1 IOWA HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL S ALL TIME BEST LIST WHY THE LIST? HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO IT AND A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE In 2001 the IHSAA researched and produced the first ever all-time best baseball list from records, microfilm newspaper stories and school reports. Some of those performances are included in the National High School Record Book printed by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Obviously, the game has changed through the years with technology of equipment, playing surfaces, playing rules including the use of a pitcher, and the number of games allowed in a season. There is no definitive way to factor those things from performances. We do want to acknowledge the great number of outstanding players and teams that you will not find on these lists because their performances were not chronicled or fewer competition dates prevented them from reaching the minimum standard. Nevertheless they remain a significant part of Iowa prep history and in a real sense they are why this list was generated. While the IHSAA recognizes performances accomplished in the summer after a student s eighth grade year, the NFHS recognizes only performances accomplished after a student enters ninth grade. Information on the baseball webpage is the best on record performances we have been able identify. The list continues as a work in progress. We accept verified information of performances anytime, although the list is best served if we receive them at the time they occur. Not all coaches/ schools report qualifying performances. However, we urge each school/community and statisticians to compare their performances and school records to the following list and send us any qualifying performance(s) so that students can be officially recognized. Performances must have been achieved in a high school game sanctioned by the IHSAA. Iowa was the first state to have an athletic association sponsored Summer State Baseball Tournament, inaugurating the program in Summer marks are the basis for this list, although we have included notable performances, with notation from spring or fall seasons. The IHSAA started with a Spring State Tournament which ran from 1928 through 1972 and also a Fall State Tournament, 1939 through Iowa State College sponsored a spring invitational state tournament from A synopsis of the Summer State Tournaments and the championships scores of the fall and spring championships is included in the State Tournament Stat Book, which the IHSAA updates annually and places on our website ( Finally, we owe a debt of thanks to the large number of media who have contributed information to this endeavor.
