6 Graduate Highlight Clues fro ancient sharks Graduate students play a pivotal role in excavating and interpreting the fossils fro the Panaa Canal as part of a grant called PIRE, Partnerships in International Research and Education. eep in the Culabra, a geologic foration that dates back about 20 illion years to when oceans covered Panaa, doctoral student Catalina Piiento discovered evidence that ancient sharks like the 60-foot egalodon used nurseries for their young. Piiento has becoe the world expert on the ancient, giant shark, and her discoveries have contributed to the understanding of long-ago arine life. Although biologists Rankings UF is consistently ranked aong the nation s top universities: 1: Washington onthly s list of national universities that offer the best bang for the buck (2013.) 3: Kiplinger s Best Values in Public Colleges (2013); 3: Fiske Guide to Colleges list of Best Buys Aong Publics (2014); 14: U.S. News & World Report Top Public Universities (August 2013); 15: Forbes list of best public universities (2013); Student Resources ISIS, an online Integrated Student Inforation Syste, used to check adission status, to register, and to review transcripts and financial records Orientations Fall and Spring for new graduate students Graduate Student Research Foru Workshops for teaching assistants (TAs) Graduate & student organizations, Graduate Student Council, Graduate Student Advisory Council, Graduate Assistants United, Career Resource Center provides career planning and eployent assistance, Counseling and Wellness Center offers free, confidential help counseling.ufl.edu/cwc 6

7 knew odern sharks use shallow-water nurseries to protect their babies, fossils unearthed by Piiento provided the first evidence that egalodons used nurseries. The study provides evidence of egalodon behavior in the fossil record, says Piiento. Behavior doesn t fossilize, but we were able to interpret ancient protection strategies used by extinct sharks based on the fossil record. 10 Graduate Highlight sell test Graduate student Jennifer Staps noticed as she was shadowing doctors in the UF cknight Brain Institute Center for Sell and Taste that Alzheier s patients were not tested for their sense of sell. That observation led her to devise a siple test, using a dollop of peanut butter and a ruler, to confir a diagnosis of early stage Alzheier s disease. The ability to sell is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline. Staps thought of peanut butter because it is a pure odorant that is only detected by the olfactory nerve and is easy to access. Average Cost of Attendance The following is a projection of estiated cost for one acadeic year for a full-tie graduate student. See for further inforation. Tuition/Fees $13,400 Books and supplies.... $1,290 Coputer/Cell Phone... $1,360 Housing $6,610 Food $4,290 Transportation $1,100 Clothing aintenance... $690 Personal $270 Total $29,010 Tuition/fee figures are projected estiates for for incoing freshen and graduate students entering UF for the first tie. Tuition/fees for continuing students ay be lower. Out-of-state undergraduates should add $22,278 to projected tuition/fees. Out-of-state graduate students should add $17,394 to projected tuition/fees. 10

11 Staps found that patients in the early stages of Alzheier s disease had a draatic difference in detecting odor between the left and right nostril the left nostril did not detect the peanut butter until it was an average of 10 centieters closer to the nose than the right nostril. But we plan to study patients with ild cognitive ipairent to see if this test ight be used to predict which patients are going to get Alzheier s disease, Staps said. Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships GRAUATE Assistantships are available through individual acadeic units. Stipend rates are deterined by the eploying acadeic unit. Interested students should ask their acadeic-unit offices about the availability of assistantships and the procedure for applying. Early inquiry is essential to eeting application deadlines.
