrated communications; organisational communication and identification; public relations, advertising and Semiotics. Rather than seeing communication as a distinct marketing parameter, we regard it as a managerial process with organising properties that influence and shape contemporary organisations. Strategic Organisation Design aims to develop and disseminate scientific knowledge in strategic organisation design and examine its managerial implications. We focus on topics such as organisational learning and adaptation, evolutionary models and classical organisation theory. We believe that the development of theory is necessary when solving practical design problems. Therefore, the research unit strives to contribute to theory that helps identify and tackle design problems. The research expertise at the department of Marketing and Management is reflected in the wide range of courses we offer. The Department offers TWO MASTERS of Science in Economics and Business Administration, in. : Marketing, Globalization and Communication. This master s programme is designed for students who want to understand how to build relationships with partners in the present global market conditions. The focus is on decision making and communication in international marketing, based on intercultural understanding and communication skills. Strategy & Organization The aim of the master s programme in Strategy and Organization is to provide competence in contemporary strategic management and organization design. The contents represent state-of-the-art in strategy and organization research and practice. This programme is designed for students who want to pursue a career in management consulting, corporate staff functions, general management or business development. Brand Base A membership-based collaboration with more than fifty companies in which practitioners and researchers jointly develop expertise in branding. Conferences, seminars and joint collaboration are used to explore the synergy between theory and practice. the born global network In this joint programme with Odense Trade Council, researchers and external consultants guide and supervise the development of 15 small companies with a strong potential for international sales. business intelligence This project has developed an IT software package that helps managers of small businesses to better understand and use data. As a result of the package s success, a business has been established in Odense. share2know This project has developed an interactive web portal for benchmarking and learning in human resources in collaboration with several companies and the Centre for Leadership in Copenhagen. > >

Business and Economics The Department of Business and Economics covers a wide range of research: from the mathematics of finance to the economics of sport, art, and leisure; from statistical and econometric methodology to its applications in business and economics; from accounting, management science and macroeconomic policy to optimal control theory and differential games; from international economics and supply chain management tithe economics behind environmental regulation, and from benchmarking, and game theory in microeconomic models to housing economics. With a worldwide reputation for highquality research, the department has four core research areas: Accounting; Finance Management Science Economics. The Council for Research has designated Applied Microeconomics and Accounting the department s key research areas. Most projects involve mathematical methods and techniques, statistics and econometrics and IT-tools. A > 11 > 10

[Campus Odense] number of these projects combine theory and empirics. The department is involved in most degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Social Science, where business, economics, statistics and econometrics are integral parts of most programmes. Several courses are taught in, offering international students choice and flexibility. Economists are trained to quantify likely outcomes of decision-making and identify the best course of action. As a result, mathematical calculations and computers are integral parts of most economists daily work. We therefore expect you to have a basic knowledge of spreadsheets, statistics and mathematical methods such as calculus, integral calculus, optimisation methods and computation of compound interest. We can teach you modern business economics and economics if you have sufficient mathematical knowledge to understand modern economic literature. Our courses focus on solving real-life problems in business and economics. Many problems in the business world are best described, analysed and solved using an economic model. Real-life problems are the starting point for building and analysis of models, but models are only meaningful if they contribute to better decision-making in practice. Using real examples from the workplace, you will learn how to use economic theory and economic models to make better decisions Our focus on theory application is reflected in our co-operation with a number of firms in southern Denmark and further afield. Many students choose to write their master thesis in cooperation with these firms. The research expertise at the department of Business and Economics is reflected in the wide range of courses we offer. The Department offers a Masters of Science in ECONOMICS WITH PROFILES IN GLOBALIZATION & EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, ECONOMICS & BUSINESS, APPLIED MICROECONOMICS OR HEALTH ECONOMICS. THREE MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: 1) FINANCE 2) GLOBAL LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AND 3) ACCOUNTING. Some 100 students attend our courses at master level, and many are international students. The full master programme can be completed in two years. The first year is typically devoted to core courses, after which students can specialise in a chosen field. Students only spending one or two terms in Odense are usually given the opportunity to design their own study programme to suit their interests. The department is a friendly place with close relations between students and staff, which means the standard of education is second to none. Most students are willing to put in the effort we demand, later enjoying senior posts in sectors such as consultancy, government and finance. This department offers you the chance to be taught by highly acclaimed researchers and to build the foundations for a prosperous and challenging career. There are nine professors, 16 associate professors and three assistant professors at the department. Some edit international journals. Others are members of the Council for Research, board members of international research associations, a number external funding. Our researchers publish their work in leading international journals and play an active role in public debates in Denmark. All staff members offer courses in their field of expertise, which means students enjoy an education with a strong foundation in research. > 13 > 12

Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management The research at the department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management has a strong international focus. Thanks to the department s many global research groups, staff regularly publish research in international journals and attend conferences worldwide. Entrepreneurship examines the formation of new companies, growth in young companies, and corporate ventures and entrepreneurship. The subject is predominantly studied from a dynamic-evolutionary perspective. Research is interdisciplinary, drawing on marketing, applied accounting, applied finance and product management. A considerable amount of research is done in cooperation with the International Entrepreneurship Academy. Relationship management: Research on company collaboration, inter-organisational subjects and supply chains is interdisciplinary. Management, control and development assume new implications when studied from a relationship perspective. Thus research develops management theory, managerial concepts and management tools, which can contribute to international research and direct improvements in company management. > 15 > 14

[Campus KOLDING] The department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management has a broad research profile in: Organisations: entrepreneurship; network organisation and relationship management, organisation culture, competence development and management. Marketing: relationship marketing, innovation and business development, and network and value chains. Applied accounting, applied auditing and product management: supply chain management, quality in accounting services, and external accounting from an interdisciplinary perspective. The department has several research projects, many of which are in cooperation with national and international groups. New research groups are regularly established in the department with varying participants over time. The department of Enterpreneurship and Relationship Management houses the Centre for Small Business Studies, a research unit focusing on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form a substantial part of the business community. Its research projects focus on organisational problems and management practices in SMEs. Staff are also investigating SMEs role in relation to the development of society, the formation of new companies and entrepreneurial activity in Denmark. > 17 > 16

Environmental and Business Economics The Department of Environmental and Business Economics specialises in two main areas of research: Environmental Economics and Enterprise Development. A strong international focus means researchers participate in conferences and networks around the world. Our research in environmental economics covers different regulation methods under varying degrees of strategic behaviour and risk. It also covers environmental assessment, cost-benefit analysis and valuation of non-market goods. Our research in enterprise development deals with development of enterprises and with enterprising behaviour. Our researchers therefore specialise in project management, competence development, innovation and knowledge based management, sustainable development, and marketing research. The Department of Environmental and Business Economics is situated at the Esbjerg campus, a collection of modern Scandinavian-style buildings where some 800 students are enrolled. We take pride in creating an informal atmosphere in which students and teachers know each other by name and can discuss matters in class, small groups or supervision. The campus has close links with the nearby Esbjerg Technical Institute. Esbjerg campus is only a ten-minute bike ride from the city centre. Esbjerg is the fifth largest city in Denmark with more than 100,000 inhabitants. In 2006 it was named City of the Year. A bustling hub of cultural, sport and leisure activities all accessible by bike, the city is a great place to study. Its concert hall is famous for attracting rock and pop bands from across the country. Students will also find live music in the city s many cafés and bars. The local students union is a great meeting place. Venture outside the city and you will find long, white beaches and idyllic islands, some of them only a short ferry crossing away. > 21 > 20

[Campus ESBJERG] At The Department of Environmental and Business Economics we offer courses for international students at Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. level. Our undergraduate Business Programme has courses that are also open to students. This way, international students and students are able to get to know each other, work together and socialise. The Department of Environmental and Business Economics also offers two Master of Science in Enterprise Development and in Environmental and Resource Management and participates in MSc in International Tourism and Leisure Management. These study programmes are also open to students, once again allowing international and students to meet and work together. The Department also offers international masters courses to students from Public Health and Biological Oceanography. The Department teaches around 80 international students each year. The Department of Environmental and Business Economics houses the Centre for Fisheries & Aquaculture Management & Economics (FAME), an International research School offering Ph.D. courses and workshops in conjunction with other European institutions. The Department has recently founded the Centre for Tourism, Innovation and Culture to strengthen research ties with the tourism and leisure industries. The Master Programme in Economics and Business Administration, Enterprise Development teaches students how to manage enterprise development in firms and public organisations. The programme combines courses in advanced marketing and management. It places a strong emphasis on the combination of theoretical and practical skills, which are valuable in the workplace and in developing enterprises. Classes often involve project work, in which you apply theory to practical problems, often in cooperation with local enterprises. The Master Programme in Environmental and Resource Management recognises that long-term solutions to environmental problems involve knowledge from several disciplines. Therefore candidates that can combine the different knowledge and form sustainable solutions are needed. The courses have therefore elements from both natural and social science. Another profile of the programme is to teach in management skills. The Master Programme in International Tourism and Leisure Management is an internationally oriented programme with equal focus on humanities and social science subjects. The programme is for students, who wish to specialize in management in the growing tourism and leisure industry. The education has been top quality and the lecturers were extremely competent. The campus offers an active student environment with both social and professional experiences. Lisbeth Brøde Lyhne, Enterprise Development, graduated 2003 (currently employed as Marketing Coordinator at Baxi A/S). I know the staff worked very hard for us, and that s why we had such a good time there. We learned a lot and at the same time we enjoyed it. Thanks to all of them, I can say that the year I spent at University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg, was one of the best years of my life. Cristina Sánchez Piña, Undergraduate Business Programme 2005/2006. > 23 > 22

Border Region Studies The Department of Border Region Studies has focus on regional development - economics and culture and is rooted in the -German border region. It is part of the University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Social Sciences, but holds also the humanities. Focus is on regional development across borders in time, space and academic disciplines. The research is cross-disciplinary and deals with the development in European border regions including European integration and co-operation efforts. It is based on a holistic view upon socio-economic and human development and its framework in a contemporary and historical perspective. Consequently the regions are studied in their regional, national and international context within economic, political, social, institutional, cultural and linguistic areas. And minority studies are included. The staff covers expertise within regional economics and policy, business administration i.e. marketing, management, and trade, law, geography, sociology, anthropology, history and sociolinguistics. The department of Border Region studies contributes to both fundamental and applied research and the researchers also carry out research-based investigations for businesses, organisations and authorities and have a wide information activity. They participate in national and international research networks and collaborative projects with many other researchers, institutions and organisations. > 25 > 24

[Campus sønderborg] International study programmes The Department of Border Region Studies offers six international study programmes, which are all taught in, reflecting the research focus of the department. Some of them are in cooperation with the university in Flensburg European Studies The international study programme in European Studies is intended to give students theoretical and analytical skills in European issues with a special focus upon the regional dimension. The Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSc) in European Studies builds upon core qualifications in business administrations and economics, together with intercultural communication, European political and institutional theory, and regional science. The Master of Social Sciences (MSc) in European Studies focuses more thoroughly upon European and regional issues. The programme is designed for students who want to build the future Europe by managing development across nations and regions using key project management skills. With the ability to cooperate and communicate to a high standard, students prepare to manage European development in businesses, public institutions and government agencies regionally, nationally and internationally. Business Administration The International Bachelor of Science in Business Administration aims at giving the student a basic foundation and a theoretical understanding of the problems that modern enterprises face. The program focuses on international aspects of the core disciplines in business administration, i.e. international management, international marketing and international economics and regional integration. Electives, the subjects chosen for the seminars and the bachelor project give the possibility of tailoring the BA study. The bachelor project is usually conducted in close co-operation with companies or organizations. The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Economics and Business Administration, Business Relationship Management (BRM) provides a frame of reference that enables the student to be able to see the value creation of companies in a broader perspective, from sub-supplier to end-user. A special feature of the study programme is the student s close interaction with the companies in a closely affiliation with a company during the study. The study is intended for jobs that require a general knowledge of a company s value creation system and an in-depth understanding of Business-to-Business marketing, logistics and sourcing as management tools. The International BA in Business Administration and Modern Languages (BA int.) combines the different disciplines of economics with business language and cultural/area studies. The Master s degree in International Business Administration and Modern Languages (cand.merc. int.) is for students who want to develop their skills in the domains of economics and business language. > 27 > 26

Founded in 1966, the University of Southern Denmark is a modern institution with five faculties. The University enjoys close links with business, industry and institutions across the world. Every day more than one thousand researchers and 17 thousand students build on the University s reputation as a centre of academic excellence. The Faculty of Social Science covers a wide range of study areas such as business, economics, political science, journalism and law. The Faculty has close links with the four other Faculties: Health Sciences, Science, Engineering and Humanities. The Faculty s interdisciplinary dimension means it enjoys a unique and diverse research and educational profile. Research The Faculty s PhD programmes: Business Economics, Economics, Political Science and Law. Studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences While many universities across the world may seem similar, they often vary in their teaching methods. An important part of any stay at a foreign university is getting used to these differences. The most obvious difference for international students at the Faculty of Social Sciences is the long duration of a single course. At graduate level students are often only expected to take three courses per term. Students have considerable choice over which courses to study and are expected to be able to study independently. The Faculty expects students to take a mature and critical approach to their studies, including preparing thoroughly for class. Students are expected to be able to analyse and discuss reading material in class. Teaching/Working Methods The students own initiative is very important in higher education, practically as well as theoretically. Students do not have to attend lectures, but are strongly encouraged to do so. The teaching methods used also require initiative from the students. Examinations and evaluation Examinations normally take place shortly after the respective courses have finished. Exams are in December/June for exchange students and January/June for masters students. Since examinations are held twice a year, re-examination will normally take place after the next term. Students are expected to read all material in the reading list before being examined on it at the end of the term. Whilst many courses involve course work during term time, most weight is placed on the final examination. The Faculty of Social Science Internationalisation Education at the Faculty has a strong international focus, participating in the European Community s Socrates and Tempus programmes, as well as the Nordplus framework set up by the Nordic countries. Students are encouraged to add an international element to their education by studying abroad for a term. Likewise, the University has strict rules about plagiarism. Plagiarism is the presentation of another s work as one s own. This includes copying portions of text from textbooks, the Internet and articles without quoting the source and presenting the ideas as one s own. An important element of a university education is adopting a proper scientific methodology. Citation is a central element. > 31 > 30
