1 Application Note Windows 2008 and IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT-GE) PREFACE This document describes how to install and use IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool GUI Edition (ITDT-GE) on a Windows 2008 x 64 server environment. ITDT-GE is only used for testing, collecting logs and general maintenance with IBM tape drives in Overland Storage libraries. The document walks the reader with installing and using basic functional tasks with ITDT-GE. The utility is compatible with Windows 2003, Windows bit and 64bit. Windows 2008R2 x64 SP1, JRE , ITDT and a NEO 400s were used during the creation of this document. The IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool is designed to: Run quick or extended diagnostics on tape drives Retrieve dumps from tape drives and libraries Perform a firmware update on tape drives Test the performance of the environment by completely writing a cartridge and measuring performance Verify tape drive compression Measure system performance Retrieve and display cartridge usage information Scan the system to discover all supported tape and library devices. Perform a connection test. This test is used to verify that all devices are attached properly Perform a sequence of sub-tests to check if the tape device is defective and output a pass/fail result PREREQUISITE Must have Java JRE 1.6 or higher installed. 2 ITDT-GE installation Procedure 1. Verify Windows Device Manager identifies the Tape Drives. The IBM Tape Drivers do not need to be installed in order to use ITDT-GE. Warning: Before installing and using ITDT-GE, please make sure of the following. All Backup Application services are stopped. When using ITDT-GE, please make sure those only scratch tapes are available in the unit. Remove any tapes that cannot be overwritten. 2. Download the ITDT-GE utility from the Overland Storage Web Portal. Click on the following link to navigate and download the ITDT-GE utility. Download the utility to a temporary directory on the local system with the tape devices attached to.

3 3. Double-click on the install_itdt_ge_x86_64_ exe. 4. Click on Run when the following dialog window appears.

4 5. Click on Next when the following window appears. 6. Continue to click on Next.

5 7. Accept the Software License Agreement and click on Next. 8. Select the install path or click on Next to accept the defaults.

6 9. Click Next when the following appears. 10. Click Next when the following appears.

8 Starting and Scanning Devices with ITDT-GE The following procedure walks the reader on starting ITDT-GE and scanning all supported tape and library devices that are attached to the computer system. Before continuing, make sure no other program is accessing the devices used by ITDT-GE. For example, stop the backup jobs that are accessing the devices when using ITDT, or if not sure, stop the entire backup application. 1. Click on Start, Programs and browse for ITDT Graphical Edition.

9 2. When ITDT utility appears, click on Scan. When the confirmation dialog window appears, click on Yes to continue.

10 3. After a few moments, all devices found on the system are detected. Select the device to access it. Note the devices in the left image displays a NEO 400s which displays 3 devices, a library (3573-TL and two LTO-5 tape drives). The image on the right is the NEO 2000e library, which will not be listed. Only the drives for the library are listed. This is normal for the NEO E-series libraries (2000e/4000e/8000e) which will not be listed, only the tape drives.

11 Collecting a Tape Drive Dump with ITDT-GE You may be required to take a Tape Drive Dump. The following procedure walks the reader on how to pull the dump files for Technical Support. 1. Select the device to pull a dump. Click on the Dump drop down and select Dump.

12 2. A new task is created from the right-pane which displays the progress bar. 3. The task shows a check mark once the task has completed.

13 4. The dump files are located in the User directory and.itdt-ge\output directory. Compress the files and send them to Technical Support. 5. In order to review the logs, click on the Log Files option and select Open Log File. Select the *.blz file.

15 Running a System Test with ITDT-GE The following procedure walks the reader in running a basic System Test to the tape drive. A scratch media is required in order to run the System Test. This means a tape that can be overwritten. Do not load the media into the drive but rather, insert the scratch tape cartridge into the Mail Slot of the unit. 1. Click the Test drop-down and select System Test.

16 2. When the following dialog window appears. Click on Select or Insert. If you chose insert, the media option, you will need to insert a media into the Mail Slot. The Select option allows you to select a media in the data slot. ** Make sure the media in the data slot is a scratch media ** 3. The following list appears, select the scratch media and click on Start.

17 The Processing step indicates that library has moved the tape into the drive automatically and that the current process is a Mount Tape operation. 4. Another confirmation is displayed; select Yes to Overwrite the tape or No to abort the System Test.

18 5. The System Test may take as long 10 minutes to run. If the test run s successfully a green check mark is indicated for the task. If not a red X is displayed.
