1 Fukuoka Women s University Fukuoka Women s University (FWU), founded in 1923, is one of the oldest public universities for women in Japan. Since then, according to the university s philosophy of fostering the next generation of female leaders, we have continuously reformed the existing faculties and graduate schools in harmony with current social and educational needs. The Faculty of International Arts and Sciences was recently founded in keeping with our policy of internationalization, and in April 2015, our new graduate schools will open, offering three different programs, as follows: (1) Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences * Master s Program for Language and Culture * Master s Program for Social Sciences (2) Graduate School of Health and Environmental Sciences * Master s Program for Health and Environmental Sciences (3) Graduate School of Letters * PhD Program for English Language and Literature For further information of FWU, visit the website at Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences In order to realize the principle upon which this graduate school for the field of Humanities and the Social Sciences has been founded, two areas of specialization have been designated: the Language and Culture Program and the Social Sciences Program. It is our purpose in establishing these graduate research programs to foster the development of top-quality, specialized human resources, graduates who possess both the practical abilities and specialized knowledge necessary in today s globalizing society, given the mutual influences of law, economics, society, and culture. The Master s Program for Language and Culture consists of two courses, the Division of Japanese Language and Culture and the Division of English Language and Culture (in English speaking regions), whose goal is to deepen comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the rich linguistic and literary cultures of Japan and English-speaking regions, and to promote a comparative research perspective newly formulated from a global perspective. The Master s Program for Social Sciences consists of two course, the Division of International Industrial Sciences and the Division of International Relations, whose goal 1

2 is to foster the development of top-quality, specialized human resources, graduates who are capable of making use in contemporary society of insights gained concerning a wide and varied range of international economic activities and international political perspectives. Graduate School of Health and Environmental Sciences The Master s Program of Health and Environmental Sciences aims to contribute to the advancement of the transdisciplinary sciences of human environments, making and developing a healthier society in harmony with the environments. In order to realize the principle, three areas of specialization have been designated: the Division of Natural Sciences and Environment, the Division of Nutrition and Health Sciences, and the Division of Environmental Management. In the division of Natural Sciences and Environment, education and research are carried out with the goal of fostering the development of graduates with a solid grasp of the interrelations between human society and various natural phenomena; these graduates will be capable of evaluating environmental problems and also elucidating the underlying phenomena of materials and life sciences, as well as considering technological measures for the solution of environmental problems. The division of Nutrition and Health Sciences conducts education and research with the goal of helping graduates acquire the practical knowledge and skill indispensable for building a social environment conductive to human health, while solving a variety of lifestyle-related problems of health and diet, and promoting a nutritional environment which helps prevent and control lifestyle-related illnesses and encourage a healthy life. Education and research in the division of Environmental Management are carried out to create sustainable living environments within human society. While addressing problems of our individual and social environments, and clarifying mutual interactions between individuals and the community, this area seeks a balance between the social and natural environment that will enable a rational and rewarding future for everyone in the society.
