Nevada Transition to Common Core 2010 Nevada adopts the Common Core State Standards 2011 Nevada becomes a governing state of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium 2011 Nevada creates the Common Core Steering Committee to oversee the transition of the NVCCS and associated tasks the state item pool for mathematics and ELA are doubled coded and field test items are designed to be integrated (up to 15%) into the state assessment in grades Nevada applies for and receives an accountability waiver Field test items designed in become operational.
Nevada Transition to Common Core The Nevada Department of Education (NDE), in collaboration with Nevada educators, developed a timeline for a systemic transition to the Nevada Common Core Standards (NVCCS). It is worth noting that NVCCS includes English Language Arts and Mathematics grades K-12 solely, however, attention is being focused on other content areas such as Science and Social Studies. Nevada s Academic Content Standards (NVACS) encompass these four content areas as well as health, PE, and Fine Arts to name a few. The Nevada Common Core Steering Committee (CCSC) was formed to oversee the transition of the Nevada Common Core Standards (NVCCS) and associated tasks. The Committee is comprised of personnel from the NDE, Office of the Governor, Nevada school districts, State Charter Authority, Regional Professional Development Programs (RPDP s), Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), the Blue Ribbon Task Force and the Nevada State Education Association. The following work teams are or have become part of the Steering Committee responsibilities.
Statewide Collaboration Communication Work Team: disseminate information associated with the transition to NVCCS and Nevada professional development documents (on-going). Gap Analysis Work Teams: determine the alignment and/or gaps between Nevada content standards and the Common Core State Standards (completed, 2011) Translation Work Teams: create user-friendly documents to guide curriculum, instruction and assessment. (completed, 2011) Professional Development Work Teams: create resource materials and opportunities for teachers and stakeholders aligned to NVCCS (on-going) Nevada Implementation Planning Work Team: newly formed to outline and align the transition of the NVCCS, teacher & administrator evaluation, and the Nevada School Performance Framework. NV-ART newly formed workgroup to ensure that Nevada is ready for the next generation of assessments.
Statewide Collaboration In the summer of 2013 the CCSC will be repurposed and repopulated, by executive order, to ensure that Nevada is preparing students who are ready to enter college and/or the workforce successfully. The CCSC will be co-chaired by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education allowing for aligned communication and planning to occur and be reported from a Pre-K 16 perspectives. The Superintendent and Chancellor will have on-going communications with the Governor, legislators, and the community at large.
NDE Website Resources that have and will support teachers and administrators in the transition to the NCSS and associated tasks. Examples: Initial awareness of the adoption of the standards, and changes to curriculum and assessment Access to resources that enhance knowledge of instructional changes, and Opportunities for personal expansion of knowledge that will aid instruction and understanding of the NVCCS. Technical Assistance and information, provided by the NDE for all stakeholders is ongoing and includes: Implementation Plan for Nevada moving forward Information and updates on Smarter Balanced technology requirements Information and updates on Smarter Balanced content specification, test design, practice items and test administration
Grades 3-8 Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) in mathematics included some live NVCCS items that count toward a student s score. Field test items from the CRTs for grades 3-8 were released by the NDE to aid in the transition of instruction and assessment of the NVCCS. Instructional materials for grades 3-8 were aligned to NVCC and the Smarter Balanced test design. Fifth and Eighth Grade Writing Exams transition to formative assessment tools that align to the Smarter Balanced rubrics. Smarter Balanced creates a balanced assessment design that includes formative tools, interim and summative assessments. The interim and summative assessments are computer adaptive and include technology based performance tasks. Smarter Balanced releases practice items and states engage in a scientific pilot assessment.
Grade 3-8 CRTs in mathematics and reading include some live NVCCS items that count toward a student s score. Field test items from the HSPE will be released by the NDE to aid in the transition of instruction and assessment of the NVCCS. Instructional materials for high school will align to NVCC and the Smarter Balanced test design. Nevada educators have access to a variety of resource materials and opportunities provided by Smarter Balanced (i.e. benchmarking, content review, and achievement level descriptor development, scoring and reporting workgroups). Field-testing of the Smarter Balanced assessments in grades 3-8 and 11 for the purpose of reliability.
Smarter Balanced assessments will be administered in grades 3-8 for purpose of school accountability/growth. Students in grade 11 will be engaged in a college and career readiness assessment.
