4 TRANSLATION SKILL 1. Many Chinese names have three parts: the family name (or last name), the generation name, and the given name (or first name). 2. More than half of all Chinese people have one of these last names: Chen, Lin, Huang, Lee, Zhang, Wu, Wang, Cai, or Liu.

7 TRANSLATION SKILL 3. The generation name comes from the words in a poem. 4. Traditionally, each family has its own generation poem.
8 TRANSLATION SKILL 5. The first generation uses the first word in the poem for its generation name. 6. Often girls names are words for beauty or flowers and boys names are words for strength and health.
9 TRANSLATION SKILL 7. Some choose European first names for their children, but many do not. 8. Parents first choose a popular name, and then they change it a little to make it interesting.
10 TRANSLATION SKILL 9. For example, they start with the name Mark and then add quon to create the new name Marquon. 10. Other parents create a name that has a nice sound.
11 TRANSLATION SKILL 11. Parents choose different sounds to create a new, interesting name. 12. In Spain, a name usually has three parts: the first name, the fathers last name, and the mother s last name.
12 TRANSLATION SKILL 13. Traditionally, parents give their children the grandparents first names. They name the first boy after the father s father. 14. Parents name the second boy after the mother s father and the second girl after the mother s mother.
13 IDENTIFYING THE TOPIC AND MAIN IDEA To identify the topic of a reading, ask: What is the reading about? To identify the main idea of a reading, ask: What is the most important thing the writer says about the topic? 16 SCANNING FOR INFORMATION Scanning is reading very quickly to find pieces of information in a text. For example, you scan a phone book for a name or number. You move your eyes quickly over the text. You do not read every word. You just look for the words or information you want.
17 SCANNING FOR INFORMATION Scanning can help you answer questions quickly. Follow these steps. 1) Read the question. - Underline the important word or words in the question. 2) Scan the reading text for the words you underlined. 3) Circle the information you need in the reading text. 4) Write the answer to the question.
