Workplace Solutions Supervisor Intervention Training
What is Workplace Solutions? Workplace Solutions is the new name for the internal Employee Assistance Program Workplace Solutions is a work-based intervention program aimed at the early identification and resolution of both work and personal problems that may adversely affect performance. Workplace Solutions is another company resource to help HRBPs, Supervisors and Managers intervene with employees and get them to treatment when normal coaching techniques and performance plans haven t worked.
Mental Health in the Workplace 5 of the top 10 causes of worldwide workplace disability are mental health disorders (depression, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia)* 13% of employees have a diagnosable problem at any given time** Over a lifetime, 33% of people have a problem that could benefit from mental health services** * 2001 World Health Organization Report ** ECA Study (NIMH 1990)
Mental Health in the Workplace 45% of workplace absences are for mental health reasons Employees with personal problems are most likely to: Use more medical benefits Have accidents and injuries Cost shifting - increase in medical costs if mental health expenditures are decreased. Presenteeism - workers who give face time Few seek treatment on their own without some type of intervention
Workplace Stress Mergers, acquisitions, and technology advances are the norm Today s assets are in knowledge and creative thinking power (our minds are more important than ever) Rate of global change may increase stress and uncertainty for employees
Depression in the Workplace The #1 worldwide reason for workplace disability is depression In any given year, 9.5% of the population suffers from a depressive illness Nearly 2/3 of the costs of depression are in lowered productivity, absences, poor teamwork, accidents and turnover costs (hidden costs) Only 20% of depressed people seek treatment on their own. One in 5 receive adequate treatment 70%+ of people diagnosed with depression are employed. Depressed employees have, on average, 4 times more medical costs per year than employees without depression.
Substance Abuse Statistics Approximately 10% of the population has a substance abuse problem 7% of full-time workers use illicit drugs and 7% are heavy drinkers 90% of alcohol abusers are employed 73% of current drug users are employed 64% of substance abusers say it affects their performance 20-40% of hospital admissions are for complications related to substance abuse
Substance Abusers Are 1/3 less productive Use 3 times more sick days 5 times more likely to file worker s comp claims 3 times more likely to be late for work More likely to have accidents and injuries Casual drinkers, in aggregate, account for far more incidents of absenteeism, tardiness and poor quality work than those regarded as alcohol dependent
Symptoms? Which is it? Depression Poor performance Absenteeism Presenteeism Interpersonal probs. Irritability/ mood swings Hopelessness Withdrawal Fatigue Change in weight Poor hygiene Substance Abuse Poor performance Absenteeism Presenteeism Interpersonal probs. Irritability/ mood swings Hopelessness Withdrawal Fatigue Loss of weight Poor hygiene Trouble with the law
