1 HFS CHICAGO SCHOLARS ANNUAL REPORT 2013
2 WORKING TO EDUCATE CHICAGO S FUTURE LEADERS Dear Friends, Across Chicago there are countless grade school students looking for someone to take a chance on them, to give them a once-in-a-lifetime break. They come from strong families, are bright, talented, and academically motivated. However, their financial circumstances often prevent their families from sending these students to schools that challenge and support their academic development. Through the generous contributions of our supporters, HFS Chicago Scholars gives them that break. We give our students tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring relationships, academic guidance and discipline and college preparation support and, in turn, our students demonstrate that they can thrive. Not only do 100 percent of our graduates gain admission into college, but 90 percent of our scholars make the high school honor roll each year. When you consider that HFS Chicago Scholars go on to top universities such as Illinois, Northwestern, DePaul, Notre Dame, Chicago, Ivy League schools (Penn, Harvard, Cornell) and Historically Black Colleges to study accounting, biology, chemical engineering, economics and become leaders in their professions and their communities, you appreciate how incredibly important that break was for these students. Thank you for your generous support of our mission. We hope you realize how far your commitment of money and time goes as well as how priceless the return on investment is. With your continued support, HFS will be able to help Chicago students be the people that they and their families know they can be. Best Regards, Desireé Pepper-Venzant Executive Director Michael J. Kennelly Founder and Chairman HFS Chicago Scholars provides the following to our scholars: Financial assistance to attend top Chicago private high schools Award-winning academic directors One-on-one mentors Four-year written commitment specifying performance expectations Educational enrichment and group activities outside the classroom College selection and admissions support HFS has raised millions of dollars to provide scholarships, tutors and mentors for Chicago high school students. Our scholars, who have an average family income of $27,500, work hard to achieve success. Over 90% of our scholars annually make the honor roll of Chicago s top high schools. Since our founding, 100% of our graduates have gained acceptance to an accredited university, including Big Ten, Ivy League, Historically Black Colleges and other top schools, with substantial financial aid packages. Page 2 We re interested in kids who are willing to work hard; kids who are willing to work for their future, their families, and their dreams. ~Michael Kennelly, HFS Founder & Board Chairman

My service experiences have pushed me out of my comfort zone and exposed me to many different situations that require leadership and responsibility. I believe if I can help a second grader with math, assist them with pronouncing a word, or expose them to the wonders of sea life, I have done my part to make a difference, which gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I know that I will continue serving others in college, maybe even through traveling abroad. The experiences of my community service will remain with me forever and are now part of my identity.
