User Autonomy Darren Spruce Head of Kontrols & IT services (KITS)
Who am I? British 20 years ESRF software engineer mainly MX beamlines Maxlab Jun 2010 British, born in 1966 Joined ESRF Jan 1991 control room GUI s for the machine experimental division programming group BLISS group, ID14,Protein Crystallography tcl/tk, mcagui, prodc, pxweb ispyb mxcube Joined MAXlab (on sabbatical leave from ESRF) on June 1st 2010 worked on control systems in maxlab and future control system standards for max IV Head of Controls and IT role from September 2011
Kontrolls & IT Services (KITS) Controls Software Vincent Hardion, 8 years Soleil synchrotron, Tango, maven ID's... Andreas Persson, 3 years maxlab accelerator and beamlines Mirjam Lindberg, 3 years maxlab beam lines Antonio Milan, 6 years ALBA, LLRF, beam line, Sardana Johan Fosberg, maxlab scientist, 2 years professional sw development Paul Bell, particle physicist CERN LHC triggering user applications + more, depending on funded beam lines Controls Hardware Julio Lidon- Simon, 6 years ALBA, +2 ESRF, motion(icepap) specialist, electronics expert Jerzy Jamroz 5 years ALBA, ALBA timing system, electronics expert (+2 starting recruitments ) Networks, Servers, Systems Tobias Lundquist, 3 years maxlab, deep general IT knowledge, systems architect Carl Cristian Arlock, already proven himself during linac installation. Daniel Liikamaa, 3 years maxlab, systems admin (+2 recruitments starting) IT Support Lars Håkansson + Dean Bazina Andras Vancsa, 13 years PC support at maxlab Strategy, Scientific & Information Management Systems Krister Larsson, 8 years at maxlab mx beamlines ands control system Jason Brudvik previously nuclear physics, now web development. Alberto Nardella, 5 years ALBA information management (+1) 3 An expert Team
The Controls Environment Instrumentation motors, monitors, scalars, bpms, timing, plc, analogue io, digital io, detectors Software device drivers, device servers, generic tools, applications Organisation accelerator physicists, beam line scientists, engineers, specialists
One Problem is..
Scale Number of projects = number of scientists X ideas
Collaborate with the Scientists to contribute to the control system A large percentage of the work force They can contribute according to their needs They can work on it outside normal working hours (i.e. maybe fix problems or finish an experiment when controls guys are tucked up in bed)
User Autonomy, How? Understand their needs Use Common tools Easy to use Build Trust Educate We needed to change the culture maxlab both a blessing and a curse Have enough expertise to understand how their needs translate into the control system understand that the business involves doing new things and taking risks, therefore not defining everything at the start build a team with enough knowledge of the business including some scientific knowledge Choose a common set of tools that everybody can use Sardana, Tango, python, git Make the tools easy to use focus on configuration as a way of programming script to make workflow easier Build trust among the scientists demonstrate the tools work educate and train them encourage them to program and give them the opportunity to practice regularly deliver new features on request
Sardana and Tango GUI (user) Middleware(user/ developer) Device Server(developer) python Tango/Sardana Core (tango/ Sardana developer) terminal QF1U Motor QF1U Motor QF1U Motor QF1U Motor User Panel AllenBradley DS Sardana Bump Pseudo DS Sardana Configurator Pool DS MacroServer DS Tango MiddleWare Layer Software Configuration (jive) Hardware (electronic eng)
Results of our adventures, so far Common Tools we use Tango, Sardana for the MAX IV project 4 hosts 156 Server instances more than 20 Classes 1038 devices attributes commands
Results of our adventures, so far How Many scientists have worked on the control system? MAX IV Project, almost all subsystem owners Laser subsytem entirely implemented by responsible (Filip) python used by scientists to create simple Tango devices on existing maxlab beam lines build the complete laser subsystem run scans for the alignment of the new SPECIES beam line code is committed to a common repository
Results of our adventures, so far Education 6 courses were run in 2013, including Tango/Sardana, PyTango, Tango/Matlab Building Trust still in early stages to prove we can provide all the solutions they need we do not forbid other programs Veritas beam line will start with their existing software and migrate to our control system
