1 Call for Entries to the 2015 Background Aspen Institute Italia is an international nonprofit association dedicated to fostering analysis, debate, and the exchange of knowledge, information, and values. The Aspen Institute is based in Washington, DC, with campuses in Aspen, Colorado and on the Wye River in Maryland. It also has partner Aspen institutes in Berlin, Bucharest, Mexico City, Madrid, Paris, Prague, New Delhi, and Tokyo. The Una bella impresa! project Core concept and objectives. Over the past thirty years, the epic narrative of industry that characterized the post World War II reconstruction years has waned in Europe, especially in Italy, and the virtuous relationship between life, work, and industry has broken down. Being in industry is today often perceived negatively by the public at large, and especially by young people. It is crucial for the future of Italy and its economy to counter this frequently quite prevalent anti industrial mindset, so as to replace it with a fresh new narrative on being in business, and in particular, on being in manufacturing, highlighting that industry brings benefits for all, not just entrepreneurs. Aspen has therefore decided to launch Una bella impresa!, a multifaceted project with a number of different strands, incorporating: a scientific study component, as a natural extension the Institute s role as a think tank; an educational element, aimed at passing on the wealth of experience of the Institute s members; and lastly, communications and publicity activities geared to bringing the new narrative to wider public attention. Since every major cultural shift starts from the younger generations, Aspen has chosen to establish a competition aimed at students attending filmmaking courses whose own original works, whether created individually or in collaboration with others, convey to other young people what Italian industry is all about today, imparting drive and passion for a key sector of the Italian economy and, consequently, of Italian society. Objectives and sections of the Competition This Call for Competition Entries is restricted to students of film and multimedia art schools who are the authors of original audiovisual works that depict Italian industry, offering a positive narrative targeted mainly at young people. The Film Competition is divided into 3 sections: A) Industry 4.0, aka the advent of the smart factory. The growing computerization of industry is transforming production systems, while the sharing of data and information over the internet made possible by the cloud is enabling machines to communicate with each other intelligently, paving the way for the Internet of Things. In the smart factory, the production line is taking on new forms.

2 B) Working in industry today: adapting to innovation. Resources, processes, energy, and value chains are changing in response to increased technological efficiency and the sweeping innovation that this is generating. Work is changing, as is the approach to it: even in factories, specific skillsets, adaptability to new roles, and holistic vision are needed. C) The factory as a thing of beauty. Industrial archeology, avant garde production facilities, handcrafted finishes within complex processes, and relaxing oases in hyper mechanized environments: aesthetics and their role in representations of industry. Films entered must be a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes in duration. Entering the Competition Entry to the Competition is free, however the costs of creating and submitting audiovisual works shall be borne by the entrants. Entry to the Competition is open to students up to the age of 28 years who are attending film schools, filmmaking courses at vocational upper secondary schools (istituti professionali), audiovisual multimedia courses at upper secondary art schools (licei artistici), undergraduate courses in fine arts, music, and the performing arts (DAMS) and master s degree courses (lauree magistrali) in the performing arts and multimedia production, Specialist Masterʹs Programs (master universitari) and advanced specialization courses in filmmaking. Entry is subject to unconditional acceptance of the Competition Rules herein by filling out the Entry Form attached. Submission of material After lodging an Entry Form, students may submit their original works, whether created individually or in collaboration with others, which must be received by Aspen by no later than Friday, March 11, Works may be submitted via with a link to the film (on Vimeo or YouTube, for example), or via WeTransfer. The submission must at the same time be accompanied by: a) a completed and signed Competition Submission Form, including a Release granting Aspen Institute Italia the right to use the abovementioned material for publicity, information, and organizational purposes in connection with the Una bella impresa! project and the Competition (attached); b) a trailer for the film (up to a maximum of 1 minute in length) (optional); c) a synopsis of the film (max. 400 characters); d) a written and signed declaration by the author, or, where the submission is the work of a group of collaborators, by the student representing them (in either case, hereinafter referred to as the entrant ) certifying that all the necessary formalities pertaining to the rights of ownership in the work and the rights to dispose of it (where necessary) have been satisfied; and e) The telephone contact details, address, and postal address of the entrant and of the contact person at the relevant school or educational institution.

3 Selection and admission to the Competition Admission to the Competition is subject to selection by a Panel consisting of members of Aspen Institute Italia. The selection results will be communicated by to candidates and their schools/educational institutions and published on the Aspen Institute Italia website and on any related websites by Monday, April 4, Competition results and prizes Films admitted to the Competition will be judged by a Committee composed of members chosen from among members of Aspen Institute Italia, film directors, journalists, film experts, and personalities from the cultural sphere. The choice of Committee members will be announced on the Aspen Institute Italia website and any related websites. One winning work in each of the 3 Competition sections shall be adjudged by the Committee, whose decision shall be final. The winning entrants will be advised by Wednesday, April 20, At the same time, winning entrants will also be given details of the prize giving ceremony, which will take place at a venue to be confirmed by the end of June The prize awarded to the winning entrant in each of the Competition sections shall consist of: Hotel accommodation to attend the prize giving ceremony Publication of the winning videos on the Aspen Institute Italia website, on the specific website dedicated to the project, and on any other related sites Private visits to a selection of historical archives of films documenting or depicting industry In house traineeships with firms that are members of Aspen Competition Rules Upon entering the Competition, the authors of the participating films authorize the use and dissemination of the works submitted. By entering, each entrant undertakes to be answerable for the content of the works they submit by warranting that they have cleared all copyrights of third parties, and shall grant express permission to use such works. Entrants shall bear responsibility for the accuracy of the information they have provided, which, if their work is selected for admission to the Competition, will be used to promote and publicize the Una bella impresa! project (via the website, press releases, etc.). By signing the Entry Form, entrants are declaring that they accept the Competition Rules herein, which constitute an integral part of the said form. The Court of Rome shall be the court of jurisdiction for any disputes. All personal data will be processed in accordance with Italian Legislative Decree no. 196 of June 30, 2003 ( Code governing the protection of personal data ).
