5 1. General 1.1. About the Company Froglogic GmbH was founded in 2003 with the purpose of creating a cross-platform GUI test automation tool that can support the automation of tests based on Qt, a popular cross-platform GUI framework. Froglogic named this tool Squish. Due to customer demand Squish was later extended to support test automation for other GUI toolkits. Froglogic has over 3500 customers including Google, Nokia, Siemens, Ericsson, Airbus etc Product Portfolio Squish Test Automation Suite covers a variety of features and services : - Squish GUI Tester is a cross platform GUI test automation tool for functional GUI regression tests. - Squish Coco is a cross platform cross compiler tool that analyzes the test coverage of C, C++, C# and Tcl code - Squish Services which includes customization, training, support, consulting and mentoring services Program Parts Squish consist of two main components: the Squish server and the Squish runner. The Setup of these components is different depending on the platform of the application that is being tested. Squish has IDE which is based on Eclipse. In most cases the Squish IDE contains both the server and the runner. The test scripts are executed by the runner. The runner then connects to the server which is able to communicate with the AUT(Application under Test). The server injects a hook into the AUT to be able to see the application s objects and work with them. Figure 1: Desktop Architecture 1 / 14

In such cases the Squish runner communicates over the network with the Squish server which should be installed on the embedded device Supported Interfaces Squish supports a variety of platforms and technologies: - Desktop such as Qt, Java, native Windows, Mac OS X - Mobile devices such as Apple ios and Android - Web applications such as html5, flex and java applets - Embedded devices 1.5. 7 There is also a blog which contains weekly tips of best practices when using Squish. These blog posts are organized into different topics in what is called the Squish Knowledge base. Squish also provides weekly Webinars where a quick overview of Squish is explained. Registration is required for attendance of these Webinars. Finally there is also Video Tutorials on the website as well as Youtube. This video tutorials are sometimes recordings of the weekly webinars. It is also recommended for users to try Squish by themselves. This is done by requesting an evaluation license which is valid for 30 days. During the evaluation period the users have access to support as well. 3 / 14

8 2. Specification Squish has three possibilities for writing the test cases: Capture/Replay using the recorder, programming or a combination of both. The test scripts can be written in Python, Javascript, Ruby, Perl and Tcl Test Case Design In Squish there are two ways in which test cases can be written: - Script Test Cases - BDD Test Cases (Behavior-Driven Development) Script Test cases are test cases written directly in one of the scripting languages stated above, while BDD test cases are test cases that use Feature files to write the test cases using Given, When and Then statements. These statements are then mapped into a method in the test scripts. Using BDD is useful if the person writing the test cases has no programming skills. Below is an example of how a test case would look like: Figure 3: BDD Test Case Example 2.2. Data-driven Tests Data-driven testing can be easily done using Squish. To do this one needs simply: 1. Record the test case that should be repeated once. 2. Create a TSV file(tab separated values) which is used to store the data that should be tested. 3. Highlight the steps that should be repeated and right click and select make code data driven. 4. Choose the TSV file previously created and click finish and the script will be edited to contain variables instead of the strings and these variables refer to a row in the TSV file each test run. 4 / 14
