ABOUT TRICK-OR-TREAT FOR UNICEF Thank you for choosing to be part of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of the longest running and most successful campaigns from the UNICEF United States Fund. As the original Kids Helping Kids campaign, it began in 1950, when schoolchildren in Philadelphia went door-to-door on Halloween collecting money using decorated milk cartons for the benefit of children in need worldwide. They raised a total of USD 17 and kicked off a global campaign that has since raised more than USD 167 million to help UNICEF continue its work for the poorest and hardest to reach children in the world. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF adds a special meaning to a beloved tradition by having children ask for donations using special Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes instead of asking only for candy and treats during Halloween. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has become a great way to teach children about the value of helping others in need and empower them to become responsible global citizens. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF was launched in the Philippines in October 2012 and has become one of many activities celebrating National Children s Month. Since 2012, Filipino children and families have raised over PHP 900,000 to support UNICEF programs for vulnerable children in the Philippines. By participating in this campaign, Filipino children and their families are starting a new family tradition. They are also joining generations of children and adults all over the world who take a little time on Halloween to make the world a better place for all children. With the money raised through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, millions of children in the Philippines and worldwide are now able to enjoy better health and nutrition; quality education; and protection against abuse, neglect and exploitation. And because UNICEF runs solely on voluntary contributions, every peso counts toward supporting this important, life-saving work. 1

MECHANICS 1. Request trick-or-treat boxes. If your school is interested in participating, UNICEF can provide the materials needed. Ginny Buensuceso at with the total number of students participating to request special Trickor-Treat for UNICEF boxes. Children can take the box with them to collect donations when they go trick-or-treating on Halloween. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes Alternatively, your school can raise funds for UNICEF in its own way: Halloween Contest Hold a Halloween-themed contest, whether it s who comes in the best costume or who can decorate their UNICEF Trickor-Treat box best. One peso equals one vote the one with the most votes wins! After an awarding ceremony, donate the funds collected to UNICEF. Candy Sale/Bake Sale Hold a Halloween candy and food sale, with each class sponsoring a specific food item, and donate part or all of the proceeds to UNICEF. Talent Showcase Have students show off their singing or dancing acts for an audience of family and friends. Charge an entrance fee that serves as a donation to UNICEF. Art Auction Have students write stories and poems or create drawings, paintings and clay sculptures. Auction these off to family and friends, and donate the proceeds to UNICEF. 2

MECHANICS 2. Donate your funds. After Halloween is over, collect all the money raised and donate via check addressed to UNICEF Philippines. Checks may be picked up at school with a brief turnover ceremony or be delivered to our office by calling (02) How They Did It Students of Multiple Intelligence International School (MIIS) raised almost PHP 100,000 as part of their school-wide Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign. Instead of simply soliciting donations, students at each grade level thought up creative ways to raise funds, such as holding food sales and talent shows. 3

WHAT YOUR MONEY CAN DO The more money you raise, the more children you help! Donations collected by official UNICEF staff and volunteers go to UNICEF Philippines, where it will be carefully used to help children who need it most. Here are some examples of what UNICEF can accomplish with the money raised from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF: PHP 500 Can help provide two families with a month s supply of safe drinking water PHP 1,000 Can help provide four people with essential hygiene supplies such as soap, towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes and water pails PHP 2,000 Can help provide four children suffering from severe acute malnutrition with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), vitamins and medicine Did you know? UNICEF has been working in the Philippines for over 65 years on sustainable long-term programs and strategies advancing children s rights in the areas of health and nutrition, education, HIV/AIDS and child protection. 4

Talking about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Here are some tips on speaking to children about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. You can also use the stories and guide questions in this toolkit to discuss issues of children in need and how kids can help other kids through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Key Talking Points Use these notes to help guide your discussion: What is UNICEF? The United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) is a United Nations programme that serves to protect and advance the rights of the world s most vulnerable children in areas such as health and nutrition; education; and protection against violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. It was created in 1946 to provide emergency relief to children affected by World War II. Together with the government and other partners, it has been helping the poorest and hardest to reach children in the Philippines for more than 65 years. What is Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF? Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is an education and fundraising campaign designed to teach children about children in need in developing countries and to empower them to help others. It was launched in the Philippines in 2012 and has since raised around PHP 715,000. Proceeds have benefitted children affected by armed conflict in Zamboanga and educational programs supported by UNICEF. The 2014 campaign aims to raise funds for children affected by emergencies such as armed conflict and calamities. What are some of the issues that disadvantaged children face? We often take the following for granted: easy access to food and clean water, the availability of school, and access to medical help when needed. But in many parts of the Philippines, there are children who only have unsafe water to drink. Others don t have access to 5

Talking about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF school or must work to support their families. Many have never seen a doctor or remain unprotected against deadly but preventable diseases. How does UNICEF help address these issues? Some of UNICEF s work in the Philippines includes: training teachers and providing learning material and school supplies; helping provide vaccinations against illnesses such as measles and polio; screening and treating children for malnutrition; providing pregnant women with medical attention and promoting exclusive breastfeeding; giving children and their families access to safe water and sanitation; promoting healthy hygiene habits in schools; and delivering humanitarian relief in emergencies. How does Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF enable us to help children in need? UNICEF runs only on voluntary contributions, so individual donations play a big role in helping sustain its long-term strategies and programs. Donating to UNICEF means you are helping children living in disadvantaged areas receive a better start in life and a chance at a brighter future. Tips for Speaking with Children Use these tips when explaining Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to children: Keep your speech short, simple and spontaneous. Engage children by asking questions like Why is helping other kids important? Bring something children can see, hear or touch, such the UNICEF Trick-or-Treat collection box or a short video about UNICEF. Children like to imitate and feel included. Have them repeat motivational catch phrases such as saying, Why do we trick-or-treat for UNICEF? and replying, Because every kid counts! Don t be surprised if children ask questions and seek justification for the way things are. Speak honestly and openly. Don t be afraid to tell a child you don t know the answer. You can always tell the child or adult present that you will get back to 6

Talking about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF him or her with the information, and contact UNICEF if you have any questions. Be aware of sensitivities children may have towards issues such as poverty and abuse. Avoid characterizing donors as saviours of poorer communities. Instead, emphasize the importance of working together with many people, including beneficiaries, to drive change. Describe UNICEF s work in tangible terms like: Every day, we eat lots of nutritious food that gives us enough energy to play and go to school. Some kids don t have enough to eat or don t get to eat the right kind of food, and they become very sick or even die. When we help UNICEF, we help kids like these receive special food and medicine that makes them healthy and active again. Use positive words, and be dynamic and energetic. 11 Real Stories Merkan s Story When health workers visited an evacuation camp in Zamboanga City in October 2013, they found 34 malnourished children. One of them was Merkan, who suffered from the worst kind: severe acute malnutrition. If left untreated, a child with severe acute malnutrition has a 50-80% chance of dying. It was easy to tell Merkan was ill. He was frail and bony. He was irritable and didn t want to be disturbed. To help save his life, Merkan was admitted into a nutritional programme supported by UNICEF. The program taught Merkan s parents how to properly feed him and treat his condition. UNICEF also gave Merkan ready-to-use therapeutic food that allowed his parents to continue the treatments at home. Slowly, Merkan began gaining weight and got better week after week. After staying in the programme for nearly two months, Merkan was well enough to be transferred to a supplementary feeding programme for another three months. Thanks to the dedication of Merkan s family and help from UNICEF, Merkan is now a much healthier and more active child. ACF International Zamboanga Discussion Questions: How did this story make you feel? What did you think of this story? What did Merkan need? How did UNICEF help Merkan? How did Merkan s family work with UNICEF to help him get well? Why is it important to work together to help others? How can donations from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF help children like Merkan? View the full story here at: Before and after: Merkan is now healthier, thanks to the dedication of his father and help from UNICEF 8

Real Stories A Special Delivery After a calamity, medical supplies often run low and equipment can be lost or damaged a big challenge for survivors and the health staff trying to treat them. When Typhoon Yolanda hit in November 2013, one such community that experienced this strain was the town of Estancia on Panay Island. From wounded survivors to children suffering from respiratory infections, the town s health clinic was overwhelmed by a sudden surge in patients after the typhoon. Before the typhoon, our health unit had about 40 to 50 patients a day. But since [then], every day we have more than 100, said nurse Judith Dalton. UNICEF Philippines/2014 UNICEF helps deliver life-saving supplies to remote locations during emergencies Part of UNICEF s work is ensuring that life-saving supplies reach the children and families hardest hit by calamities, especially those in remote locations like Estancia. Just two weeks after Yolanda struck, UNICEF delivered emergency health kits containing medicines and medical devices to help the townspeople in Estancia get the treatment they needed. Each kit contains enough supplies to care for around 10,000 people for three months. KLM, the national airline of the Netherlands, flew in the health kits among other supplies for free all the way from UNICEF s supply division in Copenhagen, Denmark to the city of Cebu. From there, the kits were delivered to affected areas by truck and by ferry. Discussion Questions: How did this story make you feel? What did you think of this story? What did the town of Estancia need? How did UNICEF help the town of Estancia? How did UNICEF work with KLM to help the townspeople get what they needed? Why is it important to work together to help others? How can donations from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF help people affected by emergencies? View the full story here at: 9

Real Stories Water for All Located south of Tacloban, the small town of Dulag was one of the communities devastated by Typhoon Yolanda in Although the town s water system survived the typhoon, the lack of electricity meant clean water could not be pumped and distributed throughout the entire town, resulting in an acute water shortage. Instead, the townspeople relied on unprotected sources like hand pumps as well as a small generator that was too weak to distribute the water at full capacity. UNICEF Philippines/2013 Back to normal: UNICEF helps restore acess to safe water during emergencies Access to clean water is critical in emergencies. Clean water helps prevent diarrhoea and other water-borne illnesses as well as enables survivors to maintain good hygiene and cook and clean properly. Dhruva Majagaiyan, a Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) specialist from UNICEF, met with the town s mayor and determined that they needed a stronger generator to run their water supply. In less than a week, the UNICEF team in Tacloban arranged and dispatched the generator the town needed. All 40,000 people in Dulag had access to an uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water again and a backup power source for future calamities. Discussion Questions: How did this story make you feel? What did you think of this story? What did the town of Dulag need? How did UNICEF help the town of Dulag? How did UNICEF work with the town s mayor to help the townspeople get what they needed? Why is it important to work together to help others? How can donations from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF help people affected by emergencies? View the full story here at: 10
