The Cardinal is currently No. 16 in the AP poll, its first time outside the top 10 since Bonnie Samuelson scored a career-high 30 points against UC Davis Monday, becoming the first Stanford player not named Ogwumike to score 30 in a game since Stanford is led in both scoring and rebounding by underclassmen... Freshmen and sophomores have accounted for 62.2 percent of the Cardinal s minutes played, 62.7 percent of its scoring and 66.1 percent of its rebounding... Amber Orrange is on the preseason lists for all three major postseason individual awards (Wade Trophy, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy)... Kaylee Johnson is second in the Pac-12, 13th in the country and leads the nation s freshmen, averaging 11.8 rebounds per game... The Cardinal is 1-3 against No. 1 Connecticut (W, [OT]), No. 10 Texas (L, [OT]), No. 11 North Carolina (L, 70-54) and No. 11 Tennessee (L, 59-40) In those games against ranked opponents, Lili Thompson is averaging 20.0 points per game and shooting 41.8 percent. Amber Orrange is putting up 10.5 points, Bonnie Samuelson is adding 7.5 on 6-of-15 shooting from deep and Kaylee Johnson is scoring 6.3 to go along with 10.8 rebounds. This year marks Stanford s third straight season playing four ranked opponents in the non-conference portion of its schedule, but the first time since that all such foes were among the nation s top 15 at the time of the game. The Cardinal began its impressive run of Final Fours in with a tough pre-pac-10 schedule that season, playing No. 3 Rutgers, No. 2 Connecticut, No. 10 Baylor and No. 1 Tennessee before entering its league slate. Stanford currently has four non-conference losses for the first time since , when it was 6-4 entering the start of its Pac-10 schedule. The Cardinal has not lost more than four before the beginning of conference play since , when it was 4-7 prior to January. Stanford went 14-4 in the Pac-10 that season and finished overall. The Cardinal has played the nation s sixth-toughest schedule according to the most recent NCAA RPI report released on Dec. 22. It is also one of only four schools in the country (Kentucky, UCLA, Vanderbilt) to have played four games against teams in the top 25 of the RPI. Kentucky is 3-1, UCLA is 0-5 and Vanderbilt is 1-3, as is Stanford in such games. YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Cardinal are relying heavily on underclassmen in This year s production is tilted in favor of freshmen and sophomores, who have accounted for 62.2 percent of Stanford s minutes played (1,400-of-2,250), 62.7 percent of its scoring (503-of-802) and 66.1 percent of its rebounding (295-of-446). To compare, underclassmen were responsible for 33.9 percent of Stanford s minutes, 24.4 percent of its scoring and 20.5 percent of its rebounding a season ago. In those averages were 40.4 percent (minutes), 32.3 percent (scoring) and 22.8 percent (rebounding). Going back to and Chiney Ogwumike s second year on The Farm, freshmen and sophomores handled 58.5 percent of the team s minutes, 52.5 percent of its points and 48.7 percent of its rebounds. Stanford is led in scoring by a sophomore and rebounding by a freshman. Nnemkadi Ogwumike is the last Cardinal underclassman to lead her team in scoring when she put up 18.5 points per game in That s the only time in the past eight seasons it has happened. Candice Wiggins paced the Cardinal in that category in each of her four years. Chiney Ogwumike was the last freshman to top Stanford in rebounding when she averaged 8.0 per game in Ogwumike had 281 boards that year to Kayla Pedersen s 280, both in 35 games. LONG TIME: Stanford s trip to Tennessee included two losses and some uncharacteristic performances for the Cardinal. Stanford lost back-to-back outings for the first time since December 2010, when it fell on the road to No. 22 DePaul on the 16th, 91-71, and No. 6 Tennessee on the 19th, in overtime. In the past decade, Stanford has lost consecutive games only six times. Its last three-game losing streak came during its Pac-10 schedule in when it fell at home to Arizona (68-65) and on the road at Oregon State (81-65) and Oregon (72-54). In the two games at Chattanooga and Tennessee, Stanford averaged 43.0 points, shot 26.7 percent from the floor (31-of-116) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (10-of-35). The Cardinal was held to below 50 points in back-to-back games for just the sixth time in program history and first since the final two contests of the season when Stanford lost at San Jose State, 67-46, on Feb. 26 before rebounding to close out the year with a win at Cal on March 1. Stanford s loss at Chattanooga last Wednesday night was its first to a non-conference unranked opponent in the regular season since Nov. 17, 2000 when it fell at St. Mary s In that game Lili Thompson led Stanford with nine points. It s the first time in nearly two decades that the Cardinal has not had a double-digit scorer (readily available records go back to ). Stanford shot 27.7 percent (18-of-65) at Chattanooga and 25.5 percent (13-of-51) at Tennessee. In the past seven-plus seasons, the Cardinal has only been held below 30 percent shooting three times total, twice by Connecticut ( and ) and once by Arizona State ( ). IN THE RUNNING: Senior Amber Orrange, one of three team captains along with Jasmine Camp and Erica Payne, is arguably one of the best point guards in the country and has the numbers and accolades to back that up in the early going of the season. She is second on the team in scoring (12.1 ppg), third in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and leads the Cardinal in assists (3.5 apg). In Stanford s six wins, the senior is averaging 14.9 points and shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from behind the arc. In the team s losses, Orrange s numbers move to 7.3 points on 25.0

Orrange is 13th in the Pac-12 in assists, fifth in free throw percentage (.824), fifth in steals (2.09 spg) and third in assist to turnover ratio (2.44). That last statistic is also 32nd nationally. The senior is on the preseason lists for all three major postseason individual awards (Wade Trophy, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy). Orrange s layup at the 3:01 mark of the first half against New Mexico were her seventh and eighth points of the game and the 999th and 1,000th of her career. She finished the night with 18 on 7-of- 16 shooting and now has 1,082 in her career. Orrange is one of 35 Cardinal players to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Orrange has also handed out 464 assists her career, eighth in Stanford history and currently ninth among active players in the NCAA. She sits just behind a number of Stanford legends and is aiming to become the seventh Cardinal to reach the 500-assist plateau, joining Sonja Henning (757), Jennifer Azzi (751), Milena Flores (644), Jamila Wideman (585), Nicole Powell (577) and Jeanette Pohlen (560). #NEXTGENERATIONSTANFORD: Orrange leads a young group of Stanford student-athletes including her running mate in the backcourt, sophomore Lili Thompson, who has grabbed national attention with her inspired play. Thompson is sixth in the Pac-12, averaging 16.3 points per game. Either Thompson or Orrange will almost assuredly lead Stanford in scoring at the end of the season, becoming the first Cardinal guard since Candice Wiggins to do so ( ). Wiggins is also the last to play that position on The Farm and average more than 20.0 ppg (20.2; ). Thompson was named espnw National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. On Nov. 24, she added to that accolade by being tabbed as Pac-12 Player of the Week for her performances in the Cardinal s games against Connecticut and Texas. She is fourth in the Pac-12 in 3-point field goal percentage (.489), 12th in field goal percentage (.426) and ninth in free throw percentage (.775). Thompson s mark from deep is also 16th in the nation. The sophomore makes an average of 2.20 from deep per game, good for sixth in the Pac-12. KAYL CLEANS THE GLASS: Kaylee Johnson, who became just the 11th true freshman to start a season opener for Stanford since , has cemented her spot in the starting lineup with a relentless motor and knack for tracking down rebounds. She leads the Cardinal, is second in the Pac-12, 13th in the nation and leads the country s freshmen, averaging 11.8 rebounds per game. Her 22 rebounds on Dec. 14 against Santa Clara matched a career high which she first achieved on Nov. 24 at New Mexico. Johnson and Brittany Montgomery of UCF are the only players in the NCAA with multiple 20-rebound games this year. Eight of those 22 rebounds were on the offensive end. Johnson is 11th in the nation, averaging 4.91 offensive boards per game. Johnson and Chiney Ogwumike are the only Stanford players with multiple 20-rebound games in a career. Ogwumike had four such outings in her four years on The Farm. The 22 boards are tied for third in Stanford single-game history with Mikaela Ruef (at Washington - Feb. 9, 2014) and are a program record for a freshman in a single game. Chiney Ogwumike (24) and Nnemkadi Ogwumike (23) are the only Cardinal players to pull down more rebounds in one game. Johnson is one of only nine Stanford players to record a game of 20 or more rebounds, joining Chiney Ogwumike (four times), Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Mikaela Ruef, Nicole Powell, Kayla Pedersen, Jayne Appel, Kathy Murphy and Maggie Nelson. Johnson s two are among 27 performances in Pac-12 history in which a player tallied at least 22 rebounds and the highest totals in the conference this season. She s twice been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week (Dec. 1 and 15) and earned her first USBWA National Freshman of the Week honor on Dec. 16. That squad went 32-3 and advanced to the Elite Eight. Until this year, the Cardinal had also returned a WBCA All-American in every season since beginning that stretch with Jayne Appel in [Appel was an AP All-American Honorable Mention in , bridging the gap after Candice Wiggins graduation in 2008.] Consensus All-American and No. 1 WNBA draft pick Chiney Ogwumike, the Pac-12 s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, averaged 26.1 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. The season will be the first since , the year before Nnemkadi began as a freshman on The Farm, that Stanford will not have an Ogwumike on its roster. Mikaela Ruef made 36 starts and averaged career bests of 7.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game en route to All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades, her first conference postseason nod. Sara James started 22 of her 33 games, scoring 2.3 points and grabbing 1.5 rebounds per outing. BOMBS AWAY: Stanford s 3-point shooting has been its best asset according to NCAA statistics this year. The Cardinal is fourth the nation, converting at a 40.0 percent clip from 3-point range (80-of-200). Stanford has only shot better than 40 percent on 3-pointers three times in school history: (.408), (.421) and (.441). Stanford s squad was the last conference school to make more than 40 percent on the season. THREE S AND FREE THROWS: Senior Bonnie Samuelson is one of the best in Stanford history when it comes to shots from 20-feet, nine-inches away and those from 15-feet. A career 38.2 percent 3-point shooter, Samuelson has made 16 this season and has drained pointers in her three-plus years on The Farm. She s never made less than 44 in a season and reaching that number again this year will make her the seventh Stanford player to hit 200 from behind the arc, joining Candice Wiggins (295), Jeanette Pohlen (268), Vanessa Nygaard (210), Kelley Suminiski (208), Sebnem Kimyacioglu (205) and Nicole Powell (201). Her six makes from deep against UC Davis tied a career high, the fifth times she s reached that number. Samuelson scored a career high 30 on 8-of-13 shooting against UC Davis on Monday and in the process became the first Stanford player not named Ogwumike to score 30 in a game since Jeanette Pohlen poured in 31 against Connecticut on Dec. 30, Samuelson has also made 91.1 percent of her free throws on The Farm (92-of-101) and her 93.3 percent clip this season is 10th in the nation. Until a late first-half miss against the Aggies, she had made 44 straight dating back to Dec. 28, IN THE POLLS: Stanford is ranked No. 16 in both the AP Top 25 and No. 15 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. Following its two losses in the state of Tennessee, Stanford fell nine spots to 16th in the AP poll. Stanford has appeared in the AP rankings a possible 465 times out of 680 total polls since 1977 (68.4 percent), with an average positioning of 6.6. The Cardinal s 465 all-time appearances in the AP top 25 are fourth behind Tennessee (666), Georgia (516) and Texas (476). Stanford is third when it comes to all-time AP top-10 appearances (377). Tennessee is first in that category with 589 and Connecticut is second with 385. [Thanks to Mel Greenberg for that note.] The Cardinal is also 28th in the NCAA RPI released on Dec. 24. OLD DOG S GOTTA LEARN NEW TRICKS : With a dynamic backcourt and no player over 6-feet that started more than five games a season ago, Tara VanDerveer and her staff have adapted to their personnel and now feature a more guard-oriented attack with an emphasis on pace. The updated offense is in stark contrast to the triangle that VanDerveer has become known for on The Farm and implemented prior to the season. She first gained experience with the tried and true triangle during her time with the 1996 Olympic Team and was tutored in the strategy in part by Jim Cleamons, a New York Knicks assistant coach who teamed with Knicks President Phil Jackson to win nine NBA titles as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. This summer, VanDerveer and her staff spent time with Milwaukee Bucks assistant Joe Prunty and former Lakers coach Mike D Antoni, among others, to learn the intricacies of a more guard-oriented, fast-paced, pick-and-roll offense. VanDerveer at Pac-12 Media Day in late October: We really approached it intellectually, figuring, This is the problem we have, this is not going to work for this group, let s figure out something new. STREAK SLAYERS: In front of a national television audience on ESPN2 on Nov. 17, Stanford knocked off No. 1 and two-time defending national champion Connecticut in overtime, 88-86, in Maples Pavilion. The win snapped the Huskies 47-game winning streak. UConn, which went 40-0 last season, hadn t lost since March 12, 2013 in the BIG EAST Championship to Notre Dame, The Huskies hadn t lost a game in November since falling to North Carolina on Nov. 21, Connecticut s 47-game stretch was the fourth longest in NCAA history. Stanford also snapped the Huskies record 90-game winning streak with a victory in Maples Pavilion on Dec. 30, In fact, the Cardinal has ended three of the six longest winning streaks in NCAA women s basketball history. Its win over Baylor on Nov. 16, 2012 in Honolulu, 71-69, ended the Bears 42-game undefeated streak.
