Middle School & High School Guide School Year

Welcome to the Sheboygan Area School District One of the strengths of the Sheboygan Area School District is the variety of opportunities and choices offered to families, especially when it comes to school choice. Every student is guaranteed enrollment in their neighborhood school, which is determined by the student s home address. Families also have the opportunity to request to attend a different school in the district. The Sheboygan Area School District will accept school choice requests for the following year during the application period of December 1 February 15. Parents/Guardians must fill out the Intradistrict Transfer Request Form available at all school offices, at the SASD Administration Building at 830 Virginia Avenue and also on our website at: under Enroll. If more applications are received than space available, a random lottery selection will determine acceptance. To determine which neighborhood schools serve a home address, use the SASD School Locator tool at:

Farnsworth Middle School 1017 Union Avenue, Sheboygan, WI Grades: 6-8 (920) Current enrollment: 557 For decades, Farnsworth Middle School has been a diverse community. This tradition continues today as students attend Farnsworth from a multitude of backgrounds (economically and socially) to form a melting pot where their differences become their strengths. Farnsworth is committed to teaching to the whole child. Academically, math and reading form the base which all other disciplines build upon. Students are provided a significant amount of time to learn these important skills and extra time is built into the day for those that need additional support or enrichment. On a weekly basis, Farnsworth provides instruction specifically focused on teaching good character traits and positive behavior through the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system which includes: Respect, Responsibility, Safety, and Productivity. Technology plays a huge role in student life. At Farnsworth, students have access to four state of the art computer labs including a lab that is available for student use before and after school. SmartBoards, Elmos, and other electronic devices are used on a consistent basis. Wireless internet throughout the building allows for successful use of a variety of learning tools. All students at Farnsworth are assigned a chromebook for daily home and school use and they will continue to have one-on-one devices throughout their middle school career. In addition to the regular school day, students are provided a variety of activities to support their growth and development as young citizens. The activities change regularly based on student interest and need. The activities center around three areas Academics, Sports, and Leadership - and are all provided free to interested students. Some examples include the Lakeland College Math Meet, chess club, international club, cheerleading, soccer, archery, student council, and basketball. Five student activity nights are sponsored throughout the year by an extremely active Student Council. Student Council also takes part in Salvation Army red kettle drive as community service/charity work. 7:40 a.m. 3:00 p.m. 7:40 a.m. 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday 1

George D. Warriner Middle School 712 Riverfront Drive, Suite 101, Sheboygan, WI Grades: 6-8 (920) Current Enrollment: 67 Warriner Middle School offers a unique learning environment with small class sizes and a personalized approach to education. Our goal is to make learning meaningful and fun, engaging and motivating students to become enthusiastic life-long learners. Warriner helps students develop the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in high school, college, and beyond. Staff members work closely with families to tailor a learning plan that fits the unique needs of the individual learner. Our difference is the belief that a small school environment emphasizes collaboration and respect for all, allowing students to master rigorous curriculum - free of distraction. Warriner Middle School offers three different scheduling options for students: full day, half-day, and online. The school s unique flexible scheduling allows parents to work closely with staff to ensure the student s personalized learning plan is challenging and rewarding. The school is fortunate to have access to courses from a number of the finest online providers available. Warriner students use a supplied Chromebook computer that promotes learning anywhere and anytime. Approximately 85% of the student body chooses to attend full days. This schedule allows students to experience an innovative and effective educational model within a more traditional classroom setting. Students learn in a teacher-led atmosphere where small class sizes and differentiated instruction allow all students to grow. A typical Warriner Middle School student has a schedule that includes math and reading hybrid courses that target each student s needs. Social studies, science, and literature circles are taught by teachers who design curriculum to promote hands-on learning, resulting in high student engagement. Students also participate in project-based learning and guidance. The result of this curriculum is a student who is strong in the core content areas of math, science, reading, and social studies. Our unique approach to learning also ensures high school and college success by developing creativity, innovation, and problem solving through high level research, writing, and presentation projects. The staff at Warriner Middle School is dedicated to promoting a safe, educational and fun environment for all learners. It is our mission to ensure that all students achieve growth academically, socially and in the area of career and college readiness. Through a gradual release of responsibilities, our students develop the independence they will need for future growth and success. Beyond the school day, students are invited to participate in an after school program that offers them a variety of experiences to enrich their learning while having fun. 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. 8:00 am - 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday 2

Horace Mann Middle School 2820 Union Avenue, Sheboygan, WI Grades: 6-8 (920) Current enrollment: 583 The Horace Mann Middle School campus is situated on 43 acres of beautiful green space. Within the school, one of our goals is to expand students horizons by welcoming them into an environment that will help them learn, grow and succeed. In addition to core academic courses like math, science, language arts and social studies, students participate in a variety of allied arts classes, including music, physical education, art, technology education, family and consumer education, world languages, and business education. These allied arts classes expose students to new concepts, skills and experiences, while providing students choices in their education. In addition to the rigorous activities of the school day, students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents through a variety of extra-curricular sports ranging from the more common sports like flag football, basketball, soccer, and softball to those that are less traditional for a school setting, such as bowling, ping pong, golf and badminton. Students may also participate in after school activities like Archiver s Club, Book Club, Show Choir, and Talent Show. One bonus to attending Horace Mann, whether an actor or an audience member, is an opportunity to experience the inner workings of live productions first-hand. Typically over 100 students participate in our annual musical, held in the Leslie W. Johnson Theater, which is also home to the Sheboygan Theater Company. All Horace Mann Middle School students belong to a team, which makes a large school feel smaller and helps students get to know their teachers and each other more quickly. Students also have an opportunity to connect with others during Advisory time, discussing topics related to school expectations, working together and just getting to know each other and having fun. Finding a place where students belong is a big part of our school. At the heart of the students feeling connected to school is a quality, caring staff. Over 67% of Horace Mann teachers hold a Master s degree or higher. Each of them has a passion to bring the best student experience to the students and their families. Frequently, staff, students, and families work together to support less fortunate families in our school community and around the world. It is inspirational! The Horace Mann site-based management team is a partnership between staff, students and parents to oversee the general school functioning and family-focused activities, such as the Fall Open House and Family Fun Night. To prepare students for the 21st century, students utilize one-to-one devices throughout their middle school career. In addition, Horace Mann boasts SmartBoards in each academic classroom to enhance the interactive learning environment. 7:40 a.m. 3:00 p.m. 7:40 a.m. 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday 3

The Mosaic School 830 Virginia Avenue, Sheboygan, WI Grades: 6-8 (920) Current enrollment: 96 The Mosaic School exists to create a learning environment that teaches to and celebrates the multiple intelligences of each student. Utilizing the individual strengths and learning interests of all students, Mosaic promotes a diverse community built around a culture of decency and trust. Through project based learning, students will enter high school with a foundation of academic and real-life skills specifically crafted to meet the challenges of a world that requires critical and innovative thinking. Mosaic students work in a school community that applies their knowledge through hands-on learning every day. Students engage in learning through collaborative projects that require them to apply content in innovative ways. Through this process, students make decisions that cause them to reflect on and revise their work. In addition to the core curriculum, students are asked to apply Habits of Professionalism and Habits of Mind throughout the entire educational program. These skills help students to become independent, self-directed learners who are prepared for high school. Projects are used as a primary means for students to apply what they are learning in a way that integrates with Habits of Professionalism and Habits of Mind. Advisory serves as the home base for students in middle school. Each advisor has students and provides weekly academic advisement, future planning, and community building. Advisory also serves as the place for students to problem solve and discuss their school community through Town Halls and the school s Think Tank which includes representatives from every advisory. Seminars provide Mosaic students the opportunity to try arts and engineering classes including, dance/movement, drama, music, visual arts, creative writing, and design/engineering in a way that holds true to the hands-on learning approach. Students create in each of these classes and present their work, continually building their Habits of Professionalism and Habits of Mind. Presentations of Learning are a unique way Mosaic students present and reflect on their learning for each grading term. At the end of each term, students prepare a portfolio and present it to their advisor and parents showcasing their learning including core content, Habits of Professionalism and Habits of Mind. An After School Program builds upon learning during the day and includes Forensics, Future City (a city design competition), Drama Production Club, Lego League, International Club, Book Club, and many others. The school s educational program is guided by cutting edge research from Center for Responsive Schools and Harvard University s Project Zero. Through this research teachers provide Mosaic students with an exceptional environment for learning. 8:05 a.m. - 3:10 p.m. 8:05 a.m. - 2:12 p.m. on Wednesday 4
