2 Religious Education Today is the beginning of our religious education year. Welcome Back! We begin our year with Family Day in the Family Center hall, parents and children together (this is not a drop off day!) for prayer, a family project, news about what s in store for the year, and a chance to meet the catechists who will teach your children. We ask God s special blessing on all of our catechists and assistants, and look forward to a wonderful year with all of you. Please call the religious ed office with any questions: Peace and every blessing, Eva Calling All Current & Interested Altar Servers Fr. Coffiey will be hosting two training sessions for current and newly interested Altar Servers on Sunday, October 6 th at 11:45 a.m. and Wednesday, October 9 th at 7 p.m. in the Church. These sessions will last approximately one hour. Altar serving is a special privilege and is open to responsible, astute, and mature young boys and girls who have AT LEAST made their First Holy Communion. It is also recommended that if you are a current Altar Server to attend, so you may brush up on your skills and be an example for the new servers. If you have questions or would like to register, please call Fr. Coffiey at the rectory or at ccoffiey@yahoo.com. Today s second collection is taken in support of the diocesan tuition assistance program. Monies raised through this collection coupled with the diocese s tuition assistance endowment provides financial assistance to hundreds of deserving families who seek a Catholic education for their children but who cannot afford the full cost of tuition. If you are not prepared to contribute today, you may drop your contribution off at the parish office or place it in next week s collection basket. Visit the diocesan website at Pastor s Column GOD IS ON THE SIDE OF THE POOR Two of today s readings make it quite clear that God is on the side of the poor. Amos describes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his cleverness and is rewarded. Like the community, to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believers, members of the Jewish and Christian communities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as confusing as our own. Thank a Priest on Priesthood Sunday! Priesthood Sunday is the last Sunday in September. It is a time to show appreciation to our parish priests for all that they do for us. Is there a better way to say thank-you than to remember Father in prayer? You may pray for your parish priest, seminarian, or our Bishop. If you have unwanted or broken rosaries please place them in the basket as you enter the church. Thank you! We Offer Gluten Free Host If you have a medical condition that requires you to receive a gluten-free host, please let us know before Mass.

6 St. Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Wilmington The 2019 Red Mass, sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society, will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday, October 7th at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church. A complimentary dinner provided by Morris James, LLP will follow in the Church Hall. The Most Reverend W. Francis Malooly, Bishop of Wilmington, who will preside over the Mass, said the Red Mass reminds our lawyers and justices and all of us that we are to clearly live out our faith and its values in the public forum. Our public service is a direct imitation of Jesus, who was the Servant of all. I look forward to recommitting myself as we celebrate this year s Red Mass. Bishop John Barres, from the Diocese of Rockville Centre is the Homilist. The Red Mass refers to a Mass celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church for judges, prosecutors, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials. The Mass requests guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek justice and offers them the opportunity to reflect upon their God-given power and responsibility in the legal profession. The Red Mass is celebrated annually throughout the United States, including the District of Columbia. The term Red Mass refers not only to the red vestments worn by Royal Judges, participating in the Pope s tribunal, but also to the traditional use of the color, red, as representation of the Holy Spirit. The history of the Red Mass dates to medieval France. Historians believe that the first Red Mass was celebrated around 1200; the first documented Red Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of Paris in By 1310, the Red Mass had become a yearly tradition in England to commemorate the beginning of each new Court term. The tradition was adopted in the United States in the early 20th century and the St. Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Wilmington has sponsored a Red Mass annually since Contact: Society s President Sean Haney, Esq.
