DEBBIE STURM TO DIRECT COUNSELING PROGRAMS Debbie Sturm, who has been Coordinator of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, will also take on the duties of the Director of Counseling Programs this fall semester. She is spending time in Italy and Malta for several weeks before immersing herself in our assessment procedures, summer courses, and a CACREP self-study for the Ph.D. Program. Lennie Echterling, who has served in the role of Director for more years than he can remember, will continue on as Coordinator of the Ph.D. in Counseling and Supervision. He is looking forward to teaching more, promoting the doctorate program, and playing more with his grandkids. Michele Kielty and Renee Staton will be sharing the duties of Coordinator of the School Counseling Program. They are excited to continue the positive momentum of the program and, given that they are such collaborative colleagues, we are certain that they will be generous in sharing with one another. Best wishes, fearless leaders! DAVID FORD JOINS COUNSELING FACULTY David Ford, who recently was awarded his Ph.D. from Old Dominion University, is joining our JMU Counseling faculty as an assistant professor and will begin teaching this fall semester. 4 concerns. Well done, Rebecca! For more information on her achievements, go to Daria White, another of our doctoral students, received the JMU Award for Feminist Scholarship and Creative Work for her exhibit, "Balkan Women," which featured dramatic photographs and narratives that bore witness to the historical traumas of elderly women in Bulgaria. Her exhibit has been displayed at several venues, including Eastern Mennonite University, the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington, the Cultural Center of Bansko in Bulgaria, and the Forbes Center Lobby at James Madison University. Beautiful work, Daria! Elizabeth Cranford, one of our graduating School Counseling students, received the Virginia School Counselors Association s Graduate Student of the Year Award for James Madison University at the VSCA conference this Friday. Congratulations, Elizabeth, on your welldeserved award! COMPS TO TAKE PLACE IN MAY AND JUNE The oral comprehensive examinations will take place throughout the summer to accommodate the schedules of both students and faculty members. The comprehensive examination now includes important components that sample counseling knowledge, skills and practices: practicum documentation of activities, recorded tape segment of counseling work, accompanying transcript and written analysis, oral examination, and follow-up session. Clinical Mental Health Counseling students also submit a proposal for the Ed.S. Research Project and a completed committee approval form. ED.S. PROJECT AND DISSERTATION DEADLINE SET If you are completing your Ed.S. research or Ph.D. dissertation this summer semester, then you must submit your final report to The Graduate School by Friday, July 11. The new School Counseling students include: Brittany Cover, Pierre Durant, Kelsey Newman, Kara Shifflett, Anda Weaver, Luke Wilkinson, and Nicole Yoder. Welcome, all! We re excited that you are joining our learning community! OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALK A SUCCESS On Sunday, March 30, a surprising number of walkers braved the snow, sleet, rain, and wind to participate in the fourth annual Out of the Darkness Walk. Supported by the Central Valley Counselors Association and hosted by the officers and members of JMU's Chi Sigma Iota, the event raised funds for research and services sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This year, the event raised over $6,000! More importantly, the walk provided relatives and friends a meaningful opportunity to share their memories of loved ones lost to suicide, offer support to one another, educate the public regarding this important issue, and honor the resilience of the human spirit. To see photos of the Walk, you can go to: This event would not have been possible without the active involvement of dozens of CSI officers and members, JMU counseling students and alumni, community volunteers, faculty members, and practitioners. Thanks and congratulations to everybody involved for this outstanding accomplishment! APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION DUE THIS MONTH If you plan to complete your training by Friday, August 8, there is a simple procedure that you should follow.
