Although Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad The Maharaja conceived Sayajirao a residential University university of in 1908 at Baroda, it became a reality only during the rule of Late Baroda,Vadodara His Highness Shrimant Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad. The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda came into existence on 9 th April Smt. Hansa Mehta was not only the first Vice Chancellor of the University but also the first woman Vice Chancellor in the country and second in the world at that time. She played a pioneering role in laying a firm foundation for an educational institution with a glorious tradition. Now it has 94 departments spreading over 6 campuses. Our University feels proud to have an alumnus like Dr. Venkata Ramakrishnan, who was conferred with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 009. Faculty of Science With the formation of the university, the Silver Jubilee Science Institute, a part of the Baroda College, was reconstituted as the faculty of Science. Foundation stone of the Silver Jubilee Science Institute was laid by Sir Issac Rufus, then Viceroy and Governor General of India, in the year 196and the construction was completed in Since 1949, the faculty offers courses leading to B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology. The Faculty added thereafter two more departments: Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biotechnology and Genome Research Centre are known for their excellent work in whole of the western India. Different regular and self-financed courses are available for the students in ten departments. Two separate departments of Environmental Studies and Computer Applications have been Started to meet the high educational standards. 3 About the Program Along with sustainable development it is a challenge before all of us that natural resources are well protected and overall environment quality is maintained. There is a need to monitor pollution in not only 11 mega cities but also in the big towns of the country. To meet the increasing demand of trained manpower Bachelors programme started in 001 and Masters programme was initiated in 010. There is increasing awareness and concern of society regarding environmental issues. Natural disasters like earth quake, which occurred in Kutch on 6 th January 001 and the rarest of the rare, a powerful earth quake and a devastative tsunami, led to a serious situation in Fukushima, Japan, on 11 th March 011causing misery to thousands of persons. Environmental planning and management can reduce the damage both to the material and human lives. Most of the people believe that the environmental problems faced by developing country like India include clean energy sources, judicious use of the natural resources and problems of pollution, climate change, lack of adequate planning etc. Illiteracy and poverty in various parts of the country make the situation critical. There is a need to generate a band of guardians of Nature who are well qualified to understand the deteriorating environment, ability to formulate future strategies and needed to maintain the purity and sanctity of the Blue Planet Earth. The credit based two year self-financed Master s Programme in Environmental Science, provides the basic training needed to generate technically competent man-power. Comprehensive understanding of the physical, chemical and biological mechanisms, working under natural conditions and the alterations brought about by human interventions is aimed to be developed through this course by adopting an interdisciplinary approach. Regular practical and industrial training imparted in the final semester makes them competent enough to handle various environmental issues at the work place. Future Prospects There is increasing awareness and concern in society regarding environmental issues. Every industry today realizes the necessity to control the environmental pollution resulting from industrial processes. At present these are tackled by chemists, biologists, engineers and others who do not, by training, competent enough to take a holistic view of environment The programme provides the necessary expertise in environmental auditing, planning and management Conservation of natural resources like water, soil and minerals and protecting biodiversity losses are to be better understood and practiced. Protection of forests is to be done on priority basis which can make this planet a healthier place to live. This course is designed to have certainly better job prospects for students in industries; provide avenues in various Government Organizations as well as career in research and teaching institutes. 3

4 Outline of the Course The syllabus for the course has been designed to provide advanced knowledge about environment and its chemical and biological components. The knowledge about plants growing in different habitats and wildlife present in these areas is being provided. In final semester industrial training is imparted in an industry/or an institute of national repute. Forests are source of life for the planet, and for its people, a detailed knowledge is imparted to the students on natural wealth of forests, minerals, oceans, rivers, lakes etc. Harmony between forests and people is a key challenge and this will only help to conserve the forest vegetation in a better way and reducing the CO level and global warming at the other end. All these aspects dealing with biodiversity, microbial flora and changing climate are part of two year degree programme. Other aspects like control of industrial pollution as well as health hazards are covered in detail. M.Sc. Environmental Science (Self Financed Course) 1. Nature of Course : Interdisciplinary course. Medium of Instruction : English 3. System of Teaching : Semester system 4. Academic Schedule : years Course with 4 Semesters First semester starting in July, 014 Maximum Intake : 40 Students Teaching Program 1. Semester system will be followed for M.Sc. Environmental Science.. Each year will be divided into two semesters with at least 15 weeks teaching (Including Practical) will be given. 3. In each semester (Except in the last or 4 th semester) there will be 5 theory courses of3 credits each and practical of 4 credits each. 4. In the 4 th semester a candidate will have to do project work based on placement in an industry,an Institute of repute or an organization related to Environment. 5. Each course will have 3 lectures per week and practical will be of 8 hour per week. 4

One Internal Test will be conducted for each theory and practical in each semester which will carry a weightage of 30% These marks will be carried forward if student reappears in Paper/ Practical. Semester examination will be conducted for each theory paper and final results of each theory paper will be prepared by considering 70% weightage of university examination and 30% weightage of one Internal Test. Examination will be conducted by a board of examiners. The candidate will have to make up the deficiency and appear for exams in Practical if failed. Practical: Totally internal with continuous evaluation. Comprehensive Viva-Voce will be conducted with the help of external examiners in IV th semester. 5

9 Facilities Available 1. Teaching Faculty The department has qualified staff to teach the different courses prescribed in the syllabus. Existing faculty from the departments of Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering, Arts and Medicine of The M.S. University of Baroda are involved in teaching process. Experts from other universities of the country are also invited from time to time. Specialists from industries, environmental concerns and applied science related organizations, and environmental engineers are invited to deliver lectures. Experts from CPCB, ISRO, ONGC, and Forest Department Govt. of Gujarat provide required technical knowhow and also impart industrial training. 4 th Semester students are deputed to any industry / institute of repute to complete their 4 month industrial training.. Infrastructure Available Faculty of Science, The Maharaja Sayajirao University is already running an undergraduate Honours course in B.Sc. Environmental Science; some of the facilities are shared with the programme. Process of creating new infrastructure is started. Faculty of Science has enough space to accommodate aspirants of the new P.G. course in departments like Botany, Zoology and Chemistry. Computer lab (equipped with the GIS software), with sophisticated instruments like G.C., Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, UV(visible) Spectrophotometer & Research microscopes are available for the use of students. Latest books and research journals are available for reference work in the rich departmental library. Students can avail the facilities of Smt. Hansa Mehta Library on all working days. 3. Our Strength The Faculty of Science has produced a large number of Scientists and Academicians who are serving in various institutions in India and abroad in various capacities. Dr. Venkata Ramakrishnan was awarded Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 009. His parents had earlier served as faculty members in Dept. of Biochemistry and Food and Nutrition. Dr. KamaleshP.Lulla who did Ph. D. in Botany is associated with NASA, Dr. Sailesh Naik & Dr. J.R. Bhatt are associated with Govt. of India, New Delhi as Secretary Earth Sciences & Director Ministry of Environment respectively. Dr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman Knowledge Commission, GOI, Dr. M. Sanjappa, Ex- Director BSI, and Dr. C.S. Nautiyal, Director, NBRI are alumni of Faculty of Science. More than 16 major research projects related to environment and biodiversity are currently running in different departments. 9

10 Twenty two books and more than 00 research papers are published by Faculty members associated with the programme in last 10 years. Many of the Science Faculty departments have adequate facilities / modern instruments to assist the P.G. programme and undertake quality research in Environment related subjects. Activities of IAAPC, IEA and Baroda Chapters of ISCA, ISG and VigyanParishad provide a platform to students to the present their views/findings at national and international levels. Students help in solving problems of industries related to environment. 4. Highlights of the last Year Department organized National Seminar on Climate Change in the Indian context on 13 th December. Many of the students were selected as winners in various competitions like Treasure Hunt organized by SOCLEEN, Elocution competition by ISCA Baroda Chapter. Two students completed their Masters Dissertation work at FRI, Dehradun and NEERI, Nagpur. Many other students completed their training in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Ankleshwar. Students of B.Sc. and M. Sc. participated in Environmental Pollution monitoring exercise conducted by CPCB on the occasion of Deepawali. Students of B.Sc. bagged first and second prizes in National Symposium/ Jaldhara -14 held in V.V. Nagar. One M.Sc. student won the 1 st prize in Minaxi Lalit Award Test held in January, 014 at state level. 5. Extra-Curricular Activities The department organizes World Environment Day every year on 5 th June. In this occasiona seminar on Food security was organized. Students from various schools and university participated. Students participated in Open House and science exhibition organized by the ISCA Baroda Chapter and Faculty of Science on 7-8 th January. Collector Shri Vinod Rao, Inaugurated the exhibition. In each semester, the students are taken to visit several Industries to understand the working of their CETP s, Solid Waste Management Systems, and Environmental Management etc. One such trip was organized to Secured Engineered Landfill Facility at Jambua in Vadodara, to develop an extensive understanding of Solid Waste Management and the environmental aspects related to it. 10

11 Eligibility for Admission 1. A candidate must have passed B.Sc. Environmental Science, Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics, Geography, Geology or equivalent examination from any UGC recognized University. A candidate who has been in the subject mentioned in para a or in Bioscience, Life Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics or passed examination from any other examining body will have to produce eligibility certificate from M.S. University of Baroda along with the application for admission in the first year.. Reservation will apply as per university rule. Instructions to the Applicants 1. The Online Application Form are available from our website and on or before the prescribed date , Monday. The application fee is payable online or by the DD of INR 600/- payable to the Registrar, M.S. University of Baroda.. The receipt of the Online application need to be produced at the time of the admission process along with the original certificates. 3. Self-attested copies of the following certificates should be attached with the application form: H.S.C (1th Science) or equivalent Mark sheets B.Sc. or equivalent Mark sheets. Birth date certificate or School Leaving Certificate. 4. Provisional Eligibility Certificate (for applicants who have passed the qualifying examination other than of The M.S. University of Baroda) must be obtained by applying to the Registrar, M.S.University of Baroda, Vadodara Academic Section, Room No.310, nd Floor, University Office Building). 5. Certificate for SC/ST/SEBC/Physically Handicapped from competent authority should be attached, if applicable. SEBC applicants must submit latest Creamy layer certificate from the competent authority. No separate intimation regarding the entrance examination will be sent 8. All those who have applied and fulfill the minimum qualification should appear for the entrance examination. 9. Those who have appeared for qualifying examination and awaiting the result can also appear for the test and their admission will be considered, subject to passing the qualifying examination. Entrance Test Entrance test will be conducted on 1/06/014, Saturday at 11:00 a.m., to decide the admission to the course on merit basis. Admission list will be declared on 3 rd June, 014. The questions will be based on General Knowledge and Science (Environmental Science, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Human health, Microbiology, Biotech., Geology, Geography etc.). Question paper will have Hundred Objective type questions. Each question will be of one mark and there will be no negative marking. If marks of students are same in the Entrance test then the student having higher percentage in Chemistry at 1 th standard level will be considered. If marks are same in Chemistry marks in English will be considered for merit in admission process. GENERAL RULES GOVERNING THE CONDUCT OF STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY 1. A student must do nothing either inside or outside the university that will interfere with the university s orderly working and discipline. This comprehensive rule covers most cases that are likely to arise. It forbids, for instance: a) Impolite or unseeing behavior in classroom or University premises during teaching hours of the college and the Faculty. b) Attempt to persuade other students to abstain themselves from regular classes. c) Damage or Defacement of University furniture and property. 1

13 d) Disobedience of notifications or instructions issued by the Dean/ Heads of the Departments/ Coordinators and Members of the staff, duly authorized.. No society in any Faculty or college may be formed and no person may be invited to address any existing society or meeting without the previous permission of the Head of the Institution concerned. 3. As per UGC, regulation, 80% attendance is required for permitting students to appear for final examination. 4. Students are expected to behave with courtesy towards the members of the staff, their fellow colleagues and all visitors to the department/ Institution. 5. Use of Mobile phones is strictly prohibited within the classrooms and Lab.
