As stated in the proposal, superior NRCM students would apply to the Graduate School and the Patterson School after accumulating 90 credit hours, and would concurrently complete requirements for the NRCM and Master's degrees. After a total of five years, students would receive the following : -Bachelor of Science, Natural Resource Conservation and Management -Master's of Diplomacy and International Commerce -Environmental Systems Graduate Certificate The College of Agriculture Curriculum Committee and I have reviewed the proposed University Scholars Program, and it is my understanding that John Stempel has sent you a letter in support of this proposal. All parties strongly support the creation of this program. I request that the Graduate School review the proposal and submit it to the Graduate Council for approval. If you or the Graduate Council have technical questions concerning the proposal, please contact me or Tom Greider, at , who is the Chair of the NRCM Steering Committee. 3 University of Kentucky College of Agriculture SOCIOLOGY 600 ( :arrigus Building Lexinpfnrt. [Cenhrrkp Office (606) February 20, 2001 r"nx(606) or (606) Michael Desch Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce 449 Patterson Office Tower Campus 0027 Subject : Revised Proposal for a University Scholars Program Uniting a B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation and Management, the M.A. in Diplomacy and International Commerce, and the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Systems. Dear Michael : Thank you for meeting with me on February 16, 2001, to discuss the possibility and desirability of creating a concurrent five-year academic program, under the University Scholars program, that would allow a student to complete the B.S. degree in Natural Resource Conservation and Management, the Master's degree in Diplomacy and International Commerce, and the Environmental Systerns Graduate Certificate. Pursuant to our discussion, I have revised and clarified the proposal for a University Scholars program (see enclosed) as follows. The 30-hour Master's program in Diplomacy and International Commerce would consist ofthe following components : -Major Area Courses : Fifteen hours to be determined by consultation between the student and the Patterson School. Only three hours in the Major Area would be related necessarily to Environmental Systems and, thus, would serve as Crossover hours to be counted toward the B.S. Concentration Area mid permit the student to complete requirements for the Environmental Systems Graduate Certificate. Examples ofmajor Area courses are found in the Patterson School Handbook of Available Course Descriptions. -Minor Area Courses : Nine hours consisting ofes 600 (the one-hour seminar in Environmental Systems, repeated three times) ; ES 610 (Engineering and Physical Sciences in Environmental Systems) ; and ES 620 (Biological and Medical Sciences in Environmental Systems). The Minor Area courses, along with a three-hour environmentally-related course from the Major Area, allow the student to be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Systems. -Professional Module : Six hours consisting of DIP 777 (Seminar in International Relations) mid a Methods course acceptable to the Patterson School. I strongly believe that linking the B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation and Management, the M.A. in Diplomacy and International Commerce, and the Environmental Systems Graduate Certificate would lead to a tremendous enhancement ofthe reputation of the University of Kentucky in the international arena of environmental negotiation and diplomacy. I look forward to discussing this proposal with you in the near future. Until then, ~Best Wishes, Tom Greeddr Chair, Natural Resource Conservation and Management Steering Committee Director, Environmental Systems Graduate Certificate cc : w/encl : John Stempel An Fyual Opporlunily University
