This course provides a multidimensional view of public health policy and services. Through interactive discussion of assigned readings, team-based learning, and supplementary lecture, students will learn about the nature of and development of policy, public health policy, and financing and delivery of health care services. Concepts such as unintended consequences, association versus causation, evidencebased information, and the challenges of deconstructing available data, will be discussed throughout the course with the purpose of strengthening student abilities to analyze and challenge assumptions. 3 Examination of the politics of the health policy process, including the effects of American political structure and institutions; economic and social factors; interest groups, classes, and social movements; media and public opinion, and other factors. This introductory level course will focus on management accounting in health care and provide the student with basic analytical and practice oriented cost accounting concepts and problems. More advanced issues in the interface of accounting and health care policies will be discussed using articles and cases. The goal of the course is for the student to understand general and specific issues in the discipline of financial and management accounting. At the end of the course, the student will be able to describe and analyze key cost concepts related to decision-making and reporting and will be able to reflect on potential challenges with the use of management accounting tools in the specific setting of health care organizations. An understanding of strategic management and marketing is provided which enables the students to lead the process of strategic planning in a healthcare organization. By conducting a marketing and strategic planning process, health care organizations are better able to cope with dramatic changes in technological, social, political, regulatory, and competitive aspects of the health care market. Strategic management enables organizations to identify issues unique to them, which hinder or promote organizational success. Through course readings, class discussions, analyses of secondary quantitative and qualitative data, and presentation of case studies, students gain a thorough understanding of the strategic management process. Students will apply core competencies through a comprehensive strategic and marketing plan. Plans will be defended through an oral presentation.
