The simulator, controlled by an instructor, allows students to engage in scenarios where the subject s reaction changes based on the student s approach. 4 Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training Certificate 1-year certificate 2 semesters, beginning in September and February Both theory and extensive hands-on practice Learn how fire departments operate the kind of equipment used on the job, techniques, rescue strategies, fire apparatus operation, and emergency care for patients Courses on fire behaviour and combustion chemistry as well as hazardous material awareness Firefighter fitness training Students experience the everyday reality of firefighting by practicing skills in a burn tower Firefighter Students receive guidance on finding employment including support with résumés and job interviews that will prepare students to build a gratifying career as a firefighter Course taught to the NFPA 1001 Level I and Level II Firefighter level Graduates are eligible to write the OFM Provincial Firefighter Test Humber offers Fire and Emergency Services Specialized Rescue courses. These courses will enhance your skills and benefit you in your pursuit of a career as a firefighter. A Certificate of Participation is granted upon successful completion of each course. Specialized rescue courses are taught by experienced firefighters 6 Photo: Firefighter Equipment Pre-Service Firefighter students learn real life skills at Humber on industry standard equipment. Several live burn exercises at a burn tower give students the chance to gain professional confidence while putting their skills to the test. 7
5 Photo: Play Therapy Lab Human Services students learn how to integrate developmental, preventative and therapeutic approaches in the Play Therapy Lab at Humber for learning as close as it gets to real life. 6 Social Service Worker with part-time option Three unpaid field placements Both theory and hands-on practice Study human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counselling skills, and how to work with groups and communities Work with people experiencing distressing events and situations Students learn how to help people assert their rights and meet their responsibilities in ways that empower them 3 field placements allow participation in more than one type of agency Graduates may find work as intake workers, case managers, residential counselors, community/family support workers and mental health or outreach workers with a variety of organizations including: Shelters Community Centres Refugee Centres Youth Employment Agencies Hostels Drop-in Centres for Homeless People Social Assistance Agencies Group Homes Agencies With Clients Who Have Psychiatric Issues, Developmental Delays or Disabilities Agencies in the Field of Corrections Graduates may apply for membership with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers ocswssw.org and the Ontario Social Service Worker Association osswa.ca for advanced standing in the Child and Youth Care Degree program at Humber as well as apply their credits toward study at many other post-secondary institutions Developmental Services Worker 5 field placements including: A 3-week placement that takes place in the fall semester of year one The second 3-week placement that occurs in the winter semester of year one The 3 consecutive placements during the winter semester of year two, for 4-days per week for 14 weeks Both theory and hands-on approach Study the stages of human development, developmental disabilities, psychology and pharmacology Learn about available community support services, practical intervention techniques, person-centered planning, supporting people with autism, augmentative forms of communication and effective responses Build skills in interpersonal relationships and counseling, communicating with clients in sign language, safely administering medication, creating effective behavioural programming and assisting individuals with physical disabilities Residential Counsellor Educational/Teaching Assistant in a School or Childcare Centre Counsellor in a Seniors Program Employment Support Worker Recreational Staff Autism Intervenor Case Manager Students and graduates may apply to become members of the Ontario Association on Developmental Disabilities (OADD). Visit oadd.org and its Developmental Services Special Interest Group (DSSIG) Graduates may qualify for advanced standing in Humber s Bachelor of Child and Youth Care degree program as well as apply their credits toward study at many other post-secondary institutions Developmental Services Worker Accelerated Full-time accelerated 10 months 3 consecutive semesters During the second semester, students complete 20 days of placement. Third semester placement is seven weeks and takes place during the summer period (May to June) The accelerated diploma program teaches skills to effectively promote the physical, mental and emotional health of individuals with special needs Learn the stages of human development, the types of developmental disabilities and the range of available community support services for this population Build expertise in our counselling labs, which provide an ideal setting to develop abilities in working with individuals with limited verbal skills Graduates support people with intellectual disabilities, autism, physical challenges or other special needs. This can lead to a range of positions, including: - Residential Counsellor - Educational/Teaching Assistant in a School or Childcare Centre - Counsellor in a Seniors Program - Community Support Worker their academic credits toward further study at many postsecondary institutions. 8 How to Apply Important Dates Step 1: Choose your program area of study. Once you have researched your programs and have two to three programs you would like to discuss, you can book an advising appointment with one of our Student Recruitment Advisors, contact the program coordinators or visit the Open House. International students should visit international.humber.ca for information about programs and services at Humber. Visit us on campus. Visit the humber.ca website more details on campus tours and events. November 2014 Colleges begin to receive application infor ma tion from ontariocolleges.ca for fall 2015 admission. February 1, 2015 All applications received by ontariocolleges.ca on or before February 1 will be given equal consideration in the application process. Applications received after February 1 will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of space in the program. Check for program availability. Step 2 Individuals can apply online at ontariocolleges.ca or call or toll-free (in Canada only). First release of admission decisions. Global Citizenship Certificate Launched in the fall of 2014, Humber s innovative new Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) prepares students for engaged living in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing world. Through a combination of academic courses, travel experiences and extra-curricular activities, students will gain a highly valued global perspective, deepening their understanding of human diversity, interconnectedness, and cultural complexity and enhancing their sense of personal and community responsibility. Humber Students Study Abroad Global experience is invaluable in today s interconnected world. Each year close to 300 Humber students go abroad for an enriching study and work experience. Whether just starting to research options, or actively preparing for departure, here students will find information and resources to guide them through every step. Transfer Agreements Bachelor of Applied Arts - Criminal Justice Griffith University, Queensland Australia Humber graduates will be considered for direct admission into the Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice program provided that all academic and other entry requirements of the Master s degree program are met. Child and Youth Worker 25 Transfer options Including Australia and USA Humber graduates with an overall GPA of 70 per cent or more will be considered for admission to Humber s Bachelor of Child and Youth Care degree program in over 25 educational institutions. Social Service Worker 25 Transfer options Including Australia and USA Humber graduates with a B average (3.0 GPA) or higher will be eligible to receive up to 45 transfer credits toward a four-year Bachelor of Social Work in over 25 educational institutions. A $95 fee (payable to Ontario Colleges) is required for each academic year and must be submitted at the time of application. Ontario Colleges receives, records and then forwards application information to the appropriate college(s) For the 2015/2016 academic year, please apply before February 1st, 2015 for equal consideration. International students can apply directly to Humber College. Step 3 All educational documents should be forwarded to ontariocolleges.ca. Grades will be transmitted electronically for all applicants currently enrolled in an Ontario high school. Step 4 Beginning early December, Humber will acknowledge that applications have been received and provide MyHumber access details by using the address provided on the Ontario College s application. Humber may need to contact you during the admissions process. It is important that ap plicants keep their contact information up to date. Step 5 Applicants may begin to track their application online at MyHumber. May 1, 2015 Applicants must confirm which offer of admission they are accepting. This must be done online at ontariocolleges.ca or by phone at Late confirmations will only be accepted if space is available in the program. June 24, 2015 Tuition fees are due. An offer of admission may be withdrawn if an applicant fails to confirm acceptance and/or pay fees by the stipulated deadlines.
