2 The City of Jyväskylä and the Housing Fair Finland Coop will organise a housing fair at Äijälänranta A total of 36 lowrise houses, a private day-care centre and a 13-storey tower block will be constructed in the area. Located some 5 km from the centre of Jyväskylä, Äijälänranta is currently a green site with woods and fields. Ultimately, the area will have 800 to 1,000 residents. Once completed, Äijälänranta will constitute a compact and diversified residential environment where the human scale of family life is combined with innovative building design and a green way of thinking with the opportunities offered by an urban lifestyle. The architecture will be unexpected and unconventional, creating a basis for a wide range of optional approaches to housing. Rantaraitti, Lake Jyväsjärvi shore route, bisects the entire area giving easy access to outdoor exercise and recreation sites. A nature reserve with a rich birdlife is also found in the immediate vicinity. Äijälänranta is to be a well-designed, functional, energy- and cost-efficient residential area where the building projects will be planned and executed based on a sound development concept and a creative technical or functional idea.

3 garden & wood aalto - innovative architecture Äijälänranta has been inhabited and cultivated for almost five hundred years, and now its rich history of agriculture and gardening will be given a new lease of life. As a result of the fair project, a modern residential area will be created in the vicinity of the city centre enabling the residents to enjoy the best parts of compact urban housing while living close to nature. Special attention in construction will be paid to the use of timber materials, the introduction of the green efficiency concept to Finland, lighting and ecology. The fair will create a splendid framework for a relaxed urban lifestyle enhanced by the nearby Lake Jyväsjärvi and waterfront drive as well as gardens and allotments. Alvar Aalto was masterful in his ability to combine classical themes with modern construction. In 1926, he wrote as follows: A garden is as much a part of a home as any other room. The threshold from the herb garden to the rooms should be lower than the threshold from the street or road to the garden. In fact, we could say that a Finnish home should have two faces. One is the aesthetically immediate connection with the outdoors while the other the winter face is reflected in the interiors underlining the warmth of the rooms. Aalto s spirit is carried on by Äijälänranta where diversified present-day housing is united with bold, innovative architecture.

6 Low-rise houses offer solutions for a wide range of life situations from families with children enjoying home life to active singles and couples of more advanced age. The core of the Jyväskylä Housing Fair will consist of 36 lowrise houses to be built on the verdant shores of Lake Jyväsjärvi. The fair site will constitute a multi-faceted urban residential district with traditional low-rise houses interspersed with architecturally impressive unique homes. The area will offer suitable housing solutions for a wide range of life situations from families with children enjoying home life to active singles and couples of more advanced age. The Äijänsalmi straits glimmering in the distance between the low-rise district and the green area left in its natural state on the shore provide waterway access to Lake Päijänne with its magnificent vistas. In addition to low-rise housing, the fair will provide a uniquely urban living environment in the form of the tower block that will enhance the entire cityscape. The flats in the sky-reaching 13-storey tower block Jyväskylän Maailmanpylväs to be erected by Lake Jyväsjärvi will offer a view of the lake towards the city centre teeming with life.

7 Yards will be an integral part of the homes at the Jyväskylä Housing Fair. Special attention will be paid to green construction in the form of versatile yards, gardens and green roofs. A new green efficiency tool (green factor) measuring the efficiency of green construction will be introduced at the fair in order to increase the amount and diversity of vegetation on the plots. Äijälänranta offers an easy way of enjoying daily life. In addition, a daycare centre, a play park designed in consultation with children, a beach as well as the park furniture and artwork specifically planned for the area reflect the high standard of living. Walks along the footpaths criss-crossing the untouched waterfront offer the opportunity to appreciate the rich environs and wealth of birdlife. Rantaraitti permitting smooth commuting and easy access to recreation sites provides a ringside seat from which to admire the City of Light a sight that has won international recognition.
