2 September 20, 2020 Twenty-Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ, The Archdiocese publishes a quarterly magazine called Always. In the Fall 2020 issue, there is an article entitled The Virtues of Isolation - A Bronx Prayer, that centers on Sr. Maria Pia, from Corpus Christi Monastery in the Bronx. Her spiritual insight for herself and the other sisters I have shared about this order a few times on past Corpus Christi Sundays. You may read the article along with the full magazine at These past six months of our own isolation has been challenging. All of us dealing with the fear of the pandemic, of possibly getting Covid-19, some actually getting it and of course, sadly those who have succumbed to it. We are trying our best to cope. Restaurants have opened limited inside dining, we made the best of this year s summertime, and now our children and grandchildren began another academic year in some sense of in person and/or remote learning. Even the Church has been affected. Not being able to gather in person for public celebrations during the end of Lent, Holy Week and the Glory of Easter Sunday and the Easter Season. Once public worship began again in mid-june, we have been faced with limitations of only allowing 100 people at each mass. Some of us may still feel nervous about returning to church. I would like to explain in detail what we are doing here at Immaculate Conception to ease any fear or worries a parishioner may have about returning to worship at mass, or come to the church for private prayer during the day. On weekends, after each mass, the church is sanitized. Two weeks ago, we began the process of using a mister to sanitize each pew. The parish purchased an Electrostatic Sprayer (fogger) which sprays a mist of charged droplets using Aerostatic charging process. This machine dispenses a water-based solution coating any surface evenly. The solution used is known as VS-1000 Disinfectant Concentrate. This Concentrate has been approved by the EPA for use against SARS-CoV-2, the corona virus that causes the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), when used in accordance with the directions for use against SARS-CoV-2 on hard, nonporous surfaces. Each evening when the church is closed, the process is done so the morning mass the next day may welcome worshipers to a sanitized church. This mister and solution will be used in the school building in the halls and every classroom in-between each religious session and class so that our children returning to our School of Religion My Time with Jesus Program will be entering a safe, sanitized building and classroom. I offer this detailed information to the parish, those who have returned since public worship started up again but even more so to those parishioners who have concerns about returning to mass. As I mentioned above, we are presently allowed 100 people at each mass. All parishioners and clergy enter church wearing masks. Every other pew is closed off and there are markings in each open pew where to sit at allowing safe distance from the other person(s) in the pew. The closest we have come to our 100 capacity at mass is 82. Presently at our weekday 7:30 morning mass we average 25 to 30 worshipers. A parishioner upon their first return to church may find our morning mass a more comfortable setting for themself. I share all this because I miss so many of you, more importantly, Jesus misses you! I pray that this information may indeed put to ease any concerns any onc of you may have. May God in his loving mercy keep us all safe in His care, -Fr. Herbert T. DeGaris
3 Church of the Immaculate Conception SCHOOL OF RELIGION My Time with Jesus OUR FAITH IN ACTION The Sacrament of Baptism Did you know Baptism is the beginning of life our supernatural life. Because of original sin (Adam and Eve), we come into the world with a soul which is empty of God s life. Supernatural life, which is the result of God s personal and intimate indwelling, is absent from the soul. At Baptism, God becomes present in the soul, and the soul shares God s own life called sanctifying grace. Baptism was instituted by Jesus when He was baptized by his cousin, St. John the Baptist, and when He commanded His apostles to go and baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. It was at His baptism that the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus and God revealed Jesus as His Beloved Son. Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. (CCC1213) Baptism is necessary before one can receive any other sacrament. It is the first sacrament of Christian initiation which is completed with the sacraments of Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist. Baptism makes us children of God, members of Christ, members of the Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. This means that: Baptism permanently relates us to God and is necessary for our salvation. Baptism is our eternal union with God. It imprints an indelible character on the soul of the recipient and can be received only once. Anyone not baptized may receive the sacrament of Baptism. Adults need to be introduced and participating in our faith before receiving Baptism. This period of preparation is called the catechumenate. For infants, it is required that there be a reasonable hope that the parent(s) will bring the child up in the Catholic faith. The celebrant of Baptism is either a Bishop, priest, or deacon, but in case of an emergency anyone, man or women, can validly baptize by pouring water three times over the head of the candidate while saying the proper words of: Name of child/person, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The water of Baptism symbolizes both death with Christ and life with Him. In Baptism, we die with Christ under the waters and then we rise with Him. Water is a symbol of life. Every life known needs water. In Baptism, we are given the very life of God. By Baptism, all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin. (CCC1263) Being anointed with holy chrism signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit. The white garment symbolizes that he/she has put on Christ. A candidate for Baptism must have at least one Godparent. The Godparent cannot be the mother or father of the one to be baptized. The Godparent must be at least sixteen, be a Catholic in good standing (practicing Catholic) who has been confirmed and is receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist regularly. There can be two Godparents (a Godfather and a Godmother). Non-Catholics cannot be Godparents, but can be a witness to the Baptism. Something to think about The water of Baptism truly signifies that our birth into the divine life is given to us in the Holy Spirit. (CCC694) Sin and the consequence disappear when God comes into the soul just as darkness disappears when the light is turned on. Sin is a spiritual emptiness of the soul and sin is destroyed when grace comes into the soul. So, today and every day, let us be reminded that Baptism is the basis of our whole Christian life and the gateway to life in the Spirit which gives us access to the other sacraments. In Baptism, we receive the supernatural life, called sanctifying grace (God s life) and there is passed on to the soul a permanent quality which we call the mark or character of Baptism.
