3 SECTION 2: RATIONALE FOR AND AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME a) Rationale (Justify the proposal in terms of its strategic fit with School /college development plans, the College Strategy for the Development of Higher Education, regional and national priorities for addressing knowledge and skills shortages and/ or the specific needs of employers and or potential students. Pay particular attention to the provision of progression opportunities and any articulation agreements or progression accords that this proposal will underpin). City College Norwich has been a major provider of higher education within the FE sector since the 1960s, during that period the scale and focus of the HE provision has changed to reflect the many and varied external influences to which the college has responded. Because of its close relationship with the business, commercial and public sector communities of Norwich and the wider region, the college s HE provision has always concentrated on vocational and professional courses. The development of Higher Education provision is driven through the individual School Development Plans; these articulate the Higher Skills pathways within a sector or discipline which is also contextualised by an overarching college HE framework. Thus HE policy is derived centrally but implemented locally within the individual schools. [The Strategic Development of Higher Education at CCN 2009/ /2012] The School Development Plan of the School for Creative and Business Industries outline the schools ambition to respond to real industry needs. Higher Education provision within the school is regularly reviewed and aims to keep up to date its education and training offered. The school aims to aligns to the priorities identified for workforce development within the creative industries; an industry where 44% of the workforce are self-employed or freelance. This programme, which will reside in the School for Creative and Business Industries, will be a progression opportunity of a one year top up for graduates from FdA Art & Wellbeing, FdA Popular Music, FdA Media, FdA Community Drama Practice, Fda Teaching Assistants and FdA Journalism. Specifically, it will replace the established BA Hons. Popular Music and replace the current progression opportunity afforded to students on the Fda Art & Wellbeing, where current articulation accords exist with NUCA for BA Hons Visual Studies. The BA Hons Visual Studies course is closing in This programme recognises the need for creative practitioners to work in a variety of settings, working in isolation, small communities or collaboratively across the sector. The Creative Blueprints for the East of England, 2009 and the Creative Blueprints for Visual Arts, Craft and Performing Arts 2010, and the recently produced Blueprint for Music 2011, have informed the skills and workforce development needed for the industry and have been taken into consideration when developing this programme. Following the amalgamation of the School of Creative Arts and the School for Business, to what is now titled the School for Creative and Business Industries, students within the school have benefited from the wealth of expertise within the staffing establishment. For example at level three, the delivery of business skills to creative students and creative approaches to business and enterprise students. This proposed course will enable the sharing of this expertise at a level six, and will include enterprise. ccn-uea Programme proposal document (template) 3 of 16 CCNUEA proposal document

4 The BA Creative Practices with Enterprise builds upon FdA student learning at Higher Education levels 4 and 5. It permits a natural internal progression route from the following Foundation Degrees for graduates from FdA Art & Wellbeing, FdA Popular Music, FdA Media, Fda Community Drama Practice. Fda Teaching Assistants and FdA Journalism. b) Aims (Explain the purpose of the award in terms of the overarching educational and skills development a successful student will achieve, the vocational and or further personal professional development opportunities that may follow and the audience for whom the programme is intended ). The programme is intended for those foundation degree programmes listed above but will not exclude progression from other foundation degrees where mapped. At the centre of the programme is the development of learning and creative skills, as well as developing an understanding of the value of interdisciplinary approaches and networking. Students will learn through exploration of their individually chosen pathways within a dissertation project and as a consequence take initiative, be proactive, collaborative, and entrepreneurial and use problem solving methods to present their work to target audience. In summary, this proposed course aims to: Enable current Fda Graduates progression to honours level; thus further entry into career options and including teacher training Provide graduates the opportunity to work across creative disciplines Share discourse and creative dialogue Understand the nature of the sector and how creative practitioners work in isolation, small communities and collaboratively Build on practical skills acquired in previous study Build on creative ideas, thinking and analytical skills acquired in previous study Build on Business skills acquired in previous study Develop an understanding of enterprise Acquire skills for enterprise and employability Further progression opportunities to employment, freelance working or self-employment within the sector exist. Alternatively graduates may choose further study at post-graduate level, including teacher training.
