3 Gender-based violence... targets individuals or groups of individuals on the basis of their gender includes any act which results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)

Instill terror Humiliate and degrade individuals, their families, and their communities Cultural and ethnic destruction Exploit stigma upon rape victims and their children Weaken marital and communal relations Displace populations, and hamper ability of communities to reconstitute Destroy group bonds, causing pervasive, and even deadly effects for women in particular
