2 This leaflet will provide you, as a new resident of Hillerød and citizen of Denmark, with useful information and details of whom to contact. Most questions can be answered at the Council, Trollesmindealle 27. Here you will find the Citizens Advisory Centre and the Job Centre or contact us by telephone on You can ask for an interpreter to be present at meetings with the Council or doctor. This service is provided free of charge. Some of your rights as a new citizen in Denmark Free health insurance with a yellow health card. This covers doctor and hospital visits (though not prescription charges). Contact the Citizen s Service Centre to register and apply for a health card. Danish lessons for up to 3 years, paid for by the Council. There are both day and evening classes. Contact the Job Centre. Help with finding employment including guidance, courses, apprenticeships and subsidised work experience. Contact the Job Centre. A course in Danish culture and society. 3 Danish websites: (The official website from the Job Centre) (Also in English) (Also in English) If you have children Day Care: Children between 0-6 years can be admitted to various day care centres: Crèche (0-3 years); daycare in private home (0-3 years); kindergarten (3-6 years) or integrated centre (0-6 years). The monthly fees are between kr Children who do not speak Danish can start in a language day care centre, Globus, from approximately 2 6 years. Contact the language adviser Tina Hudlebusch on tel. no School: It is compulsory for all children between the ages of 6-18 years to attend school. Schooling is free in Denmark. Contact Mubeen Hussain on tel. no Assessment of foreign qualifications You can get your qualifications assessed and recognised at IU. It is recommended if you wish to seek employment or further your education in Denmark. It is free of charge. Apply to the Citizen s Advisory Centre or on the Council s website: Infants: Mamma Mia is an international mothers group for expectant mothers and for those with infants under six months old. 4 Possibilities for financial support In order to receive financial support from the Council you must have a nem account. Contact your bank for details. Family Allowance Family allowance is paid to all families with children under 18 years. For children under 15 years payment is made quarterly. For children between years payment is made monthly. Payments are paid automatically into your nem account. Housing Benefit If you live in rented accommodation and are on a low income you can apply for Housing Benefit. Further information is available at the Citizen s Service Centre. One-off Payments Persons on a low income can apply for a one-off payment to cover unexpected expenses such as unusually large dental or medical expenses. Apply to the Citizen s Service Centre. Cash Help Some people are entitled to cash help if they lose their jobs. Contact the Job Centre if you think you are eligible. Unemployment Benefit Unemployment Benefit is an insurance to which you are entitled even though your residence permit is dependent on your being self-supporting. You must have been a member of an A-kasse for a set period before you can claim. Contact the Job Centre or the A-kasse. Change of Address If you are planning to move, it is important that you register your change of address at the Citizen s Advisory Centre. It is your own responsibility to find accommodation. You can obtain a list of companies that rent properties. Ask at the Citizen s Advisory Centre or at: borgerservicecentre/liste%20over%20boligselskaber.pdf Private accommodation can also be found in the local newspaper or on the internet. 4
