12 FACULTY FEATURES Il-Soep Shin Assistant Professor, School of Engineering, WIU-QC ou can make such a positive impact Yon students by paying attention to each individual rather than by treating them as a whole class. C ompanies expectations of new engineers include skills in using modern design tools. I enjoy teaching at WIU-QC because I can help my students develop such skills by taking advantage of the School of Engineering s state-of-the-art equipment. We can offer students hands-on experience and project-based learning. I love teaching at WIU-QC because of the wonderful opportunities for students to work with local professionals while they are in school. The Quad Cities metropolitan area has an economy based around heavy manufacturing and a strong historical tie to engineering firms. he WIU-QC School of Engineering s Senior Design Project Tcourse has had a direct impact on the local community with a significant return on investment for industrial partners. One hundred percent of the WIU engineering graduates have been hired for engineering-related positions upon graduation. Many of them were hired even before they graduated by the companies that sponsored senior design projects, and some of their first projects at the companies were a continuation of the senior designs. 10 fter many of my students have graduated, they have Ashared their experiences in industry and told me how much they appreciated what they learned in my classes, as well as how my tough teaching style helped them to learn the course material and helped them prepare to be an engineer. I feel very proud whenever I hear from a company about how well our graduates have been doing.
13 Susie Brooks Assistant Professor, Mathematics, WIU-QC of my proudest Smoments are when students make comments like, Calculus is my favorite class; I was dreading taking this class, but I really like it; or I actually understand this math, which is kind of scary. When students have Aha! moments and realize mathematics is not something to be feared, then I know I m doing something right in the classroom. I f someone asked you who won the Super Bowl 10 years ago; who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor last year; or what was the most popular song five years ago, would you be able to answer? Now, if someone asked you who your fourth grade teacher was or who taught your favorite subject in high school, would you be able to answer? The fact is teachers tremendously impact our lives. It is a career filled with passion. It is a career filled with joy. It is a career where you can not only impart your knowledge onto others, but also truly leave a lasting impression on someone. If teaching is your dream, I urge you to chase your dream. You won t regret it; I know that I never have. often see students helping their peers with I homework and projects, both within and outside the classroom walls. It s wonderful that students are able to cultivate relationships with their peers at WIU-QC. I also see a great deal of collaboration among faculty, which is evident in their academic research, committees and teaching duties. IU-QC has a beautiful campus. It is one of the many Wthings that makes my job not feel like work. WIU-QC truly is a beautiful and wonderful place to learn, work and visit. love the personal connection faculty and I students have. Since WIU-QC is a smaller campus, I believe the students feel more comfortable speaking with professors in the hallway, during their office hours and even asking questions in class. Because of this, it seems students are more likely to be successful in their courses. wiu.edu/qc 11
