1 Your cold weather guide to services in Surrey It s important that we are all prepared for bad weather or emergencies during the winter months. This booklet tells you where you can get details of local support and the services available. working in partnership with your local authority
2 Keeping warm over the winter months can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health problems like pneumonia. We have provided you with a checklist of things you can do to make sure your house is warm. Keep warm and save money Draw your curtains at dusk. Get your electric blanket tested. Contact your energy company about joining their Priority Service Register, which gives extra assistance to customers with disabilities or long-term health conditions. Change the way you pay your bill: consider monthly direct debit and paperless billing. Compare and switch energy suppliers. Ensure you have: adequate insulation in your loft, cavity walls and have fitted adequate draught proofing. Check you are using your heating controls correctly and that your boiler is working properly. 4 Low interest loans to finance improvements The Home Trust Loan is a low cost, home improvement service and lending scheme for homeowners whose properties need repairs or maintenance, but who do not have the funds available to carry out the work. Funds can be used for boiler replacements, changing windows or doors, solid wall insulation or flat roof insulation. 5 Stay healthy get a seasonal flu jab In non emergency situations, use your local Pharmacist for advice and medication, your GP or NHS Walk-in Centre or Minor Injuries Unit. When your surgery is closed you can ring Harmoni Thamesdoc to get advice from a nurse or doctor. Eat a varied diet and have plenty of hot food and drink. Stock up on tinned and frozen foods as well as over-the-counter cough and cold remedies. Find out if you re entitled to a free seasonal flu jab. Use soap and water to wash hands to keep the bugs at bay.
