3 Program Information The Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) with a concentration in Nurse Executive Organizational Leadership (NEOL) degree prepares nurse leaders to assume the highest levels of leadership in education, scholarship and service with an emphasis on advanced leadership knowledge, skills and attitudes; organizational systems leadership for health care delivery systems, quality and risk management; health care policy; and information systems/technology to improve patient care outcomes and transform health care. The NEOL DNP expertise is grounded in the scholarship of application. The College recognizes a state and national need to prepare nurse executives for leadership roles by providing a DNP degree that is focused on unique learning experiences integrated into a curriculum that weaves the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' (AACN) DNP Essentials and the CONs Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) with the 14 Forces of Magnetism from the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Recognition Program and the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows principles. In addition, we have a focus on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and new the financial, quality, outcomes, and regulatory requirements required of today s Nurse Executives and Clinicians. Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice IV. Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care V. Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care VI.Inter-professional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes VII.Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice VIII.Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care 2 P a g e

10 FAQs Regarding the DNP NEOL Program What is the DNP? The DNP is the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. It is considered entry into advanced practice by the AACN and is a nursing practice-focused doctoral degree. The UNM CON is currently only offering the Post Masters option for the Nurse Executive Organization Leadership (NEOL) concentration. However, we will also offer the clinical DNP at the same time as the NEOL; with both starting May, Why do I need a DNP? Currently, the AACN (2006) is still grandfathering in MSNs in both indirect care (Nurse Executive Organizational Leadership, Informatics, Health Policy, etc. along with MSNs with a clinical concentration such as FNP, PNP, Certified Nurse Midwife, Adult-Gero ACNP, CRNA, etc. You currently do not need a DNP to practice if you are a board certified advanced practice registered nurse and keep your certification current. However, the (AACN) has recommended that by 2015, the DNP be the education preparation for entry into advanced practice by all advanced practice nurses. When is the application deadline for the program and when is a new cohort admitted? The application process opens on July 30, 2015 and there is a rolling admissions cycle with the final deadline being April 30, 2016 for the NEOL DNP cohort being admitted in May The application cycle is the same each year with each subsequent new cohort beginning in May with Residency Week. Does the Post Masters DNP offer different tracts? The UNM CON currently offers only the NEOL post masters DNP. In summer 2016 we will offer the post-masters clinical DNP as stated above. How long is the program and is there a set curriculum and project required? The doctoral programs (DNP & PhD) are offered on the UNM semester schedule. The DNP program is a total of six semesters beginning in the summer. The curriculum is sequential and can be found in the DNP Student Handbook The DNP Student Handbook is revised for each academic year so you will fall under the Handbook which is published by December of the year ending. 9 P a g e
11 What is a capstone project? The DNP capstone project must exemplify scholarly activity. It is a culminating project showing practice excellence and demonstrating leadership to transform health care, demonstrates knowledge of population health, evidence-based practice, scientific inquiry, informatics, health policy, and the integration of the DNP role in an interprofessional team in an academic, health policy or health care environment. The capstone is a practice-oriented research project that meets the needs of the DNP s community of interest. The Capstone project is a not a dissertation which generates new knowledge. Rather the Capstone takes knowledge, skills, and attitudes and transforms care at the bedside, uses informatics to improve patient outcomes with a focus on health disparities, etc. (See pp.2 in the General Recruitment information for the NEOL DNP for a list of graduated and 2 nd -year NEOL DNP s Capstone Projects. Is the program completely online? What campus events are required of applicants/students? The DNP NEOL didactic program is completely online with both synchronous and asynchronous learning utilized. Students are only required to come to campus for Residency Week during each summer semester of the program for orientation, ongoing support for curriculum completion and capstone project. The CON reserves the right to negotiate with students to hold parts of class s on-the-ground, i.e. a Saturday or weekday evening if both faculty and student s agree to the schedule. Clinical practice hours for your residency may be obtained in your home location. Applicants are invited to campus for interviews but are not required to attend on campus as interviews will be offered via telephone, Zoom, or Skype. Can I continue my full-time job while in the program? Yes. The two-year program is designed for students to remain in their current positions. The time commitment for the program varies by term and year, but the highest number of credits will be six-seven in any one semester with the exception of your final two semesters which may be as low as three-five credits depending on the number of hours you need to complete to be eligible for graduation. How do I assure I have enough credits and practice hours to graduate? Our program is credit hours. In addition, the AACN requires that 1,000 practice hours are earned within these credits for the DNP degree. Our program of studies provides a baseline of practice hours. The remaining practice hours are most commonly earned through coursework already taken that meets practice requirements, an independent study, or additional Capstone or Residency hours. A thorough review of your academic credits will be done by the admission committee to determine your specific hours awarded and still needed (see pp. 23 of the DNP Student Handbook for the DNP NEOL Program of Studies found at 10 P a g e
12 What technology requirements are needed? A high-speed internet connection is essential. Students accepted into the program are required to have a computer, printer, web camera, internet access, Microsoft Office and the capability for downloading videos. In addition, students are required to be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel (if you use an Apple product with Safari, you will be required to save and post your work in MS Word), and post it in Blackboard Learn (you will get a tutorial and practice during residency week). Specific classes may require additional information technology and programs. What can I do if I am not proficient in excel? Included in your studentship at UNM is free access to software tutorials by Lynda. Go to sign in with your UNM NetID, and search for the desired version of Excel for in-depth tutorials. What is the cost? Information about the cost of both in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees can be found online at the Bursar's website: please note that there is an additional Nursing Tuition Differential for nursing students that can be found just under the Tuition and Fee Schedule. In addition to these costs, please estimate $500 per semester in additional course fees, HSC Library Fee, Needle stick Insurance Fee and one-time fingerprinting and drug screening. If you have any question, please contact the College of Nursing's Financial Aid Officer, Ana Vigil, amvigil@salud.unm.edu or (505) Is student aid available? Please review the following UNM College of Nursing website for resources and more detail of financial assistance: In summary, there are various resources: Federal Student Financial Aid such as student loans is the most common form of assistance, National Health Service Corp., State resources such as the New Mexico Health Service corp., UNM Office of Graduate Studies Funding Resources and I recommend that students also complete the College of Nursing Scholarship Application upon admission to the College of Nursing. Please contact Ana Vigil, program coordinator if you have any questions at amvigil@salud.unm.edu or (505) We have yet to see Ana unable to help student s find money in some manner or other. She is exceptional, so please contact her as early as possible to explore opportunities. 11 P a g e
