1 GOLDEN GATE BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY ARIZONA CAMPUS L Christian Theology II Earl Waggoner Assoc. Prof. of Theology and Church History Spring 2006, select Tuesdays office: fax: COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a continuation of the focus on major doctrines of the Christian faith, concentrating on the selected doctrines of God the Holy Spirit, Salvation, Christian Living, the Church, & Christian Hope. Particular attention will be paid to Baptist doctrinal distinctives. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the conclusion of this course, students should be better able to: (1) express a clear understanding of selected major Christian doctrines (J1, F11, R18, R19); (2) employ a theological method that includes Biblical exegesis, historical developments, philosophical insight, and experiential realities to articulate Biblical truth with accuracy, clarity, and coherence (R18); (3) be knowledgeable in a variety of theological approaches and methodologies (J1, R19); (4) articulate their own personal theological positions (C6, C7); & (5) function as responsible pastoral theologians in applying Christian truth to contemporary life and the mission of the church (C6, C7, C8, C9, C10, M16, R18, R19, R20, R21). COURSE RELATION TO DEGREE PROGRAMS This course is required for the MDiv, MTS, MAEL, and all diploma programs. TEXTBOOKS Grenz, Stanley. Theology for the Community of God. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, McGrath, Alister E. The Christian Theology Reader. 2 nd ed. Oxford: Blackwell Publishers, Baptist Faith & Message 2000 EVALUATION 1. Each student is required to read the assigned material before coming to class. He or she will be held accountable for the Grenz & BF&M material through QUIZZES. Individual students must initiate a request for a quiz make-up; it is your responsibility. The McGrath material will also be accounted for weekly. 2. Each student will complete TWO EXAMS a mid-term and a final. If the student does not contact the professor prior to missing either of these exams, the professor will decide whether a make-up exam will be given.
2 2 3. Each student shall write & submit a PERSONAL CREDO. This document will be a brief yet comprehensive reflection of the student s beliefs regarding the specific doctrines covered in class. The credo format should follow Turabian style, with pages double-spaced and typed. 12-point font should be used, and no more than two (2) pages should be devoted to any single doctrine. Though the professor expects the student to substantiate his or her beliefs with pertinent Bible references, EXTRA CREDIT will be given if the credo reflects multiple-source research (e.g., books, journals, theological dictionaries). The credo is due 16 May. The elements mentioned above brevity, comprehensiveness, substantiation, and correct style along with creativity, are the standards by which the credo will be graded. 4. Each student will complete a SEMESTER PROJECT. It will be chosen in consultation with the professor. This is designed to allow you to articulate, deploy, integrate, express pick a verb theological concepts with your particular ministry context & area of interest. Your project should contain outside research, thorough coverage, and thoughtful reflection. You are limited only by your creativity and ingenuity. The following ideas are suggestions and not an exhaustive listing. If you choose one of them, the professor will elaborate on the particular requirements for a successful project. Research paper (minimum of ten pages & seven sources) o analysis and critique of a particular theologian s approach to one or more of the doctrines considered in our class o comparison of the approaches of your chosen theologian and Grenz or some other theologian o analysis of films or popular music which address doctrines considered in our class (e.g., evaluation of the film Sister Act as an appropriate expression of doing church in urban environments) Sermon series or Bible study series addressing one or more of the doctrines considered in class Short play or worship sketch addressing the same and accompanied by a description and rationale which reflect outside research Visual work of art or piece of original music related to a theological theme in the course and accompanied by a description and rationale which reflect outside research (minimum of three sources and five (5) pages) Please do not request approval of projects not theological in nature or not within the doctrinal scope of this course. Projects are due 16 May. 5. GGBTS requires each student to post insights related to the 21 Leader-Shaping Outcomes gained in this class to the student s e-portfolio, and submission of said insights via a printout to the instructor of this course, in order for the student to complete this course. This applies only to those students under the 2003 MDiv curriculum and the MATS program. This does not apply to students continuing in the previous MDiv curriculum, nor those in the MAEL program. The student will receive an I for a final grade if he or she does not submit to the professor evidence of the above insights prior to the registrar s due date for grades.
