We had a visiting prof last year who could do it for semesters, but there isn t anyone else now. It sounds great to have the voice students study the languages themselves. I ve had a few of them in my courses over the years; they are very motivated students. We will support the inclusion of language courses on the Music Department s APC proposals. Pat Geesey LLC From: Hines, Clarence Sent: Monday, March 0, 04 : PM To: Geesey, Patricia Subject: Re: APC Package has received a comment Hello Pat, After talking with the voice faculty, we have decided that the courses listed in our Master of Music degree proposal (French II, German II, and Italian II) should be replaced with courses that are offered by your department. The basic idea is that graduate students should have already taken two beginning foreign language courses in their undergraduate degree. They would need to take an additional beginning course for the M.M. Music Performance: Voice Degree. I am modifying our APC request to include the following language courses in the program of study. Do you offer Italian? I didn t notice Italian in the catalog. Select one Beginning Language course FRE 0 Beginning French I (4 cr.) FRE Beginning French II (4 cr.) GER 0 Beginning German I (4 cr.) You can simply reply to this and state your approval or concerns regarding these courses. This communication can be uploaded to the APC workflow. I am copying the voice area in this communication. Krzysztof Biernacki and Cara Tasher can provide you with more information if needed. Here are the courses in question. French II French II is especially designed for singers to improve their linguistic abilities as required by the singing profession. Special attention is paid to proper pronunciation and fluency in reading the French language. This course is one of three (French II, German II, or Italian II) language diction courses required for completion of the MM degree in in Voice Performance. This course consists of two one-hour classes per week. Learning will be assessed each week according to assigned homework, proficiency tests, and vocabulary quizzes. Each semester will culminate with a final exam graded by the supervising faculty.
