2 LIU Hudson, located on the grounds of Purchase College, is offering graduate programs, advisement, special scholarships and convenient scheduling to meet the professional and practical needs of members of the Purchase College Community. This Advising Manual includes information about: Accelerated Graduate Degree Completion Programs The Purchase Community Scholarship LIU Hudson Programs: Teacher Education Business Administration (M.B.A.) School Psychology School Counseling Mental Health Counseling Marriage and Family Therapy Health and Public Administration (M.P.A.)* Long Term Care Administration* Educational Leadership* Pharmaceutics* LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY LIU Hudson 735 Anderson Hill Road Purchase, NY (Dance Building) liu.edu/hudson *Offered at LIU Hudson at Rockland
3 Accelerated Graduate Degree Programs Collaboration with LIU Hudson has made it possible for qualified Purchase College students to accelerate their attainment of an M.B.A. or M.S.Ed. by allowing them to begin earning credits toward these degrees at the same time they are completing their undergraduate work. LIU Hudson is offering Purchase College students two accelerated degree programs that fit well with any undergraduate major: Early-admit M.B.A. First-step Teacher Education Students admitted into the accelerated degree programs may take two graduate courses (six credits), which are applied toward both their baccalaureate and their master s degree, thereby shortening the time needed to complete the graduate degree and reducing the cost. For guidance on either of these programs, students should review information within this Advising Manual and consult with their Purchase College advisers. Contact the LIU Hudson program directors listed under each of the programs, or for general information at or westchester@liu.edu. Early-admit M.B.A. Program Purchase College students, in any major, may pursue a Master in Business Administration (M.B.A.) while completing their Purchase College baccalaureate. The courses count toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Eligible Purchase College students should apply to the M.B.A. program, preferably at the end of the junior year, but no later than the end of the Fall semester of the senior year. Students admitted to this program will be allowed to take one or two courses (maximum of six credits) toward their M.B.A. Since the courses count toward students undergraduate degrees, they also appear on the students Purchase College transcripts. These six credits may be taken in any of the seven general business core courses listed below. The most appropriate courses are determined through discussion between the student and the program director/adviser: LIU Hudson courses: Appear on Purchase College Transcript as: 1. GBA 510 Financial Accounting ECO GBA 511 Corporate Financial Management ECO GBA 512 Principles of Management & Leadership ECO MBA 632 Marketing Management and Strategy (formerly GBA513) ECO GBA 515 Managerial Communications ECO GBA 516 Business Statistics ECO GBA 517 Fundamentals of Management Information Systems ECO 4807 Any of the 500-level courses may be waived with LIU Hudson permission, if the student has taken two undergraduate credit courses in the same subject area and received a grade of B or better in both courses.
4 Application Requirements 1. Successful completion of the Purchase College writing proficiency requirement and attainment of an overall GPA of Submission of a satisfactory personal statement outlining the student s professional goals and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in business administration. 3. Submission of two strong professional recommendations: a. One recommendation from an instructor in business or economics, or from an adviser in the student s major at Purchase College. b. One recommendation from a second faculty member or an employer. 4. Successful completion of an advising/interview session with the M.B.A. program director at LIU Hudson. Tuition For Early-admit M.B.A. students, LIU Hudson tuition is discounted by 50 percent of the rate effective at the time the courses are taken. The courses will be counted toward both the total number of credits required for the M.B.A. and the Purchase College baccalaureate degree. Following graduation from Purchase College and full matriculation into the M.B.A. program, the 25 percent discount available to Purchase College graduates applies to all subsequent courses. Upon graduation from Purchase College and matriculation into the M.B.A. program, the six graduate credits will appear on both the student s Purchase College transcript and the LIU Hudson graduate transcript. At this point, students will officially become LIU Hudson graduate students and are expected to follow all LIU Hudson academic requirements and policies. The M.B.A. degree, which is designed for working adults, may be completed in a 24-month period even if students are employed full-time. Students attend classes one night per week and alternate Saturday mornings. Contact For details on eligibility, schedules, registration and other matters, please contact the Business, Public and Health Administration Program Director: Dr. Kevin R. Nash kevin.nash@liu.edu
5 First-Step Teacher Education Program Purchase College students, in any major, who are interested in teaching careers, may pursue an M.S.Ed. while completing their Purchase College degrees. The courses count toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees, providing both time and financial savings. Purchase College students usually apply to the First-Step Teacher Education program in their junior year. Students who are admitted to the program will be allowed to take up to two courses (6 credits) toward their graduate education programs before completing their Purchase baccalaureate programs. Typically, the six graduate credits would include two of the LIU Hudson Tier I courses required for the pre-service M.S.Ed. such as: TED 510: Introduction to Students with Disabilities and TED 515: Multicultural Perspectives in Education. Recommended Advisement It is essential for students to consult with both their Purchase College adviser and one of the LIU Hudson teacher education program directors in order to ensure inclusion in their undergraduate study plans of the requisite subject area courses for initial teacher certification. The LIU program directors will gladly advise students of the undergraduate liberal arts coursework that is required by New York State, in accordance with LIU Hudson s state-approved teacher education programs. Application Requirements Purchase College students will be eligible to apply for the LIU Hudson First-Step Teacher Education program after achieving the following: 1. Successful completion of SOC 3203 Introduction to Teaching with a minimum grade of B+. 2. Two strong professional recommendations, one from the Introduction to Teaching instructor and a second recommendation from another Purchase College faculty member. 3. Successful completion of the Purchase College writing proficiency requirement and submission of a satisfactory essay outlining the student s professional goals as a teacher. 4. An overall GPA of 3.0 in academic subject courses at the time of application to the First-step Program. 5.
