1 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE First Generation iscan Flame Scanner False Flame Signal Contact: or Dear Valued Customer, It has recently come to our attention that Coen Company, Inc. s first generation iscan flame scanners, if operated improperly at temperatures above the design rating (Overheated Operation), may generate a false flame signal. This false flame signal could prevent a first generation iscan flame scanner from detecting an actual loss of flame and potentially result in the unsafe accumulation of un burned fuel in the furnace. To ensure that any such Overheated Operation does not lead to unsafe operating conditions, we have elected to replace all existing first generation iscan flame scanners with iscan2 flame scanners, free of charge. The iscan2 flame scanner utilizes an improved detection cell with a higher temperature tolerance and incorporates logic that will shut down the iscan2 flame scanner in the event temperatures in excess of the design rating are experienced. To assist us in the replacement of your first generation iscan flame scanners, please take the following steps: 1. First, determine if your first generation iscan flame scanners have experienced any Overheated Operation. Attached is a procedure to determine if your first generation iscan flame scanners have experienced any Overheated Operation. Steps 1 through 4 of this test procedure should be performed immediately. a. Overheated Operation. If you determine that any of your first generation iscan flame scanners have experienced Overheated Operation, immediately remove the overheated first generation iscan flame scanners from service and contact us at or replace@coen.com. We will send to you an iscan2 flame scanner for each overheated first generation iscan flame scanner you have, on an expedited basis, at no charge to you. NOTE: You will be required to return all first generation iscan flame scanners. We will provide for the return shipping. b. No Overheated Operation. If you determine that any of your first generation iscan flame scanners have not experienced Overheated Operation, you can decide to continue to allow those first generation iscan flame scanners to remain in operation until a replacement is received. Contact us at or replace@coen.com and we will replace such first generation iscan flame scanners as stock becomes available, at no charge to you. NOTE: you will be required to return the first generation iscan flame scanners. We will provide for the return shipping. Even if you have no Overheated Operation first generation iscan flame scanners at this time, you should conduct a periodic check for signs of overheating until the iscan2 flame scanners are received.

Second, determine if any of your scanners are the Multiple Burner ( MB ) version of the first generation iscan flame scanner. If you are unsure if you have a MB scanner, see the attached picture of a first generation iscan flame scanner; if there is a MB in the Model section of the label, then it is a MB version of a scanner. If you have a MB version of a first generation iscan flame scanner, you will need to determine whether your first generation iscan flame scanner has the Solar Rule disabled. The potential for a false flame signal on MB versions of the first generation iscan flame scanners is increased if you have disabled the Solar Rule. If you are using the MB version of the first generation iscan flame scanners, please follow step 5 in the attached test procedure to determine if the Solar Rule has been disabled. If the Solar Rule has been disabled on your first generation iscan flame scanners, we strongly recommend that it be reenabled and remain enabled. 3. After you have taken the above steps, please contact us Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 AM 5 PM CDT at or replace@coen.com for instructions on receiving your free replacement iscan2 flame scanners and returning your first generation iscan flame scanners. Please have the following information available when you call: 1) The number of first generation iscan flame scanners at your facility and/or in your possession (including any in use, in inventory, etc.); 2) The serial numbers of all of your first generation iscan flame scanners. To locate the serial number, see the attached picture of a first generation iscan flame scanner. The six digit serial number can be found in the third box on the label and after the designation S/N: ; and 3) Which first generation iscan flame scanners, if any, have experienced Overheated Operation. Equipment needed: USB Converter (PN ) The first generation iscan flame scanner DSFComm Software (Version 2.5 or higher) The first generation iscan flame scanner user s manual ( , July 2010) found on CD supplied with each flame scanner or via download via the COEN FTP website. (See separate download instructions). 1. Establish Communications: a. Connect Communications wires from the first generation iscan flame scanner to the USB converter as detailed in section 1.9 (Page 14) of the first generation iscan flame scanner user s manual ( , July 2010). 5 For Assistance Call b. Ensure the driver for the USB converter is installed and working properly. The new system requires Installation of USB drivers. Refer to CD provided with each scanner kit for instructions. This kit permits direct connection from the scanner RS485 to your computer USB port. c. Running the Program DSFComm: select DSFComm from the Windows Program Menu. The main DSFComm window will appear. Connect the USB converter to a PC and make sure that the Com port is correctly identified. Next, connect one scanner to the converter. Open the DSFComm software and select View / Who s On the Network. If the communication is setup correctly, a new Window will pop up and will indicate scanner name, serial number and Comm Address. Otherwise, it will indicate communications error. 2. Check the Maximum Recorded Temperature a. Double click inside the bar graph and open the Setup Screen (select Setup/Program from the menu). b. With Setup Screen opened, click on View from the menu bar and select Temperature to display both the real time and maximum recorded temperature. c. If the Maximum Recorded Temperature is greater than 80 C STOP HERE. Take a screen shot (<Fn><Prnt Scrn>) and the screen shot to replace@coen.com. You MUST follow safe industry practices while conducting these tests. 3. Check Sensor DC Level a. Double click inside the bar graph and open the Setup Screen (select Setup/Program from the menu). b. With Setup Screen open, scanner powered, and the scanner lens covered so sensor is in total darkness, look to the far left of the setup screen under the section that indicates Flame Signal DC and observe the raw DC Flame signal value. In the example below the raw DC Flame Signal value is 5.3dB. c. If the Flame Signal DC Level is greater than 3dB (increases in the positive direction) STOP HERE. Keep the scanner s sensor in total darkness; close the Setup screen by clicking on the X in the upper right hand of the Setup screen. d. Double click inside the bar graph of the bar graph screen and select Flame Frequency. e. If the Noise Level is greater than 36dB (increases in the positive direction) STOP HERE. (If the SOLAR RULE is disabled, enable it immediately by clicking on the check box noted below.) 10 Note: Existing iscan1 users, the new program works with both iscan1&2 s. Remove older versions of the DsfComm software. Do NOT delete any of the Graphic Files (.grf) or the Scanner Files (.dsf) as the new program will run these. Once the Add/Remove is complete, follow the instructions below to install the new version. First unzip the iscan2 Software & User Manuals Rev2.zip. Once Un-Zipped, RUN the SETUP per below

13 Next Unzip the DsfComm4.4.zip file. Replace the 4.3 exe file with the new 4.4 version.
