1 SCCC Scholarship Transfer Guide Welcome to the SCCC Scholarship Transfer Guide! By now you are carefully considering the next step in planning your educational future. For many students, finding the financial resources to pay for college directly influences their choice on where to attend. This guide can assist you with your college search by providing a reference for of some of the scholarships offered by private colleges and SUNY schools. A scholarship is a form of gift assistance that does not require repayment. It usually denotes a merit-based award which recognizes academic achievement and promise or another special attribute. Merit and special scholarships may not require an application for financial aid. However, we strongly encourage all students who believe that they may require some amount of financial aid, in addition to their merit award, to complete the forms required for need-based aid. This requires submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and may also include completing financial information for the college to which you are applying. Some colleges may consider you for need-based financial aid beyond the amount of the merit award. Always check with the school to learn about their policy for awarding scholarships. In many cases, completing an application for admission is all that is required for consideration. However, it is important to check with each college s financial aid office about scholarship application procedures, deadlines and renewal policies. Students should always familiarize themselves with the specific terms of the scholarship. In many cases, the amount of the award can change depending on the availability of funds. We recommend copying and organizing all of the forms you submit, including your tax returns. This will allow you to easily reference this information in the future. Many of the institutions in this guide offer additional scholarships beyond what is listed here. In particular, academic departments within a college or university may offer awards to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their major. Usually a period of enrollment, such as one year, is required before students can begin applying for scholarships in their major. In addition, many schools offer scholarships that are sponsored by community organizations, businesses, and endowments. The colleges admissions and financial aid staff will be happy to answer any questions you have concerning your scholarship search. No Loans for Low Income Students: A number of schools have instituted policies to ensure that students with a low family income have the opportunity to finance college with minimal or no student loans.
