3 Experience and long term commitment During the past five decades, HDPE products for pipe applications have been steadily replacing traditional materials such as cast and ductile iron, steel, clay and concrete. It all began more than 50 years ago with the first Hostalen pipe grades. Since that time, LyondellBasell and its predecessor companies have been one of the leading suppliers of materials used in the manufacture of gas and drinking water pipes. Well-known materials include PE80 and PE100. With the Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin, LyondellBasell closed the gap for PE100 materials with very high stress crack resistance, and now offers a full range of products. Since they were first introduced, PE100 with very high stress crack resistance have been selected by customers for use in gas and drinking water pipes for distribution networks. The Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin has been especially developed to address customer requirements in the area of non-conventional pipe installation methods, where a superior resistance to stress cracking is necessary. Typical nonconventional pipe installations include relining and sandbedless pipe laying. The Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin is a PE100 resin, produced using LyondellBasell s Advanced Cascade Process (ACP). With three reactors in cascade, the process enables finetuning of the properties balance that is required for grades used in demanding applications, such as pressure pipes in combination with non-conventional pipe installation methods. Catalysts and compounding technologies used in the Hostalen ACP process enable LyondellBasell to provide customers with the high performance materials they depend upon to meet challenging application needs. Potential Customer Applications The Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin can be considered for use in multi-layered pipes in combination with the Hostalen CRP 100 black resin. The Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black material is used by customers e.g. for the outer surface layer. Customers report that these types of multi-layered pipe constructions offer cost-competitive solutions without sacrificing performance such as slow crack growth. In addition, customers report that pipes made from the Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin have facilitated installation at construction sites using non-conventional pipe laying technologies. 4 High performance material Tests carried out at the Bodycote materials testing institute in Sweden confirmed that the new grade can provide high levels of performance for use in pressure pipe applications. Conducted according to ISO 9080 standards, the tests simulated a 50 year service life at temperatures of 20 C. The results showed the material s excellent hydrostatic strength under these conditions (Fig.1). Fig.1 ISO 9080 evaluation The performance in the Full Notch Creep Test (FNCT) according to ISO is illustrated in Fig. 2. Test specimens made from the Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin have passed more than 10,000 h of testing time. Therefore, Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins exceeded in the tests the requirements of DVGW GW 323 standards by more than 200 percent. In Fig. 3, test results of pipes made from Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins in the Notch Pipes Test according to ISO are plotted versus the minimum requirements of the European gas standard EN 1555 and of the PE100plus association. The pipes have passed 10,000 h of testing time and exceeded therefore during the tests the above-mentioned requirements by a factor of twenty. 5 Technical benefits Fig. 4 shows the performance of pipes made from Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins in the S4-test according to ISO standards. Good performance of HDPE pipes versus rapid crack propagation is required by EN 1555 standards if they are used in gas distribution networks. Pipes made from Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins at dimensions of 110 x 10 have exhibited no rapid crack propagation at a pressure of 25 bar and at a temperature of 0 C. This is 150 percent more than required by EN 1555 standards. S4-tests conducted at -15 C have not shown failures up to a pressure of 20 bars. The stabilization package is compliant with most drinking water regulations worldwide, and Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins meet the food approval regulations of the EU. LyondellBasell s Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resin provides superior organoleptics, which makes it the resin of choice for customer drinking water applications. Processability By using Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins, high line speeds with smooth pipe surfaces can be achieved. The high melt strength results in very good dimensional stability of the extruded pipe, which enables customers to produce pipes within small tolerances. It can be processed the same as PE80 or PE100 materials. Availability After initial adoption by customers in Europe, Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black resins are now available worldwide.
