4 İSTANBUL MEDENİYET UNIVERSITY İSTANBUL MEDENİYET UNIVERSITY AT A GLANCE İstanbul Medeniyet University (IMU) which is located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, within the border of Uskudar and Kadıkoy, consists of 11 faculties, 2 schools and 4 graduate schools. Our university, founded pursuant to law no. 6005, which was published on 21 July 2010 under the no in the Official Gazette, carried out its foundation studies at Camlica Sabahattin Zaim Cultural Center. The university, which began to build its institutional structure, also organized various exploration and development meetings with the idea of what to have in this process, what to do and what not to do while determining its teammates. In order to build the future of our university, a road map was created using expert knowledge and experience of our colleagues. Cooperations were developed with various local and foreign stakeholders and institutions. IMU has also a research and training hospital which started carrying out health services with the Faculty of Medicine. IMU provides education in two campuses; one in Goztepe and the other in Maltepe. Postgraduate education started in the spring semester of the academic year and undergraduate education started in the fall semester of the academic year. Some departments in the Faculty of Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Faculty of Medicine are currently accepting undergraduate students. IMU offers one year intensive English language education in the School of Foreign Languages at Maltepe Campus. Besides collaborating with national and international universities and institutions, IMU also organizes civilization and research conferences and symposia, projects and various activities such as Children s University. 4 5

8 EDUCATION UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AT IMU IMU currently provides undergraduate education at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (History, Philosophy and Turkish Language and Literature), Faculty of Political Sciences (Economics and International Relations) and Faculty of Medicine

9 The Medium of Instruction at IMU EDUCATION The Medium of Instruction at IMU is Turkish and English. A one-year intensive English program is compulsory for the students who do not have enough English language proficiency. Placement and Proficiency Examinations The students who do not have a proof of their English language proficiency have to take a placement and proficiency exam. Placement is a multiple choice exam and aims to determine the grammar, vocabulary and reading levels of the students. Students who get required scores are given a proficiency exam. Proficiency exam aims to assess language skills such as reading, listening, writing, note-taking and speaking

Integrated education system and problem based education programs will be implemented in the medical training which is planned to include at least 30% English instruction. Therefore, it is not possible to catch future with an education model that offers readily available knowledge because the function of knowledge is directly related to the process of the production of that knowledge. Even if ready knowledge can meet the needs of today partially, it doesn t meet the needs of future. Therefore it is necessary to improve the skill of producing original ideas and evaluating the knowledge as well as the access to the available knowledge. In order to provide this, students should be removed from the position of being passive. The main duty of the educator should be to coordinate this process properly by sharing his/her own experiences. 47 Medeniyet Research Center (İSMAM) Medeniyet Research Center Research Units RESEARCH AND APPLICATION CENTERS ISMAM based on IMU s mission of being a research university and including many subunits, has started its services IMU, putting emphasis on research publication and scientific organizations, aims to fulfill its strategic goals with Medeniyet Research Center (İSMAM). ISMAM primarily aims to coordinate the research conducted by academic members from different faculties and departments of our university.
