1 Ed.D. in Human and Organizational Learning Foggy Bottom Main Office (202) (202) (fax) The Doctor of Education in HOL is designed to provide professionals, managers, and consultants with a foundation in HOL theories, concepts and practices. Each student is required to take a minimum of 57 credit hours of coursework along with a minimum of 12 dissertation credits. There are 12 required courses; the remaining courses are chosen with your advisor to create an individually designed program around your area of interest. Concentration areas may be selected from areas such as organizational development and change; individual and group learning processes; organizational learning, global HOL and the humane organization, among others. Students may also select electives from other programs within GW or the Consortium. Dissertation Minimum of 12 credits A dissertation is required of all candidates. After admission to candidacy, a student must register for a minimum of 24 semester hours of dissertation credit (6 credits of HaL 8999 for the first two semesters, credits of HaL 8999 for the next four semesters and one credit of HaL 0940 per semester thereafter until the oral dissertation defense is complete). 3 Human and Organizational Learning Courses (AY 10-11) HOl 6700 Foundations of Human Resource Development The primary emphasis of this course is on how individuals and groups learn and interact within organizations and how organizations function and learn. Topics include: motivation, group dynamics, systems theory, organizational culture, and change. HOl 6701 Adult learning Addresses the premises and theories used to meet the learning need of adults. An overview of various learning theories and the impact of age and adult development on learners will be examined_ Topics include: self-directed learning, accommodating individual learning needs, and the creation of effective learning. HOl6702 Organizational Change I (Diagnosis) Throughout this course, the assessment of organizational conditions, including the collection and interpretation of information, its operations, and problems (human, structural, and systemic) are examined. Learners collect and analyze data to provide solutions to enhance organizational effectiveness. HOl670 Organizational Change II (Consulting) Introduction to the concepts, methods, and skills required for effective consultation in organizations. Meeting the human needs in organizations, while improving performance and productivity, as either an internal or an external consultant. Students undertake a consulting project in an organization. Prerequisite: HOL HOl 6704 Leadership in Organizations Leadership in organiza tions, specifically "h-ansformational leadership", is emphasized. Research and leadership theory from the 1970s to the present will be the focus of this course. Students will examine their own leadership style and plan for their continued development as a leader. HOl 6705 Strategic Human Performance Processes Overview of systematic coordination and use of HR management concepts as an integral element of organizational strategy. HRD implications of these tools, with an emphasis on building the HR system. HOl 6706 Issues Capstone Presents current issues and topics of importance in the field. Students gather data and analyze key topics associated with areas such as globalization, diversity in the workplace, organizational development, and ethics. HOL 6707 Organizational Learning Learning in an organizational context. Processes through which the organization as a system learns, unlearns, changes, and disseminates information. Organizational learning theories address the processes and barriers of gathering, using, developing, and retaining knowledge in organizations. HOL 6721 Assessing the Impact of HRD Efforts Discusses knowledge and skills needed to evaluate the impact and return on investment of HRD efforts. Focus on how to plan and conduct systematic evaluations of HRD efforts, including the choice, development, and use of various tools for measuring individual, group, and organizational change.

4 HOl6724 Increasing the Capacity to learn Examines the act of experiential learning and its relalionship to critical reflection and transformation. Investigates techniques that can enhance one's capacity for deep learning. Understand and experience a learning community HOl6725 Internship in HRD Supervised experience is selected in areas of human resource development and adult education. course is for learners wishing practical experience in a human resources environment. This HOL 674 Action Learning Discusses processes, principles, and skills necessary to participate in and lead both single and multipleproblem action learning sets. The six dimensions of action learning; educational psychological, political, sociological, and management theories underlying action learning are explored. HOL 6744 Meaningful Workplaces Characteristics of the humane organization and of meaningful work. Topics include: spirituality and work, life purpose/ goals, meaningful learning, job sculpting/ crafting, work/life balance, telecommuting & virtual work, and the organization as community. HOL 6746 Work Groups and Teams in Organizations Exploration of the nature of work groups and teams as they are utilized in organizational Group and team dynamics, facilitating and leading skills, and group roles and boundaries. settings. HOL 6747 International and Multicultural Issues in Organizations Examines the impact of culture and globalization on U.s. and international HRD programs and practices. Adult learning and organizational change approaches that develop and utilize the synergy of workforce diversity are discussed. HOL 6100 Executive Coaching (Special Workshop, elective) Provides an introduction to the importance of the coaching technique, an understanding of human learning/ change in the workplace, and an overview of the benefits for both the executive as well as the company. Students will design a coaching program in their organization for both group and individual coaching and participate as both a coach and an executive to understand the process. HOL 6101/8101 Research and Independent Study Working individually with a faculty member, the student designs and completes a learning project of special interest. HOL 610/6104 Thesis Research Master's students may elect to complete a thesis. HOL 8700 Foundations of Human and Organizational Learning This course is for doctoral students and focuses on the relationships between individuals and their interactions in groups within an organizational context. An overview of theoretical foundations of key areas associated with HOL are emphasized. Topics include: motivation, systems theory, group dynamics, organizational culture, and learning. HOL 8706 Interdisciplinary Readings Identifies issues at the individual, group, organization, constructs for a research study. societal, and global levels that can become

5 HOL 8720 Seminar: Applied Research in Human and Organizational Learning Provides an opportunity to examine actual research studies, with an emphasis on critiquing the components of both quantitative and qualitative research. This course is usually conducted in conjunction with the AHRD conference. HOL 8722 Seminar: Advanced Issues in HOL Provides an opportunity to investigate research topics, with special emphasis on doctoral dissertations. Using a topical focus, students learn the details of d~signing and planning dissertation research by reviewing dissertation construction and research design. HOL 8742 Work, Identity, and Adult Development This course explores the meaning of work in an adult's evolving identity. Intra-individual development and change during the adult life span, how work can augment and constrain adult development, and the interaction of personal characteristics with the demands of the work environment are covered. HOL 8998 Pre-Dissertation Seminar The purpose of this seminar is to help students prepare their dissertation proposal. This is the last course students take prior to moving into the dissertation phase of their program. HOL 8999 Dissertation Research Prerequisite: HOL 8998
