Collect the rental car at the airport and drive to Eysturoy. Along the way, we suggest you stop at Oyndarfjørður to have a look at Rinkusteinarnir (the rocking stones). Rinkusteinarnir are two gigantic cliffs near the coast just before you reach the village. According to legend, these cliffs are two pirate ships that will be rocking back and forth for eternity. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy. DAY 2 We suggest a visit to Fuglafjørður, the largest town on the Faroe Islands. The harbour is colourful and very busy, but if you follow the old path to Hellur until you reach the cairn on top of the pass you will soon find total peace and quiet. For further information contact the tourist information office in Fuglafjørður. On Eysturoy, you also have the option of taking a walk with a local guide around the idyllic Toftavatn lake. DAY 3 On the tour from Eysturoy to Tórshavn, we recommend a visit to the picturesque village of Saksun, which is located at the end of the road from the village of Hvalvík. The view is exceptional. The bay was once a protected natural harbour, but today the entry to the bay has silted over. At low tide, you can walk on the sand until you reach the sea. Continue to Tórshavn, where you take the ferry Smyril to Suðuroy. On the 2-hour trip you pass the islands of Sandoy, Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun. Overnight accommodation on Suðuroy. DAY 4 Experience the southern part of Suðuroy independently. For instance, you can take the mountain road to Sumba then walk a few hundred metres west to reach the edge of the cliff and a spectacular panoramic view of the Beinisvørð headland to your left. Continue the drive to the village of Sumba, stopping on the way in Pollurin to have a look at the idyllic harbour. Do not miss the lighthouse at Akraberg on the southern tip of the Faroe Islands. In Vágur, you can visit the Ruth Smith gallery and a shop called Sirri, which designs clothes made of local wool. Overnight accommodation on Suðuroy. DAY 5 Explore the northern part of Suðuroy independently. Drive to the old village of Sandvik, where one of the Faroe Islands most famous chiefs, Sigmundur Brestisson, was killed approx. 1,000 years ago. Drive or walk along the gravel road to see the free-standing cliff called Ásmundarstakkur. In the village of Hvalba you can visit the only coal mine in the Faroe Islands, which still operates according to traditional methods. A short walk Á Røðina immediately after the tunnel from Hvalba will take you to the dramatic western side of the island, which is definitely worth a visit. Overnight accommodation on Suðuroy. DAY 6 Visit the tourist office for informatioin and a walking map. Suðuroy has many good walks, e.g. to the top of Rávan and a walk to the award-winning Hvannhagi headland. In the afternoon, return by ferry to Tórshavn. See the art exhibition by Faroese artists on board the ferry. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn. DAY 7 Enjoy a day off in Tórshavn. We suggest a walk through the old part of town, Tinganes, á Reyni, and a visit to the Nordic House cultural centre. There is also an optional walk to the Kirkjubøur historic centre. 5 Tour 2: The classic tour The landscape on the Faroe Islands is unique, and the history and local culture are extremely rich. The weather changes constantly rain, mist, heat and sunshine which adds to the variety of the natural delights you will find here. There are birds and sheep, pristine nature and isolated villages. There is peace and quiet, broken only by the sound of rushing waterfalls and waves crashing against the cliffs. Exploring the Faroe Islands by car gives you the chance to see it all. DAY 2 On your way north we suggest a fascinating boat trip to the Vestmanna bird cliffs, sailing between the cliffs into some of the caves. This trip takes about two hours. Then on to the village of Tjørnuvík, which is surrounded by steep mountains. From here you can see the unique rock formations known as the Giant and the Old Hag off the north tip of Eysturoy. Drive across the only bridge across the Atlantic to the village of Eiði on Eysturoy, with its unique scenery and a spectacular view of Slættaratindur (882 m), the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy. DAY 3 Enjoy a day in Gjógv, which is known for its distinctive natural harbour. Here you can take a two-hour walk on your own with views of the bird cliffs, Djúpini and the beautiful valley of Ambadalur. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy. DAY 4 From the village of Leirvík, drive through the undersea tunnel to Klaksvík. The tunnel is decorated with lighting art by the famous Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. From Klaksvík you have many opportunities to explore the other Northern Islands: Kalsoy, Kunoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy, each with its own particular dramatic scenery. Overnight accommodation on the Northern Islands. DAY 5 On your way to Tórshavn, we suggest you stop at Gøta to visit the new church with its fantastic glass art decorations. DAY 6 Spend this day visiting the green island of Sandoy, also called the Saga Island. Sandoy is flatter than the other islands, but it is also rich in history and spectacular scenery. Take the ferry Teistin from the harbour Gamlarætt to Skopun. In the village of Sand you will be treated to coffee and cake in a private home. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn. DAY 7 Visit Kirkjubøur before leaving Tórshavn. Kirkjubøur is the oldest centre of history and culture in the Faroe Islands, with a picturesque old farm which has been owned by the same family for 17 generations. See the incomplete Magnus Cathedral and the small Olavskirke church from the Middle Ages. Upon arrival in Vágar, we suggest you take an unguided walk to a beautiful waterfall called Bøsdalafossur, from where you can see the free-standing cliff of Geituskoradrangur and Vágar s spectacular and rugged southern coast. DAY 3 By coach from the coach and ferry terminal in Tórshavn to Klaksvík. The route goes through the undersea tunnel, which is decorated with art by the famous Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. Klaksvík is the second largest town in the Faroe Islands and located on the island of Borðoy. Local buses and ferries make it easy to explore the other Northern Islands: Kalsoy, Kunoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy, each with its own particular dramatic scenery. The village of Viðareiði on Viðoy lies sheltered by the world s tallest headland, Enniberg. Overnight accommodation on the Northern Islands. DAY 4 There is plenty to see in Klaksvik: the beautiful Christianskirke church, Leikalund, a combined book café, gallery and music venue, and the Úti í Grøv plantation, located in beautiful surroundings. DAY 5 By coach from Klaksvík to Eysturoy, the second largest island on the Faroe Islands, which offers a wide range of experiences, including beautiful scenery and a modern town. DAY 6 Continue by coach from Eysturoy to the island of Vágar. Vágar is the island that was invaded by the British during the Second World War. Do not miss the spectacular view from the small village of Bøur over the dramatic islet of Tindhólmur. Today, since the opening of the tunnel a couple of years ago, it is possible to experience the previously isolated but inhabited village of Gásadalur. The skipper is the local boat builder, whose knowledge of where to find the fish has been passed down through generations. The Hvíthamar fishing boat is a traditional wooden Faroese boat, 9.4 m long and 3.1 m wide. Most likley you will catch cod, haddock, ling, pollack and many other species of fish. Last but not least, you may even be lucky enough to catch a halibut what a catch that would be!!! It is also possible to fish from Klaksvik with the ships Komet or Viljin, from Tórshavn with Vanir, and from Vestmanna with Blástein. 9 Tour 6: Faroe Islands for the children Take your parents to the wonderful and magical Faroe Islands and enjoy some fantastic adventures together. TOUR PROPOSAL 7 nights/8 days STARTING DAY any day you like. The tour is suitable for children of all ages. DAY 1 Arrival at the magical and wonderful Faroe Islands far far away. Collect the rental car at the airport and drive to Gjógv, where you spend the night. The route takes you through many colourful villages, down valleys and over high mountains, giving you an impression of the kind of experiences that await you in the week ahead. Overnight accommodation in Gjógv. DAY 2 & 3 Explore the village of Gjógv, which could rightly be described as a playground for children. There are plenty of options, such as playing in the stream that flows from the mountain through the village, and the walk fyri Oman Rætt with a map and a description consisting of small stories along the route. Feed the sheep together with one of the locals and listen to sheep stories. Overnight accommodation in Gjógv. DAY 4 Take the mountain road to Eiði, where you pass the highest mountain on the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur (882 m). Enjoy the view of Risin og Kellingin, two free-standing cliffs known as the Giant and the Old Hag. According to legend, these two figures were a couple who turned to stone when they tried to move the Faroe Islands to Iceland. In Eiði you can play on the pebbled beach or play football on the football field right next to the beach. If you get hungry, food is available at the Café Inn, which is located immediately before the only bridge across the Atlantic. Continue towards the village of Vestmanna. After approximately 15 minutes up the mountain, you reach Lómundaroyru, a scenic spot where you will spend the next two nights in a campervan, which is equipped with all the facilities you need. Upon arrival you will find the fishing rods waiting for you, so get down to the nearest lake and catch a rainbow trout for your dinner. The barbeque is ready outside your campervan. DAY 6 Drive to Tórshavn, the world s smallest capital. Explore Reyn, the old part of town with small houses with grass roofs and narrow lanes. A visit to a local family with children in Reyn can be arranged**. In Tórshavn you can choose between swimming, ten-pin bowling, a visit to Sjósavnið, the local aquarium (with saltwater fish from the waters around the Faroe Islands), museums, movies and many other exciting experiences. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn. DAY 7 Take the ferry Ritan from Tórshavn harbour to Nólsoy. There are hardly any cars on the island, so you can enjoy the peaceful village life. See Ro Ove s boat Diana Victoria. Ro Ove, the local hero, rowed on his own all the way to Langelinje in Denmark to kiss The Little Mermaid. Visit the taxidermist Jens Kjeld, who has a large collection of stuffed Faroese birds, or see what is left of the house where a princess from Scotland once lived. If you feel like catching crabs or fishing, you can borrow a bucket, spade and fishing net from the tourist information office. Food is available at the tourist information office or Kaffistovan.
