3 Red and Blue Zones
4 Red Zone The Red Zone is where we have confirmed active termites on 13 of the 23 properties located in the block Since termites are close to the 10 properties that are not showing signs of termites we feel our efforts should be focused on the entire block, in hopes of controlling the spread of termites
5 Red Zone Council has approved a Pilot Termite Program that provides in kind funding by providing some treatment of these 23 properties such as Borate treatment of existing sheds Borate Rod treatment of wooden posts Application of Nematodes (spring and fall)
6 Red and Blue Zone As directed by Council, the Red and Blue zones are to be informed via a Public Education Program about termites and preventative measures home owner can take, this takes the form of our Termite Tips & Facts sheet included in your envelope
7 Red and Blue Zones Both the Red and Blue zones will be part of the Monitoring program which includes the installation of monitoring traps Red Zones 23 Properties (8 traps per property) Blue Zones 96 Properties (3 traps per property)
8 Red and Blue Zones Both zones will benefit from our 2015 Spring and Fall Yard Cleanup weekends Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31 Friday September 18 to Sunday September 20
9 Updated By-Law Chapter 689, Termite-Wood- Destroying Insect-Control was updated and approved by Council December 15, 2014 and is now known as Termite Prevention and Control By-Law
10 Updated By-Law Key changes included General update of terms & definitions Powers of entry around inspection and placing of traps Owners obligations Removal of reference to out dated grants & loans Updating of Offences City s authority to do work and add to taxes
11 When you find Termites Every owner shall ensure that buildings and structures are adequately protected by taking the following measures within the Termite Control Area (Red Zone); Treatment of soil Removing any infested material Do not remove without approval, unless going to landfill Repairing any building or structure
12 When you find Termites Every owner shall ensure that buildings and structures are adequately protected by taking the following measures within the Termite Prevention Area (Blue Zone); Removing any infested material Do not remove without approval, unless going to landfill
13 Building Permits The Building Code under Termite and Decay Protection address construction in locations where termites are known to occur, some things to keep in mind;
14 Building Permits Clearance between structural wood elements and finished ground level shall be not less than 450mm (1-6 ) OR shall be pressure treated with a chemical that is toxic to termites Foundation with insulation that could conceal a termite infestation, measures must be taken to inhibit concealed movement
15 Building Permits Windows or other openings at or below grade contain wood elements, the bottom of window wells or adjacent ground shall be at least 150mm (6 ) below the nearest wood unless the wood is pressure-treated with a chemical toxic to termites Wood that is treated to resist termites shall be identified by a mark
16 Termite Program Borate The City has a contract for the application of Borate Spray and Rod treatment with; BPS Balson Preventative Solutions Elora, ON info@balsonpreventativesolutions.ca
17 Termite Program Borate What do we plan on doing Applying Borate Wood preservative on approximately 12 existing sheds (interior and exterior) Installing Borate Rods in approximately 240 existing wooden fence posts and 110 existing wooden deck posts A notice will be hand delivered to each of the 23 properties giving 48 hour notice prior to commencing
18 Termite Program Borate What is required of you To apply Borate Wood preservative on existing sheds (interior and exterior) ** All sheds must be emptied and all material cleared from around the shed for treatment to be completed **
19 Termite Program Borate What is required of you To install Borate Rods in existing wooden posts (fence and deck) ** Access is required to all posts, ensure fence posts are clear of debris or obstructions. For deck posts, either remove skirting for access under the deck, if the deck is lower than 36 a section 24 x 24 of decking is to be removed at post locations**
20 Termite Program Nematodes The City has a contract for the application of Entomopathogenic Nematodes with; Kollegiate Lawn Care Waterloo, ON
21 Termite Program Nematodes What do we plan on doing Applying Nematodes to the 23 properties bound in by Briargate and Greenock both in the spring and fall of 2015 Watering of lawns as needed for 4-7 days after application of Nematodes A notice will be hand delivered to each of the 23 properties giving 48 hour notice prior to commencing
22 Termite Program Nematodes What is required of you To apply Nematodes to private and public property ** Please arrange to have access to your yard as well please keep pets inside during application for the contractors safety **
23 Termite Program Yard Waste Weekends As in the previous year we will be offering Yard Cleanup Weekends again this year; Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31, 2015 AND Friday September 18 to Sunday September 20, 2015 (Flyer included in your envelope)
24 Termite Program Monitoring Traps The City has a contract for the fabrication, installation and maintenance of Termite monitoring traps with; Termites Unlimited Guelph, ON
25 Termite Program Monitoring Traps What do we plan on doing Installing 472 traps in the Red and Blue Zones (8 traps per property in the Red Zone and 3 traps per property in the Blue Zone) Traps will be checked between 5 and 11 times from June and October with the area split into Side A, Side B and Side C
26 Termite Program Monitoring Traps What is required of you To install monitoring traps on private property ** Please arrange to have access to your yard as well please keep pets inside during installation of traps and during inspection days for the contractors safety **
