ZSI have allocated 5.14 PMs. TECN have allocated 12 PMs. Involving Manuel Perez and Jaime Gonzalez. UFCG have allocated 8 PMs. Five people were involved with the work, namely: Francisco Brasileiro, Nazareno Andrade, José Antônio Leal Farias, Adabriand Furtado and Guilherme Gadelha. UC have allocated 18,8 PMs. Seven people were involved within the work, namely: Rui Brito; Paulo Mota; Carlota Simões; Pedro Casaleiro; Maria Rita Portugal; Cândida Silva e António Monteiro. Please note that this include MUSC merged into UC Amendment procedure The amendment is complete. After the revision of the amendment, everything is ok, the only thing that the European commission requires us is a transfer from Museum of Coimbra to Unizar with the amount that Museum should reimburse (36.358,03 ). This amount represents the result of prefunding after Unizar will transfer to University of Coimbra (in the end ). Declaration of payments made to the MUS: This partner had an initial payment of ,80 (prefinancing) on January 2013 and another payment of ,23 on March 2014 so: , , cost in the project = ,03 is the amount that should be transfer to the UZ in order that UZ transfers it to UC Managing subcontractors We had some delays from our side when signing the subcontract agreement with UB and CERN. In addition, we are suffering now some delays with the reporting form UB (first event was a great success) and CERN is also having some issues with the antimatter images to analyze so they plan to go public by July. We are already late with the first subcontracted applications report (due February 2014 related with UB). We could be more useful if we report both applications together in July- September. The subcontracting process finalized on late february, so they started with their job latter than expected. 5/18

This meeting invited hackers, activists, designers, journalists, researchers, amateurs and citizens in general who aim to learn and exchange ideas on citizen science and take part in a hackfest where proposals by participants were developed. We provided technical support to some developers (e.g. odour control). Citizen Cyberscience Summit SOCIENTIZE sponsored the Citizen Cyberscience Summit 2014 ( organized by the interdisciplinary Extreme Citizen Science research group (ExCiteS) of University College of London (UCL), the Citizen Cyberlab, the Citizen Cyberscience Centre, and Mobile Collective. The consortium organized a series of activities throughout the summit: (i) announcement of the consultation process on the green paper on Citizen Science in Europe, (ii) presentation of the citizen science applications developed by Socientize in the summit track New frontiers in Citizen Cyberscience, (iii) organization of a workshop on policy recommendations to support Citizen Science in Europe, and (iv) participation on the hackday, providing technical support 8/18

9 to some developers (e.g. luminosity space pictures app). New frontiers in Citizen Cyberscience track Socientize set of participatory experiments. Roughly 20 people attended the presentation of four of the applications included in the SOCIENTIZE portfolio which cross multiple scientific domains ranging from molecular and cell biology and drug discovery (Cell Spotting), linguistics and semantics (Mind Paths), energy saving and sustainability and astronomy (Sun4All). Workshop on Policy Recommendations to support Citizen Science in Europe. This workshop opened formally the period of public consultation and community endorsement on the Green Paper on Citizen Science for Europe available online at This online portal was developed using cbased tool. The usage of the tool cbased was offered to us for free, so that the company owner of the tool could take our consultation process as a case study afterwards. Urban Bee 2.0 Workshop ( took place at the Hangar Centre for Art Research and Production, Barcelona, in March 26 and 27, The subcontracted application UrbanBees was publicly presented during event. Arduino Day Zaragoza The Arduino Day is a worldwide event bringing together Arduino people and projects, sharing theirs experiences! This year the Arduino Day took place on March 29, 2014 in dozens of cities worldwide. In Zaragoza, the Arduino Day ( took place at the Dlabs: Zaragoza Hackers Space. The activities developed included several Workshops, Show and Tell sessions, panel/discussion, and Demos. Francisco Sanz from Socientize co-organized this event representing the SOCIENTIZE consortium. The International Space Apps Challenge ( is an international mass collaboration focused on space exploration that takes place over 48-hours in 80 cities around the world. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space. This year we have 40 challenges and 25 projects from last year's Space Apps that support NASA's mission directorates in five themes: Earth Watch, Technology in Space, Human Spaceflight, Robotics and Asteroids. NASA is leading this global collaboration along with a number of government collaborators and 100+ local organizations. SOCIENTIZE sponsored the NASA Space apps challenge in Zaragoza (local web: from April 11-13, 2014 in the Etopia Building. We awarded the project OpenCuriosity "Follow your curiosity, open your mind" as the Best Citizen Science Project. OpenCuriosity is one of the 5 finalists of the global challenge. 5. 10 Sun4All UrbanBees Under development (work in progress) Antimatter mcgi (Pierpaolo Bruscolini BOINC) Collective Music Experiment (Sonar+D) 5.1. Urban Bees 2.0 Barcelona Workshop Overview Report. Further information will be found in the Subcontracted Applications Report to be delivered in D4.4. September Dates: 26 and 27 March The Workshop was held at Hangar, Centre for art research and production (C/ Carrer Emilia Coranty, 16, Barcelona). The aim of the Barcelona Urban Bees 2.0 workshop has been the construction of a beehive, equipped with low cost, high quality sensors that allow capturing different data (temperature, humidity, acceleration, sound, weight, and activity of the bees) The participation of the workshop was free and the profile of the people that were looked for were environmental scientists (bees and the environment), urban beekeepers, physicists of the science of complexity (data science), technologists and artists capable of working on electronics, open source and open data. The workshop was documented through video recording, interviews to the organizers and participants as well as pictures (Mar Morey). In the end of the project, a short video will be edited. A social scientist was also contracted in order to record the contributions made by the organizers and participants and to analyse the social dynamics that took place during the workshop. This report will be provided at the end of the project. Four self-organized groups were formed in order to build the sensorized beehives: Research Group Bee counters group The Hive Structure Group Sensor Programming Group At the end of the workshop, the different parts of the sensorized beehives were put together and the participants could visualize the data obtained in vivo. 10/18

11 Next Steps The workshop itself has its main goals but it only constitutes the first step of a more long-term project. The mid term activities, on-going and foreseen, are the following: Technological testing and optimization: The sensors-equipped beehives are presently calibrated and optimized, in order to come up with a stable equipment, able to provide 11/18

12 reliable data for a broad range of climatic conditions. The two students in electronics engineering and physics already involved in the workshop are responsible for this task. Experiment runs over free software available at GitHub. The software used will those compatible with Arduino components (sound, weight, temperature and eventually beecounter) and data representation will use open software coming from Data Science. The test phase is including various components: testing of the sensors reliability testing of the software testing of the data flow From May 15, the two beehives will be ready to be placed in an urban open door location and filled with bees colonies. Open-door installation and beekeeping. The first beehive will be placed in Barcelona Natural Museum terrace (Ciutadella Parc, Castell dels Tres Dragons) and filled with bee colonies. The colonies will be taken care by an experimented beekeeper, following the rules of ecologic beekeeping. The sensors will be regularly tested and cleaned if necessary. The participants of the workshop will be involved in this process. An collaboration agreement for long term vision will be signed with the Museum. Launching of activities associated with the beehives Web page and Open data platform. The web page is currently in construction (openbeeresearch.org) and the Open data platform will be built in collaboration with the Openbeelab project in Bordeaux. Scientific Research. In addition of the Open research provided by the possibility to export the data bases, in-house research will be performed. As perspectives are right now open, we would like to intent to follow a bottom-up approach, where the research topics are not only decided by experienced scientific researchers but also by other participants having some type of connection/knowledge related with the bees. Environmental education. The beehives will be used to explain / disseminate the life cycle of the bees, especially for publics that are not a priori interested by biological sciences. Artistic works. The monitored bees will be used as a source of inspiration or as data providers for artistic works. It will be explored the possibility of having a residence program. The first public activities related with the sensorized beehives will take place during the Science and Technology Festival, that will take place next 14th and 15th of June at the Barcelona Ciutadella Park. 12/18

13 5.2. Antimatter The project proposed by Michael Doser aims to measure the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. In order to do that, the scientific team behind this project needs volunteer participation to find impact points between matter and antimatter. This application, quite different from the previous one, targets the general public, and this allows us to bring closer the fundamental science to them. The Socientize and the Antimatter teams had a meeting last April. In this meeting we talked about the status of the projects and the next steps to be done. It's expected to have a prototype of the web at the beginning of June. The application will be officially launched between July and August. New photos will be uploaded in September, allowing a re-launch of the application. The prototype and the final version of the application will be implemented over mature and stable technologies, such as Python, HTML5, Javscript and PyBossa. Next steps To discuss with the existing programmer the changes that we need to make to obtain the required functionality, both towards the physicists and the general public and start on implementing these.this discussion will also include the communications manager, who will guide us on the interfaces, layout and communication aspects and the physicists, who have digitized the data, and need to prepare the data for the public. We have several different types of data sets, and want to start with the simplest one, where all is obviously visible, which consists of antiproton annihilations directly in the emulsions. Then we can follow up with a more complex topology, where only track fragments are visible (annihilation in a foil in front of the emulsion. Finally, we will provide data with other target materials (Ag, Au, Pb). Later in the year (September), we intend to acquire further data sets, with other target materials, thicker emulsions, much more statistics Collective Music Experiment One of the challenges we face in the information age is to understand the collective intelligence and the underlying mechanisms that occur when a big number of people engage and solve problems together. Analyze the behaviour of crowds performing creative tasks collectively is a breakthrough challenge as there are many complex issues involved and it is one of the future potential of the citizen science. Research on the use of crowds to perform complex creative work is difficult because of the nature of the tasks and the nature of the crowd.the work arguably requires a high degree of cognitive effort from each member of the crowd. At the same time, members of the crowd often lack expertise relevant to the task. Moreover, the crowd is physically distributed and is hard to organize and engage in dynamic interaction. Consequently, collective creativity is still in its early stages. 13/18

14 To foster this understanding, the EU-funded Socientize project will run the Collective Music Experiment at the Sónar+D with the Zaragoza-based artists R de Rumba, DJ from the Spanish famous hip hop band Violadores del Verso, and Miguel Angel Mercadal. This open research experiment will investigate and promote collective participation to obtain aggregated data on the emergent and unpredictable creativity through amateur participants. The experiment will be performed online in This website presents a traditional audio sequencer where users can generate music patterns. In addition, participants are able to see in real time the sequencers of their neighbours so that people can reuse best parts by selecting and incorporating them into their tunes. CME entail great uncertainty about the ability of the performer to find a solution in a given amount of time. It produces outputs that are new: the outputs are emergent. There are two ways new things can emerge. First, through discovery: crowd participants can find something not seen before. Second, through combination: integrating participant s work can produce something novel. CME scheme is the result of the non-routine task of musical composition. The output is unpredictable, a result of the open interactions with the restrictions of the musical samples and the network specifications enforced by system. DJ-Producer R de Rumba No musical background is needed. Collective creativity lays in the crowd generating and selecting ideas leading to emergent and unpredictable result of massive interactions. Following a short period of individual thoughtful inception, the best tunes will spread in the network evolving with time with the only restrictions coming from the musical concept and from the system specifications. After three days of accumulated phenomena from people with heterogeneous backgrounds, there will be a good number of mixes and interactions to analyze. The resulting tunes will be interpreted and performed live by the artists as part of Sónar+D which is the international conference for creativity and technology of the Sónar Festival, so everyone at home can be part of this international event. CME is not divide-and-conquer. CME is not map-reduce. CME is not hierarchical. It is latticenetwork-based mechanical statistics (predefined structure of neighbours) mixed with evolutionary algorithms (where selections and fitness are selected by the crowd). The crowd generate ideas AND the crowd select ideas. This experiment is getting extraordinary support from EC (e.g. ESOF2014 Stand will host it, ICTArt connect aims to replicate this experiment as part of Bozar.be festival in Sept. 2014). 14/18

15 Sónar+D 2014 CME is the first scientific experiment to be held within Sónar ever. Socientize selected Sónar for its transdisciplinary approach and excellent reputation, making easier to reach thousands of people from heterogeneous backgrounds. Some description about the Sónar festival and its subsection Sónar+D: Sónar is the International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art taking place in Barcelona during three days every June. Created in 1994, Sónar is a pioneering festival with a unique format and content. It's first class reputation as a leading reference for international festivals is by virtue of a carefully balanced cultural offering, combining a playful nature, the avant-garde, and experimentation with electronic dance music's newest trends. Sónar+D is the international conference for creativity and technology, designed to promote talent and business opportunities in the digital culture environment. Sónar+D is held in Barcelona together with Sónar by Day at the Palau de Congressos in Fira Montjuïc. It brings together experts from around the world (technologists, entrepreneurs, artists, companies and researchers) to present and transmit initiatives and tools that will help to shape future creative experiences in the areas of music, image, interactive content, and transmedia platforms. Sónar+D is a meeting point with interdisciplinary and cross sector focus, targeting professionals from the creative, technological and cultural industries, following their interaction, knowledge sharing, debate and discussion, showcasing talent and generating new business. Sónar+D organically integrates to Sónar, and contributes in positioning the festival as an active catalyst in the creative technologies sector, far beyond its natural habitat of music and new media. Sónar+D 2013 Facts & figures accredited professionals, 57 countries, Spanish, internationals, companies, 46,94% music, 22,24% technology, 16,18% marketing and design,71% media, 5,93% institutions and universities Media at Sónar, journalists, 453 internationals, 659 nationals, 489 media from 48 countries, news. The media coverage reached an audience of more than 275 millions, valued in over Shared Experiences, 216 networking sessions with 24 experts, 15 Apps presented at the AppCafé Live Experimentation,100 hackers and 24 participating companies at the 24h Music Hack Day, 145 participants at 11 workshops for the Maker community, 27 tech shows Ideas Debate,959 participants throughout 11 conferences 6. WP5 Evaluation and policy recommendations 6.1. White Paper online consultation Online consultation is still active in whitepaper.socientize.eu, but officially the discussion period 15/18

16 ended with 95 participants to the survey and some interesting discussions on the online portal. From the 95 participants, 44 respondents provided their own recommendation to the EC. Whitepaper.socientize.eu using c-based technologies for online discussions We are now elaborating the structure of our white paper and analysing all the feedback we received. We observed two main trends we: The ones who want to professionalise the organisation, measurement, effectiveness etc. of the rather traditional way of seeing CS. They are suggesting funding on different levels (Local, national, EU, international) and longer-term for maintenance to keep alreadyestablished networks The others who want to avoid too much professionalisation, to leave room for future developments of CS and make it more attractive for grass-root movements. No bureaucracy, funding to grass root movements, single persons (and not only institutions) as beneficiaries of funding streams... 16/18
