1 -- VAN DEURSEN -- The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group, and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family. Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary. Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general but with exceptions they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular name s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling (for both surnames and given names). Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes, John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms). Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself. As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify all data with independent research. I welcome, and would be grateful for, any additions or corrections, especially with source citations. copyright 2012 Patricia A. The marriage record for Abraham s parents shows that Pijter Jans van Doersen was from the small village of Deursen in northern North Brabant. Abraham s mother, Pulijn Vinken, was from Roeslare, a small city in West Flanders, Belgium. 1 Abrahamse Pieterse was in Manhattan with two other skilled millwrights in He evidently stayed for a while, then returned to the Netherlands where he married. 1

2 Abraham Pieterszen again came to New Amsterdam around In 1636 he took possession for the Dutch West India Company of the Island of Quetenesse, in Narricanese Bay, near Rhode Island. What the Dutch called "Sloop's Bay" is the West Passage to Narragansett Bay, and the island that Abraham Pietersen Van Deursen occupied as a trading post is now called Dutch Island. In 1638 he was spoken of as the first miller in New Amsterdam. He became one of the leading citizens in New Amsterdam being in 1641 elected one of the "Twelve Men" who tried to advise Governor Kieft in his administration of the affairs of the colony. In 1643, Governor Kieft was considered in need of control as well as advice and the "Eight Men" were elected and continued in office until 1647, Abraham Pietersen Van Deursen being a member of this most important body also. In 1658 he was given a permit to build a water mill on the "Fresh Water." This was a stream emptying into the East River near the present James and Cherry Streets. About this time he commenced to manufacture groats, which until then had been imported from Holland. At various times he leased bouweries (farms) belonging to the Company. In New Netherland the miller was often licensed as an innkeeper for the convenience of farmers who were waiting for their grain to be ground, so this position he sometimes held. Evidently believing in the adage, "first come, first served," he was complained of by an agent of the company, whom he kept waiting in turn. The authorities ordered him thereafter to grind the grain belonging to the company at once, and not in turn. This is the only charge ever made against him on the records. 9 Jan Jan Joosten, pltf. v/s Abraham Pietersen, miller, deft. Plyf says, he sold to Tomas Jansen Mingael, defts. son in law, a yacht, on which there is still to be paid one thousand and fourteen guilders in sewant and requests that the yacht may be sold to obtain his pay from it. Deft. says, there is no money to pay and if the Magistrates think fit, that the yacht may be sold for the best advantage of the widow. 3 In 1665 he was taxed one guilder a week for the support of the British soldiers. At that time he was living on the "Heere Straat," now Broadway, a short distance below Wall Street. He is also called Abraham Pieterssen, Molenaer, or Miller. ---children of Abraham Pieterszen Van Deusen & Tryntje Melchior: Mattheus Abrahamsz [Van Deusen] (Tewisse; Teunis), b. about 1630; m. about 1653 Helena Robberts.
