6 Local Diploma Options Available to students with disabilities only; sometimes referred to as Safety Net 1. Low Pass Option: Score on required Regents exams 2. RCT Option* - Score below 55, but pass Regents Competency Tests (RCT) in required subject areas *Only available to students entering 9 th grade prior to ! 3. Compensatory Option 6

7 Compensatory Option Student can obtain this option if they score on Regents in Global, US History, Science, or Pathway Exam as long as the student: passes the class in the subject area, AND scores at least a 65 on another Regents exam, AND meets the district s attendance requirement ** Student must score at least 55 on English & Math NOTE: Does not apply if using the RCT option. 8 Multiple Pathways (4 + 1 Option) Option to earn a Regents Diploma by passing four Regents Exams and One Pathway Exam ELA + Math + Science + 1 Social Studies + 1 Pathway Exam Who is eligible? Students Who: Entered Grade 9 in September 2011 or thereafter Eligible to receive high school diploma in June 2015 or thereafter Humanities: Additional social studies Regents Exam or Department approved alternative. STEM: Additional Regents Exam in a different course in math or science or a Department approved alternative. LOTE (Biliteracy): Pathway exam approved by the Commissioner in Language Other Than English. CTE: Career and Technical Education pathway exam approved by the Commissioner following successful completion of an approved CTE program. Arts: Arts pathway exam approved by the Commissioner. 8

9 Exiting Credentials Handout 3 Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential New York State Alternate Assessment Students ONLY For other students with disabilities who may or may not earn a Regents or Local Diploma 9

10 Based on the CDOS Learning Standards Standard 1: Career Development Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work, explore career options, and relate personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to future career decisions. Standard 2: Integrated Learning Students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace and other settings. Standard 3a: Universal Foundation Skills Students will demonstrate mastery of the foundation skills and competencies essential for success in the workplace. Standard 3b: Career Majors Students who choose a career major will acquire the career specific technical knowledge/skills necessary to progress toward gainful employment, career advancement, and success in postsecondary programs. CDOS Standards are taught in all grades, K

11 Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential Replaces IEP diploma ONLY for students eligible for NYS Alternate Assessment Accompanied by a NEW student exit summary form that documents: NYSAA level Work-based learning experiences CDOS skill attainment level Student strengths, preferences, and interests Measureable post-secondary goals Recommendations for supports needed State/community agency referrals 11

12 CDOS Commencement Credential In addition to academic preparation, students need to be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of the CDOS learning standards. Students who receive the CDOS Commencement Credential are showing that they are ready to obtain entry-level employment. 12

13 CDOS Commencement Credential 1) The student has developed, annually reviewed, and as appropriate, revised a career plan. Student developed plan that documents: a) His/her self-identified career interests, b) Career-related strengths and needs, c) Career goals, d) Coursework, and e) Work-based learning experiences. 13

15 CDOS Commencement Credential 2) The student has demonstrated knowledge and skills related to the commencement level CDOS Learning Standards Two units of study (216 hours) in career and technical education courses and/or workbased learning experiences. Must gain at least 54 hours of Work-Based Learning experiences. 15

16 CDOS Commencement Credential 3) The student has an employability profile on the student which shows the student s attainment of the CDOS Learning Standards. Must have at least one completed in the final year of school before exiting. 16

17 CDOS Commencement Credential Principal s Discretion Principal s Discretion: Until the end of this school year, school districts can give out the credential to students who have otherwise documented their attainment of the CDOS Learning Standards. 17
