EPA Voluntary Programs Resources to Help You Fight Global Warming Air, Energy and Climate Water Solid Waste Products Education
ENERGY STAR is Voluntary public-private partnership Strategic approach to energy management Energy efficient practices and products Recognized by 70% of Americans, and internationally A strategic approach to energy management can produce TWICE the savings for the bottom line and the environment
ENERGY STAR for Commercial Buildings Nearly 30 percent of Fortune 500 companies are ENERGY STAR partners Over 60,000 buildings, representing about 8 billion square feet of space, have measured their energy performance with ENERGY STAR On average, ENERGY STAR buildings use 40 percent less energy than average buildings and emit 35% less carbon emissions ENERGY STAR buildings' utility bills are over 50 cents per square foot less than average buildings
ENERGY STAR Provides a Standardized Metric ENERGY STAR Energy Performance Rating Provides a standardized, comparable metric of whole building energy performance Compares the energy efficiency of one building against the energy efficiency of a representative sample of similar buildings (according to CBECS survey) Uses a simple score where 50 is an average building Normalizes for factors such as weather, occupancy, operating hours, and other building-specific characteristics
Is Your Building Performing Well? Is 80 kbtu/sf/yr high or low for a building? Fuel Efficiency MPG Energy Performance EPA Benchmarking Is 18 MPG high or low for an automobile?
Benchmarking The Key to Energy Savings in Buildings Benchmarking through ENERGY STAR allows you to: Track cost, energy and emissions savings Compare one building against a national sample of similar buildings Compare all of your buildings of a similar type to each other Set priorities and better plan for investments in upgrade efforts and retrofits
Financial Value of Energy Efficiency in Supermarkets For the average supermarket chain, 10% reduction in energy costs has the potential to: Boost net profit margins by 16% Increase sales per square foot by $44 Increase earnings per share by 27 cents
ENERGY STAR Supermarket Partners A&P Albertson s Bashas Bi-Lo Big Y Foods Buehler Food Markets Food Lion Fresh Brands Giant Eagle Hannaford Bros Harris Teeter HEB Grocery Lowes Food Stores Pathmark Price Chopper Publix Raley s Roundy s Safeway Stop & Shop Supervalu Sweetbay Whole Foods
Climate Leaders Industry-government partnership designed to help develop comprehensive climate change strategies Partner companies complete corporate-wide inventory of greenhouse gas emissions Implement quality management system Set aggressive reduction goals Report progress to EPA annually By participating, companies create credible record of accomplishment identifying themselves as corporate environmental leaders
Green Power Partnership Aims to increase the use of green power among leading organizations Works with hundreds of leading organizations to provide guidance on how to locate, select, and procure green power Provides credible resources, expert advice, recognition, and up-to-date market information Helps participants communicate environmental benefits of green power purchases to important stakeholder groups
Combined Heat and Power Helps companies understand how to Plan/implement cost-effective combined heat and power (CHP or cogeneration ) projects Improve operational efficiency/reliability and reduce energy costs Resources Catalog of CHP technologies Technical feasibility studies Emissions calculators Funding guidance Regulatory/permitting support
