The goal is to develop the capacity for action within the framework of a given mandate in a company. Students will then be lead to perfect their competences in analysis and synthesis, as well as their skills of collaboration with their fellow students in an organisational project. Specific Objectives After completing this course, students will be able to: 1) Perform a strategic diagnosis based on: 1. a serious examination of a problem or a question to be treated in relation with current strategy or the strategy wished for by management; 2. the preparation of all the necessary information for orientating research of solutions with the : Course Outline Fall

2 i. identification of the stakes and highlighting the opportunities and the threats of the sector of activity of the given organisation; ii. identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation; iii. presentation of the differences between the current strategy and the hazards of the environment. 2) Develop realistic future plans: 1. recommend likely plans to be put in place in the field in function of the analysis performed; 2. supply the criteria to follow-up on the applied recommendations. Pedagogical Approach This course will be based on work done by teams of two or three students. In order to develop the above mentioned competencies, the students will be involved in a concrete manner in an organisation, working on a clear and precise mandate 1 that will be given by management. There is a certain amount of flexibility in regards to the types of mandates that can be done. Above all the mandate must be strategically pertinent for the organisation (for example, the development of a new product, new markets, search for rare resources, and adoption of a new technology). Before the choice of organisation or the consulting project has been finalised, the following elements must be considered: find a company with at least thirty employees in which all traditional functions are represented (Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing ); have access to financial statements 2, have the agreement and support of management to have access to all the information necessary to accomplish a project of high quality. Final Report and Presentation The projects will be presented orally at the end of the program. The use of electronic slides is compulsory. The written document will be approximately 30 pages, excluding appendixes, according to the number of people in the team. The final report will be given to the instructor before the presentation. In addition to the paper version of the report, a CD copy will be necessary. 1 The mandate must be approved by the instructor. 2 A confidentiality agreement will be signed, if necessary, by the instructor and the students in order to ensure that all data from the company remain confidential, and that the data will not be published without the express permission of management. 3 Class Schedule The class will meet at its regular time each week. For the first four weeks, there will be a general review of strategic management. The course will then consist of weekly meetings between the different teams and the instructor during class time. Presentations will take place during the last two weeks of the semester and will be at the time and place agreed upon by the students, teacher, and client (company). Evaluation - Chapter presentation 10% - In the news presentation 10% - In-class participation 10% - Project report 40% - Project Presentation 10% - Team work: individual effort 20% The project report will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1) 50% - the depth of the analysis on which the text is structured, the coherence of the propositions and the justification of the statements given 2) 30% - the quality of the recommendations and their realism 3) 20% - the quality of the written word which is demonstrated by the clarity of the text, the correct use of vocabulary, spelling and grammar. 4 Evaluation by fellow students Individual effort, to be evaluated by the other team members, will also be considered during the giving of the final marks. During the third class an informal evaluation of the work of each team member will be done by the other team members (that is to say this evaluation will not count in the calculation of the final grade). Before the deposit of the final report, a second identical evaluation will be done. This last will be formal, and will count for 20% of the final grade and will be dated and signed by the person evaluated.
