1 Department Course Title Prerequisite Basic Telephony and Switching Principles Digital Communications Code Course Description : This course presents the basics of telephone set, telephone networks, telephone exchanges, telephone traffic and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH)system. Moreover, the course describes the types of relays and signaling systems in the telephone networks COM 41 Semester Credit hr/w Contact hr/w Contact hr/sem. General Goal : The student can explain and discuss the basics of telephone network.. Also the student can deal with the telephone network components such as telephone set and telephone exchange. L W T L W T Behavioral Objectives : At the end of the course the student will be able to : Discuss the types of relays. Explain the telephony diagrams. State the types of exchanges. Explain the fundamental blocks of an exchange. Differentiate between the space switching and time switching. Describe the telephone set ( function and components). Identify the subscriber line networks. Describe the types and structure and fundamentals of the telephone networks. Explain the numbering plan in the telephone networks. Discuss the charging plan in the telephone systems. Describe the types and properties of the signaling systems. Explain the digital signaling network. Explain the telephone traffic and telephone density. Describe the variations in the telephone traffic and determine the busy hour. Describe the basic frame of the plesychronous digital hierarchy (PDH) system. Describe the basic frame of the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) system. State the advantages of the SDH system. International organization for telecommunications. Numbering plan(local, national and international) Charging plan. Other fundamental plans. 6-Signaling systems. The main properties of the signal. The different of types of signaling. Digital signaling network. 7-Telephone traffic. Telephone traffic parameters. Variations in telephone traffic. 8-Synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) system.
