This white paper will outline the potential of procurement, the conditions that are creating a talent gap and some potential strategies that corporations can undertake to close the gap. In understanding this gap, it s helpful to look at what procurement organisations are managing today. In a recent TPI/SIG survey of procurement organisational scope, several interesting insights emerged. The first was that information technology (IT) procurement (whether in procurement or IT) was about 20 percent more centralized than non-it indirect procurement. The same pattern emerged when comparing outsourcing management with broader supplier management. Both of these areas tend to be areas of significant spend and higher-complexity contracts. In both cases, a relatively high percentage of centralized management occurs outside the procurement function, suggesting that the relatively higher overall degree of centralization could in part be related to procurement not managing these functions in certain companies. This is not necessarily a good or a bad thing as long as the work is being performed effectively and key information is retained and shared within the organisation. The CPO Talent Challenge 3
