Graduate Highlight Clues fro ancient sharks Graduate students play a pivotal role in excavating and interpreting the fossils fro the Panaa Canal as part of a grant called PIRE, Partnerships in International Research and Education. eep in the Culabra, a geologic foration that dates back about 20 illion years to when oceans covered Panaa, doctoral student Catalina Piiento discovered evidence that ancient sharks like the 60-foot egalodon used nurseries for their young. Piiento has becoe the world expert on the ancient, giant shark, and her discoveries have contributed to the understanding of long-ago arine life. Although biologists Rankings UF is consistently ranked aong the nation s top universities: 1: Washington onthly s list of national universities that offer the best bang for the buck (2013.) 3: Kiplinger s Best Values in Public Colleges (2013); 3: Fiske Guide to Colleges list of Best Buys Aong Publics (2014); 14: U.S. News & World Report Top Public Universities (August 2013); 15: Forbes list of best public universities (2013); Student Resources ISIS, an online Integrated Student Inforation Syste, used to check adission status, to register, and to review transcripts and financial records Orientations Fall and Spring for new graduate students Graduate Student Research Foru Workshops for teaching assistants (TAs) Graduate & student organizations, Graduate Student Council, Graduate Student Advisory Council, Graduate Assistants United, Career Resource Center provides career planning and eployent assistance, Counseling and Wellness Center offers free, confidential help counseling.ufl.edu/cwc 6

knew odern sharks use shallow-water nurseries to protect their babies, fossils unearthed by Piiento provided the first evidence that egalodons used nurseries. The study provides evidence of egalodon behavior in the fossil record, says Piiento. Behavior doesn t fossilize, but we were able to interpret ancient protection strategies used by extinct sharks based on the fossil record. Facilities Aong UF s ore than 100 interdisciplinary research and education centers, bureaus and institutes are the UF Shands Cancer Center, Genetics Institute, Engineering Research Center for Particle Science and Technology, the cknight Brain Institute, Water Institute, the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, the Whitney Laboratory for arine Bioedical Research and Biotechnology, the Florida useu of Natural History, the atabase Systes Research and evelopent Center, and the Institute for Future Space Transport. Coputer Requireent Access to and on-going use of a coputer is required for all students to coplete their degree progras successfully. The University of Florida expects each student entering the junior year, as well as each student new to the university, to acquire coputer hardware and software appropriate to his or her degree progra. Copetency in the basic use of a coputer is a requireent for graduation. Class assignents ay require use of a coputer, acadeic advising and registration can be done by coputer, and official university correspondence is often sent via e-ail. Website: While the university offers liited access to coputers through its coputer labs, ost students will be expected to purchase or lease a coputer that is capable of dial-up or network connection to the Internet, graphical access to the World Wide Web, and productivity functions such as word processing and spreadsheet calculation. Costs of eeting this requireent will be included in financial aid considerations. Visit the following website for ore inforation: dell.techhub.ufl.edu/coputer_requireent.htl OR training.helpdesk.ufl.edu 8

Housing Graduate and Undergraduate Students with Failies Apartent accoodations on the University capus are available for students with failies. Applicants ust have applied to the University and have a UF I nuber and are urged to apply as early as possible because of the deand for housing. The publications and website include inforation and resources on budgeting, finding the right place to live, apartent locator, leases, city codes, landlord laws, and counity and capus resources. All services are free to students. For ore inforation, stop by the Off-Capus Life epartent in the ean of Students Office, 311 Peabody Hall, or call (352)

Graduate Highlight sell test Graduate student Jennifer Staps noticed as she was shadowing doctors in the UF cknight Brain Institute Center for Sell and Taste that Alzheier s patients were not tested for their sense of sell. That observation led her to devise a siple test, using a dollop of peanut butter and a ruler, to confir a diagnosis of early stage Alzheier s disease. The ability to sell is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline. Staps thought of peanut butter because it is a pure odorant that is only detected by the olfactory nerve and is easy to access. Average Cost of Attendance The following is a projection of estiated cost for one acadeic year for a full-tie graduate student. See for further inforation. Tuition/Fees $13,400 Books and supplies.... $1,290 Coputer/Cell Phone... $1,360 Housing $6,610 Food $4,290 Transportation $1,100 Clothing aintenance... $690 Personal $270 Total $29,010 Tuition/fee figures are projected estiates for for incoing freshen and graduate students entering UF for the first tie. Tuition/fees for continuing students ay be lower. Out-of-state undergraduates should add $22,278 to projected tuition/fees. Out-of-state graduate students should add $17,394 to projected tuition/fees. 10

Staps found that patients in the early stages of Alzheier s disease had a draatic difference in detecting odor between the left and right nostril the left nostril did not detect the peanut butter until it was an average of 10 centieters closer to the nose than the right nostril. But we plan to study patients with ild cognitive ipairent to see if this test ight be used to predict which patients are going to get Alzheier s disease, Staps said. Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships GRAUATE Assistantships are available through individual acadeic units. Stipend rates are deterined by the eploying acadeic unit. Interested students should ask their acadeic-unit offices about the availability of assistantships and the procedure for applying. Early inquiry is essential to eeting application deadlines. The Graduate School Fellowship progra (GSF) represents the ost prestigious graduate student award available at the University. Funded at nationally copetitive levels, these highly desirable awards support students in all progras and departents of the University awarding a Ph or FA. The GSF provides at least a full four years of support through a nationally copetitive stipend and tuition waiver for qualifying students in Ph progras. The FA awards are for at least two years for students in FA progras. ost GSF will receive both research and teaching assignents. For ore inforation on the fellowships available, please contact the graduate coordinator for the degree progra of interest. The Grinter Fellowship naed in honor of r. Linton E. Grinter, ean of the Graduate School fro 1952 to 1969, helps recruit truly exceptional graduate students. Stipends are suppleents to existing assistantship stipend awards, and are norally $2000 to $4000. For details, contact the graduate coordinator in the appropriate acadeic unit. 14 Graduate Highlight Breaking cheical bonds Natali i Russo works in coputational biology in the University of Florida s epartent of Cheistry and Quantu Theory Project, conducting research on environentally friendly ways to break the cheical bond of the oxygen olecule. Breaking the oxygen bond requires high energy, and current processes use expensive etals. i Russo is researching the use of enzyes to weaken the bond, aking it possible to break the oxygen bond without using etals. Such a breakthrough would allow for the developent of new industrial and pharaceutical applications. Adission The UF Graduate School welcoes you to apply for one of the highest quality and ost affordable graduate education opportunities available today. The graduate adission process is coordinated by the graduate departents and the adissions office. Although Cohn issed that developent years ago, he says, It is really quite gratifying to have y earlier work corrected by y own student. Leal said the award builds up y confidence as a young scientist and allows e to think about riskier but ore rewarding scientific questions.
